2013 Voting Rules

1. List a minimum of 10 albums and a maximum of 25 albums. If you list more than 25, the extras will not be scored, so there's no harm in this. However if you list less than 10 your list will not be counted.
2. Voting Ends January 12th at 11:59pm, PST
3. Only albums first released in 2013 are eligible. LPs and EPs are eligible. Singles, reissues, live albums and greatest hits collections are not eligible. Compilations are eligible if they have mostly new material (such as After Dark 2 for example).
4. You may edit your list as much as you like until the deadline. If you change your list and decide to repost it, please edit your original post.
5. Use the following formatting:

01 | Artist Name | Album Name
02 | Artist Name | Album Name
03 | Artist Name | Album Name

5. Be careful to use correct spelling. If an artist/album name uses non-latin characters, please include the translated name in brackets. Also, if an artist's name includes accents or other unusual characters, please spell it out as the artist intended. If you are in doubt, check http://rateyourmusic.com/ to find the standard spelling. Example:

01 | きのこ帝国 [Kinoko Teikoku] | Eureka
02 | Gris | À l'âme enflammée, l'äme constellée...

6. If you deviate from the format or your list contains errors such as nonconsecutive numbers or duplicate entries, your list could end up being discarded.
7. Adding extra content to your list is encouraged, especially in the form of comments. If you include comments in your list, they will be used in the album roll-out thread. If you add extra content to your list, this is an ideal way in which to do so:

01 | Artist Name | Album Name

"Well written comment describing the music and/or your feelings about the music."

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I will not be able to tally this all by myself. If you are interested in helping to tally a chunk of the results, please send me a PM. Even better, if you know how to write a script to help tally results, or anything to that effect, please let me know.

That's it! Have fun with lists everyone :)

Liking a lot of the suggestions by Bread, Yoshiya, Jaroof, and Mastadon. We evidently have very similar tastes, so I hope to discover some great stuff I haven't yet heard by going over the unknown names on your lists.

Hopefully should have my own one done in a few weeks.

I don't listen to music as much as I used to and that saddens me. Was a time when I was able to round off an albums of the year list to 50 no sweat, but those days are long gone.

It's gonna be tough for me to get 10. I listen to music almost all day but it's usually the same old stuff. I don't listen to very many different artists.

I suspect that a grand total of 1 of these albums will be on other lists...

1 | Lange | We Are Lucky People
812bylqtr2bel._sl1400yzkfi.jpg

Lange has been a long time favourite artist of mine. He started producing tracks for this album last year, and released them as singles as soon as he finished each one.
The album collects together these tracks, and lots of new tracks on 2 discs. 2nd disc is the 'club' versions of each of the 13 tracks, and are the same as any of the tracks he released over the past 12 months.
Disc 1 strips tracks down, re-edits them, blends them together etc into an absolutely stunning release. Genuinely one of my favourite albums in years. Absolutely incredible stuff, start to finish. Its all trance, but full of vocals, strings, pianos and no 'EDM Bangers'.

Lange - Our Brief Time in the Sun

2 | Daft Punk | Random Access Memories
41upfpq4xnldhsig.jpg

I have a bit of an obsession with Daft Punk, and have had this obsession for years. So to say i was looking forward to this is an understatement.
I love the direction they took. Lose Yourself to Dance has been played so many times this year by me, its crazy. I love the album, but for another to beat it for my AOTY, means that Lange did an amazing job!
The bonus track from the Japanese release - Horizon - might actually be my favourite track.

Daft Punk - Horizon

3 | BT | A Song Across Wires
91o5o61t3yl._sl1390_6yshj.jpg

BT has always produced great stuff. His 2012 album 'If the Stars are Eternal So are you and I' was one of my favourites last year.
I was eagerly awaiting this one purely because of Skylarking. An absolutely beautiful track that i can listen to on repeat for hours. The album opens with Skylarking, and then the rest of it carries on with similar great stuff. Lots of vocals, some complextro/dubstep influences, and some amazing melodies.

BT - Skylarking

4 | Mat Zo | Damage Control
61swp0ktjtl._sl1200_yrsqa.jpg

A recent release, and one i actually forgot about until the week before it was due out. I was reminded when Lucid Dreams was being previewed... and wow. Easily amongst my individual tracks of 2013.
Cant really put a single genre on the album, there are loads of electronic music styles on here.

Mat Zo - Lucid Dreams

5 | The Japanese Popstars | Disconnect / Reconnect
81zurvn2-pl._sl1400_98stv.jpg

These guys have been quietly releasing things and touring for a few years now, but this album is their best by far. A lot darker, harder and more driving than most of the other stuff on my list (and than much of their back catalogue!). Proper late night stuff, but absolutely massive tunes from start to end. Released on John Digweeds Bedrock label, so that should give you a flavour of the type of music they are releasing at the minute.
They are 2 guys from Ireland, and not a group of Japanese Popstars!

The Japanese Popstars - Disconnect/Reconnect

6 | Hurts | Exile
41pq9jmxzvlrys21.jpg

Something a little less electronic has made my list! Two guys from Manchester, Hurts produce synthpoppy rock, for lack of a better description. This is their second album, and i am a massive fan of their style of music.
Their tracks always have me singing, without fail. Some beautiful tracks, and some more pop and rock based songs. A great little mix of tunes.

Hurts - Somebody to Die For

7 | Various | Lange Recordings 100
51qp5vzjizl._sl500_aa6fsao.jpg

Lange, at my number 1 spot, also runs his own record label. The labels 100th release was this year, and he celebrated it with a compilation of new tracks from various artists on the label. Lots of trance, with a bit of house and others thrown in.
Some really great tracks on this selection, and almost mirrors my current taste in trance music.

Johnny Yono - Orion

8 | Simian Mobile Disco | Tong Zi Dan EP
51sclxynlul._sl500_aaidshy.jpg

I cant get enough of SMD. Their first 2 albums were great, but their third - Unpatterns - and their subsequent releases labelled as 'Delicacies', including this EP, have all been truly fantastic.
Much more techno, analogue etc than much of the rest of my list. These are the kind of tracks i love to just drive to, or put on some good headphones and totally zone out to.
Saw them live for the first time in a few years the other week. I go to a lot of live music, and this was the best gig i have been to in years. Pure analogue joy.

Simian Mobile Disco - Tong Zi Dan

9 | Gesaffelstein | Aleph
81id0rdvysl._sl1500_3as49.jpg

I hadnt heard of Gesaffelstein, at all, until i heard Pursuit earlier this year. Woah. Not sure how i missed his releases!
Aleph is some pretty heavy techno in places. The whole album really is great if you like that sort of thing (and i do!), but Pursuit is an absurdly good track.

Gesaffelstein - Pursuit [NSFW]

10 | Solarstone/Various | Pure Trance Vol.2
815qcqskhyl._sl1500_a2s7s.jpg

Another compilation to finish my top 10. Trance has always been my no.1 musical love. At times i havent particularly enjoyed the direction many producers have gone down the past few years, though. Lange and Solarstone have kept things on track.
Solarstones 'Pure' message has been great. Productions and remixes that are as they sound - Pure Trance.
This is the second compilation of this type, collecting together brand new Pure Trance tracks. This is the kind of thing i listen to electronic music for.

Love Theme from Bladerunner - Solarstone Pure Mix

I suspect that a grand total of 1 of these albums will be on other lists...

I've seen a lot of love for Gesaffelstein on GAF, so you'll get at least 2 of those cropping up in a few people's lists. I'd imagine Hurts and SMD will make an appearance in a few lists, too.

34423 was the biggest surprise, came out of fucking nowhere and is brilliant. I liked My Bloody Valentine's new LP at first but I've become utterly apathetic regarding the whole shoegazing/noise rock thing recently so it felt out of favor. Can't even muster the enthusiasm for Sonic Youth anymore.

Compared to other years I feel like I really neglected my list this year. Going to take a bit of cleaning up and really thinking to get it straight.

Oh man, this is gonna take me awhile. It would be a lot easier if I got to create genre-specific lists. I'll probably post a proto-list soon then fuck with it multiple times before the deadline.

2013 has probably been the best year in music since maybe 2006.

Here's my top 50. Left off some obvious ones because they're gonna be on a lot of peoples lists (Boards Of Canada, Jon Hopkins, Holden, etc). Only the top 5 or are really in any real order, the rest are just "list worthy" and placed the order I could think of them.

Why does that have to be 10? That seems arbitrary to me. What if there weren't 10 great albums that came out this year?

It's because if someone only listened to a couple albums the entire year, they don't really have much perspective on the year in music, and it will give an unfair boost to the more than likely headline artist that they listened to. The video game equivalent is if everyone who only buys CoD every year were allowed to vote, then CoD would win every poll through brute force even though it's not necessarily that good. Hundreds of great albums come out every year so it should be fine.

2013 has been fucking awesome for music. Bookmarking for later!

i don't understand how people could have less than 10 albums. i mean, so much music is released every month, there's literally too much music to listen to sometimes.

2013 has been fucking awesome for music. Bookmarking for later!

It really has been. Not only have most of the things I was looking forward to lived up to the hype, but there's also been plenty of stuff I didn't know of that I've loved as well.

Yeah. I think it's a good rule, it helps prune out the people who'd vote just for the sake of voting. If you can't come up with 10 votes, you either don't listen to very much music at all, or you're just being lazy. Not to be rude, but if you're guilty of either or both of those things, your vote probably wouldn't add much to the thread anyways.

01 | Deafheaven | Sunbather

220px-Deafheaven_-_Sunbather_2013.png

2013 was the year of suprises, comebacks and shattered expectations. Sunbather was the biggest surprise of my year. In all my days I never thought that a black metal band like Deafheaven could make my album of the year. But here we are, a Black Metal album that transcends it's genre and becomes something much more. Calm. Storm. Beauty. Chaos. Noise. Ambience. All of it. All at once. So good.

02 | My Blloody Valentine | MBV

220px-My_Bloody_Valentine_-_MBV.jpg

I'm pretty certain that in the next couple of years mbv will be placed on the same pedastal as Loveless was. Quoted and dissected in indie music blogs till the end of time. But in the mean time, we can stop talking about their legacy and just enjoy this great album. 9 songs that reinforces what made the band so good, while also pushing their sound into new exciting territory. You know, like Loveless did .

03 | Burial | Rival Dealer

220px-Rival_Dealer_Burial.png

Out of nowhere, Burial comes along and completely shakes up my list. Rival Dealer is probably the boldest move Burial has ever made in his career. Changing his style with anthemic pop melodies, complex song structures and thought provoking soundbites. It pays off, massively.

04 | Dirty Beaches | Drifters/Love is the Devil

220px-Dirty_Beaches_Drifters_Love_Is_The_Devil.jpg

Drifters/Love is the Devil is a double album about the night. 'Drifters' is full of songs like Casino Lisboa and Mirage Hall evoking a neon riddled murky underground. Love is the Devil is an album about romance & heartreak, and it's hollowed out ambient wanderings and somber love songs including 'Like The Ocean We Part' are some of the most powerful stuff i've listened to this year

05 | These New Puritans | Field of Reeds

These New Purtians took one of the most unexpected and exciting left turns of the year when they released 'Field of Reeds'. Dailing the pretenious influences to 11, transforming the band from post punk to post rock, and evoking dozens of Talk Talk comparisons. But it payed off, just like it did with Mark Hollis, and they've created one of the most foward thinking albums of the year

Yeah. I think it's a good rule, it helps prune out the people who'd vote just for the sake of voting. If you can't come up with 10 votes, you either don't listen to very much music at all, or you're just being lazy.

My only issue is after the first 3 or 4, it's mostly just putting a number on something. It's always really hard for me to pick a top 5, because there always seems to be 6 or 7 I can put there, and everything after that is just stuff I've liked but don't have a serious attachment to. First two or three are always easy though.
