Dead or Alive: Code Cronus
1UP: Dead or Alive: Code Cronus. Can you please explain what the hell this game is?

TI: I officially sent Microsoft details about what's known as Code Cronus. Microsoft knows about it. [Laughs] It's a story about Kasumi and Ayane and how they grow up to be these great female ninjas.

1UP: Do you envision this as an action game?

TI: Action-something. It won't be an action-quiz game, but I love action.

Project Progressive
1UP: The final Team NINJA project in the works is something called "Project Progressive." Can you tell us anything about it yet?

TI: It's an action game.

1UP: Why did you decide to work on a new action series when you've already got the Ninja Gaiden series to work with?

TI: So even in the realm of action games, you have other types of action games than what we're doing with Ninja Gaiden. You might have a shooting-based action game, or other action games with different viewpoints or worlds they take place in. So we wanted to use the knowhow we gained in making the Ninja Gaiden series, and apply that to something that has a completely different worldview. The reason I gave the name "Project Progressive" to this project is because the staff that is working on it is young and full of energy.

1UP: So it's not the Dead or Alive or Ninja Gaiden team working on it?

TI: It's the Third Fleet.

Ninja Gaiden 2
1UP: OK, let's talk about Ninja Gaiden 2. How do you follow the most hardcore action game of all time?

TI: That's not that difficult to do. First of all, there was tons of content I had cut from Ninja Gaiden as we were tuning and developing it. To liken it to a baseball game, how Ninja Gaiden got started is I threw the first pitch. And then other members of the staff carried that through to the sixth inning, and I jumped in after that and took it to the end and sewed up the game. But in the process about half of the total amount of content was cut out, of everything that was produced in that time. So if there were a hundred pieces of content to start with, I cut out about 50, and added about 50 new things, and that's how the game got finished. So there are ideas that had to get cut out just because of the situation the development was in at the time.

1UP: Since the DOA series has multiple ninjas, it's been suggested that Ninja Gaiden 2 might have a different lead character than Ryu Hayabusa. Would you care to confirm or dispel those rumors?

TI: We're right in the middle of writing the plot and the scenarios of Ninja Gaiden 2 and deciding what we want to do. Obviously Ryu Hayabusa will be the main character.

1UP: I know you've got separate teams for DOA and Ninja Gaiden. So is development full speed ahead on NG2 already?

TI: The bulk of our forces is obviously being directed to Dead or Alive 4 right now. I think this is the best result for Team NINJA fans.

I know that was more abstract, but I'll give you a specific example so your readers can understand. So here's an example. Are you aware of the fact that you can run across the water in Ninja Gaiden?

1UP: Actually I was not aware of that. It never occurred to me to try that.

There's a chest on chapter2 that's only accessible by running on water. To review NGB you need to finish the game at least 3 times ... something tells me the reviewer used the saves given by Tecmo, not his ninja skills.

lo-fucking-l.

paging milkman. milkman to the thread please.

i mean... if you're hardcore enough to play NGB on very hard and you see a chest on the other side of the river ... you try to get to it, i know it took me 30 minutes to figure out the first time.

Oh, the future is bright.
3 Action games by the same creators of Ninja Gaiden, i couldn't ask for more.

So, there's three Team Ninja teams now working on X360...nice!

Why people hate on Itagaki is beyond me...he's always fucking entertaining in interviews. This is also the best feature that 1up has ever done! I hope that, along with the recent addition of video roundtables, 1up continues to kick some ass with more week-long features, like they've done in the past with Soul Cal 3.

Itagaki is totally fucking batshit insane! I would never work for him. But it is awesome to hear how he teaches his staff to drink!!!

TECMO doesn't send out games with saves, it's always the game alone.

Mo matter what . MS have to got all of these great titles as exclusive for the xbox360 and nothing else. Yes even MS has to pay Team Ninja a shitfull of money.

Screw the PS3.

That sucks about Rachel not being in Ninja Gaiden 2. :(

Hopefully she'll make it into the other games.

How could they not put her in DOAX2? :D

Gamespot screenshots all have the health bar maxed out, even at the beginning of the game. Sorry but i doubt Kasavin is good enough to finish Ninja Gaiden.

HE says something about fighting on water in NG2!! :0

Dont know what MS done to gain such loyalty, 5 brand new games from Itagaki. That could probably take a whole generation.

Maybe he's treated as a rockstar and MS japan's main man. Whatever MS done to make him happy, keep on doing it!

And one thing i love about these interviews is that it sounds like 2 friends are having a chat. Funny and interesting getting to know itagaki through these select questions

1UP: So it's a whole new extension of Team NINJA?

TI: And so basically we're giving them for free the knowledge and technology that was accumulated through working on Ninja Gaiden. I'm teaching them everything from how to do their jobs, how to think, how to analyze a situation, all the way down to how to drink.

:lol :lol :lol

Estimates:
DOA4 - Nov '05
DOAX2 - March '06
Ninja Gaiden 2 - February '07
Project Progressive (Action Shooter) - December '07
DOA5 - October '08
Code Chronus (Action RPG) - June '09

I think Itagaki wants to pump out 6-7 games on Xbox 360, at least, considering his 3 development teams and his ambition :)

Wait, so Code Cronus actually IS going to be like a Dead or Alive Kids? :/

1UP: So it's not going to be like Dead or Alive Kids, where they're five years-old, is it?

TI: No, it's actually is close to what you just said. [Laughs]

Itagaki said in a previous interview that it won't be a game for kids. They may start out as young and learn new moves/abilities as they strengthen and grow up to become Ninjas (hence the action/rpg elements).

Oh shit!!!! Reading about NG2 just gives me fuckin goosebumps. Man I cant wait to see and hear more on Progressive and ESPECIALLY NG2.

Most excellent stuff.

1UP: Dead or Alive Ultimate used the DOAXBV graphics-engine. Will DOAX2 use the DOA4 engine this time around?

TI: The engine's going to be refined so that it's better at showing the body, the skin on the body. And yes, it will use the DOA4 engine, of course. But when it comes time for us to work on DOAX2, obviously we'll be more familiar with the Xbox 360 hardware, so it'll be better looking.

fap!

I was thinking the same thing. Oh damn I get a headache just thinking about how awesome this game could be (and with next-gen graphics). Mustn't get my hopes up....anyhitng could happen, but Team Ninja has a pretty good track record.

I would like to see Hayate/Ein make a cameo, heck maybe even put him in in a mission mode or something, or an unlockable side story. That would be pretty cool.

I wonder whatever happened to the DS game they were working on. Didnt know about the running on water in Ninja Gaiden either.. pretty sweet.

Excellent stuff. Keep it up guys.

BTW, I have to admit it did surprise me you didn't know about the 'running on water' ability. Also, this image made me chuckle and convulse in pain: http://www.1up.com/media?id=2312984&type=lg

Funny thing is a lot of people didn't know about running on water (even though it's stated clearly in the manual). :lol Like Itagaki said, there was only on eplace where you had to use it, and it was to get a bonus item. That's why many didn't even use the ability. You get pulled into the action of this game and tend to forget about the little things. That's how I've played through the original 4 times and still haven't gotten all 50 Golden Scarabs. :( I'll complete a section and be like....oh snap, I forgot to go back andget that Scarab!! :lol

I hate Itagaki's games with a burning passion (except NG), but his interviews are always a blast to read. :lol

Great stuff here.

The fact that he's so commmited to his games... is actually refreshing to read.

Unlike EA who just rehashes year in and year out.

-Que the EA Dev's making a game picture- :lol

Sorry to crush your conspiracy theories and rush to the defense of our friendly competitors, but almost everyone gets screenshots sent to them from the publishers these days. The act of taking our own inferoir screenshots is going the way of the dodo with every passing hour. Although the Xbox debug allows us to take hi-res shots via a computer, it's usually 1) easier to have the publisher supply them, or we're sometimes 2) forbidden to take our own from a non-retail build. So full health bars hardly signal the use of a cheat or a code. And to what the other guy said, it's true, Tecmo never sends out game saves with their games. Capcom does (*coughdevilmaycry3cough*), but Tecmo doesn't.

oh i can tell the difference between a PR shoot and something coming out of the Xbox framebuffer:

928401_20050805_screen004.jpg

Chapter5, health bar maxed out, 3 ninpo slots.

928401_20050518_screen002.jpg

PR screen, Tecmo never showed the Karma counter in an official shoot.

Those little jagged lines coming off of Ryu: NEVER seen that on my TV.

What are you talking about? That's an accurate shot...

It was taken during an effect that lasts for a very short period of time. I mean, how often do you actually get to see one of those distortion effects (from the sword) in a still shot?

Speevy said:
I never said it wasn't accurate. I'm just saying it's not a fair representation of what the game looks like.

Hohoho. I'm sure if you ran Ninja Gaiden through something like the DC's VGA box it'd look exactly like that.

Interesting read. The running on water commentary is deadly accurate, Ayane sends you a training tip about performing it in Chapter 2 right next to the 'hidden chest' but the rest of the game isn't built with that ability in mind. I'd rather they ditch swimming entirely in NG2 and just focus on some feathery water-walking acrobatics. Swimming sucks.

The DOAX2 news is dissapointing, who needs that crap. Good move leaving Rachel behind though, horrible character.

Oh yes it is.

That's exactly how the game looks when piped through a VGA monitor in 480p.

What is your problem with the shot, exactly? Which part of the shot do you feel fails to represent the game accurately?

That is what the XBOX is producing. If you are seeing something else, your display device is responsible for it. I never enjoyed using my Dreamcast on a VGA monitor for just that reason. It was TOO sharp and revealed too many details. It was, however, a much more accurate image...

Once again, we misunderstand one another.

I think that shot fails to represent Ninja Gaiden. For one, Ryu's character model looks much worse. You said that's a brief effect. Fine. So why was it used to represent a whole game. Also, the colors are a little duller than I remember them.

It's all about context. Would you use that screenshot as the best representation of Ninja Gaiden? And don't ask me to find one, because I really don't care. All I know is that to a person who doesn't know a thing about Ninja Gaiden, that screenshot paints a picture of the game that I don't recall.

That screenshot looks ripped right from the game in my eyes. I spent a LOT of time in that room in Hard mode fighting off both Dark Ryu, and attempting the 60 fiend cat/bee challenge. dark10x assessment is apt, that is the way it looks.

As I said, the difference in colors is the result of YOUR output device. The XBOX is not rendering the "pretty colors" that you are referring to. That is entirely related to your television.

Ryu's model does NOT look worse and that effect is a GOOD thing. I can see now why it might be a problem as folks, such as yourself, are unable to recognize how the effect works.

It may not be a good shot to demonstrate what NG is all about, but it is the most accurate type of shot you will find.

Here's SSX for the PS2. Same game you played anyone?
You've clearly missed the point.

The XBOX shot is taken directly from the framebuffer. That is what the XBOX is rendering and anything else you see is simply modified by the cables and TV set in use.

That SSX shot is captured from an s-video cable. That is not a framebuffer grab and not accurate to what the game is rendering.
