So after people moaning and groaning enough about MD not being able to store data, although there is nothing stopping it from being able to do so, Sony finally gives users the ability to do so with the 1GB HI-MD drives.

U get 1GB of removeable storage but..there's a catch....It seems the device doesnt appear as USB Storage...meaning Sonic Stage...

Huh? I always thought you could copy files to the Hi-MD in explorer. In fact, I'm sure of it...

For regular MD Sony used Music MD and Data MD and they weren't compatible. For Hi-MD I dont remember Sony ever mentioning that data was allowed to be stored on Hi-MD. I didn't bother to upgrade to Hi-MD because of my iPod however if Sony had made a big deal out of being able to put data on Hi-MD I would have considered buying it.

Do you or anyone else here have a Hi-MD player and are you able to verify that you can use a regular music player via a USB connection to copy data files other than music to the unit using file explorer by itself with no SonicStage...

Something about that doesn't sound right to me...

IIRC, you can drag and drop files on a Hi-MD. i'm pretty sure you can put music on the disc as well, but you can drag music to the disc and expect it to play, even with recognized files. They have to be imported via SonicStage and wrapped in an OMF/OMG file wrapper. Good luck getting your MP3s to be recognized by SonicStage.

Edit: And yes, Sony blows. They release the PSP, which is probably the most open piece of hardware they've released since the Walkman, yet they're still behind other players in almost every way except battery life. i was ready to pick up a Hi-MD or Network Walkman until i realized that most of the changes in SonicStage were cosmetic, meaning it's still unstable, is picky about what MP3s it'll accept, and is slow in both the UI and transferring.
