Hmm, Tokyo and Yokohama? Having spent much of the last year there going back in forth to both I can't say I agree. Sure, it's very safe, but these people work so damn much and people jumping in front of trains to kill themselves is a regular occurance. Add to that - small living spaces and people cramming into the subway cars like sardines and it's not a place I want to live...

Lol Brussels really? That place went to shit a long time ago. Unless you talk about that little nice area that is extremely expensive.

The fact that DC is higher than Pittsburgh makes my head spin.

I mean, you guys have the Redskins.

43 for DC seems right. DC to me has some of the BEST living standards in the world, depending on where you are. Other areas are horrible. When you combine the two we come in at just "above average." Personally there are very few places on earth that would be equally desirable as DC as a place to live. London, San Fran, Seattle, and Chicago come to mind. I can't really think of anywhere else I would willingly live. A lot of that has to do with only speaking English though...

Düsseldorf is a hole (I'm German so I am allowed to say it). Most of the other German cities have stuff going for them but I would not even remotely consider them having a particularly high standard of living. Are they high when they put these lists together?

So most of the North American Cities listed are in colder climates (Barring Honolulu of course).

What is it about being cold that makes living awesome?

Um, I grew up in DC and it is a shithole. No way should it be top 50, let alone top 200. It's blowing my mind that it's on the list.

I think they can ignore the crappiness of our sports franchises.

However, it's also questionable how they can ignore that we have to share a living space with all those inept individuals on Capitol Hill.

When's the last time you've visited? While it certainly depends on which side of the Anacostia you're on, a lot of neighborhoods are being transformed into hipster/young-professional paradises.

Plus, I think they include NoVa (or at least the income those people bring into the 10x10) into the figure.

Lived there till I was 15, then moved to NoVa, now I'm in Maryland, but I still go to the city quite often. There just doesn't seem to be much culture to me, it's such a hogwash of different things going on. I agree with your hipster / yuppie comment, but I wouldn't call them 'paradises.' A lot of my yuppie friends live in those areas so I usually stay the night on the weekends. They really aren't that much different than other areas, it needs time.

I'm in California at the moment and it's a million times better IMO

to each his own though.

At the other end of the personal-safety scale, Caracas, Venezuela (205), Port-au-Prince, Haiti (202), Bogotá, Colombia (196), and Kingston, Jamaica (192), rank lowest in the region.

Jesus fucking Christ, how on earth are we worst than Haiti!? And Bogota is too low, most beautiful city in South America by far, IMO. FARC shit is almost controled there.

You prefer NoVA to DC? Really? I doubt we'd agree on ANY place to live then. You're right that DC doesn't really have its own culture. It's by far the biggest drawback. I think it's interesting to watch though. The most annoying thing is people who come here and spend years talking about how much worse it is than place X (usually some shithole rural area or NYC). Why those people don't just fucking move is beyond me. If it's because of work than accept the fact that there actually IS something you like about DC, it's the only place where you're employable.

So I don't know a whole lot about living in Europe, but I was under the impression that Sweden was an amazing place to live, yet it's only there a couple times. What's the deal?

I would say out of the three I prefer Maryland the most only because of College Park, where I went to college. NoVa's alright, I went to high school there so it's special to me / I made a lot of good friends there, I don't really go there much now that I'm 22.

Yeah I agree that the majority of people come here because of work, you don't see to many people choose to come here for the city / nightlife / culture. But yeah, people complain like mad about DC and it irks me. Honestly I did it to for a while, but eventually got so tired with the lack of culture / all the politics that I decided on moving. I'm in Santa Monica now looking for places, I'm moving in January.

Do you live in DC? Nice username btw.

So disposable income is not considered in one's quality of living?... To each their own I suppose.

The lack of Nordic cities confuses me somewhat.

There are not too many large-ish cities in Scandinavia/Nordic countries- there are about the same amount of people in metro NYC as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland combined. From looking at the list, I'd assume a city needs to be the hub of a metro area of around 1 million to make the list.

Honolulu? Isn't that supposed to be a high crime shit hole? I don't think I've ever heard anything good about Honolulu.
