1up.com interview with The Man (Kazumo Kaneko)

Cool ... I wonder if there's any chance of the PSP port of Devil Summoner making it over here. Megaten isn't a complete sales disaster anymore, but it might be too retro to pass muster (either with Atlus or, more likely, with Sony :P).

1UP: Western, offline role-playing games often have these elements of freedom, like Fable and the Bioware games.

KK: Right. Giving players various paths to choose is something I find interesting. I understand the problem with the traditional RPG in that, even though Final Fantasy X might have great CG movies featuring a dashing lead character, what if the player doesn't care whether Tidus wins or loses?

:lol

It was here that the interview was paused temporarily as the American interviewer spent the better part of the next two minutes laughing till tears shed, while Kaneko-san sat awkwardly, fearful of having broke a social taboo.

At this point in time can SCEA really afford to be selective about the games being released on their handheld? I hope this Devil Summoner port gets released here since its a game that has never seen the light of day outside of Japan, as far as I know anyways. Didn't Sega of America block this games release, along with half of the other great Saturn exclusives, back in the day?

And maybe the Megaten series is starting to have some small level of success here in North America, Atlus is actually re-releasing Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, so there's got to be some demand for it.

Well, I hope so too! I think there's at least a chance. I haven't been paying attention: Is it basically a straight port or are there some upgrades? If the graphics have been tuned up, I'm sure that'll help its chances, since it won't be perceived as reflecting poorly on the PSP :P.

I honestly don't remember re: the Saturn release.

It's a straight port. I'm hoping it didn't replace Persona PSP. Not that there's anything wrong with Devil Summoner, I just really like Persona. :P

OK, thanks. Between Devil Summoner and Persona, I'd personally take the former, since D.Summoner has never been released here...

Nope, Atlus backed out of Saturn publishing after announcing Devil Summoner, Steamgear Mash and Lunacy. SOA eventually picked up Lunacy themselves.

SCEA did block Atlus' PS1 port of Soul Hackers though (the sequel to Devil Summoner).

Didn't we get some MegaTen on the Saturn? Devil Summoner 2 maybe? I might have some crazy in my head though.
