I thought seasons 2 and 3 were crappy. I am so happy season 4 turned out the way it did eventhough some of the parts I felt were not really needed, but oh well!
Season 4 is to me as Season 1 and 2 are to me. I love them. I've still yet to watch all of Season 3 though, but i thought it lost focus with the storyline. I'll have to see if i cant watch Season 3 soon.
I cant wait for season 5.

Definitely a great season, but Season 1 is still better.

Season 4 is when 24's writers jumped the shark. The acting is still good, the direction is still good...but the writing blew chunks. Individual episodes were really good, and some of the storylines were really cool...but they threw in about 10 different plots that could have each filled up half a season with proper pacing. They went for cheap thrills, and all it did was cheapen the impact of each and every "Plot Twist".
It has great moments of suspense, some great action, and a performance that should have finally gotten a supporting actress an Emmy nomination for the show (From Shoreh Aghdashloo(My best guess at the spelling))...and yet, as a whole, it simply didn't come together. Looking back on it, all I can do is wonder how it ever could have logically progressed in that manner. It was writers who were unwilling to write nuanced storylines, instead going for the most explosions they could fit into a season.
Season Two still has one of the least conclusive seasons, including one of worst second half sections...but Season 4 is the least cohesive and, perhaps, the worst season of them all.

Half seasons are necessary for Season 2 and Season 4 (It was going pretty good the halfway point). Season Three...I don't have so much of a deal with that. It's different, yes, but not so different that it was bad. Plus, I felt it had a very logical flow and was well-paced, unlike 2 and 4 which started off with promise and fell into near mediocrity.
Season One>Season Three>Season Two>Season Four.
That is how I'd rank them, by season...the second half of Season 2 just drags it down so damn much. How 12-13 episodes of such great storylines could devolve into obscure crap that was never fully realized is beyond me. However, the first half is better than anything in Season 3, so it's still not an easy list to make.

Shame there's no commentary by Kiefer.Only season I've seen so far was last year's, which defintely got ridiculous in places but was intresting enough for me to stick with. Up here they showed the first two episodes from Season 1 on Sun TV (God I want Mia Kirshner), and they plan to show two episodes every Sunday from the first two seasons, so it'll give me a chance to go back to the beginning and catch up a bit.

A couple guys in chat said it's largely because the first season was only written as 13 episodes initially since Fox was unsure about it, then they added the rest where I guess it really picks up. I guess the events in season 1 and 4 are also different...right from the start there's the train explosion and kidnapping in season 4, so it starts off hot from the jump.

I loved series 4. IMO it was as good as the show has ever been. Yes it was silly but you reach a point where you stop caring about technical details...it's just entertainment. It's there to keep you entertained and, IMO, 24 does it far better than any other show on TV. 24 s4 was slow to start but from episode 8 onwards, it was just non-stop!

But I'm not sure that's actually an accurate portrayal of who's buying these DVDs...

Yeah, Season 4 was a little much for me. Was it fuckin' awesome? Yeah. Did it have tons of great moments? Of course. But I just kept getting tired of Jack catching up to the terrorists and then they had something else big planned and the chase kept on. The subplots/character arcs just weren't as powerful in Season 4, and those are what underscore the main plot and make the show so good to me.
Season 4 seems to be crappy for shows: 24, Buffy, Smallville off the top of my head.
The plot in 24 for the season was so bad. Side plots were stupid and no one cared about them (crazy daughter), too much focus on annoying as hell characters (Edgar anyone?), and the overall plot was just boring. Beginning and end of the season were the only awesome parts.
Season 5 sounds great though.
