NOTE: THE BLOCKED OUT SPOILER TEXT THROUGHOUT THIS THREAD HIDES THE EVENTS OF 24 SEASON 5
Hey how appropriate...a new season of 24 has begun, and I get this demo in the mail.
Anyway, the demo opens by saying the presentation is not representative of the real-time format the actual game is in... so I don't know how that'll effect everything in the end. But uh, it really did a good job of matching the show. Time ticks on the bottom every so often, you get the trademark cut aways, every so often during gameplay you'll get a call on the cellphone with whatever mission-related banter you need. Voice acting is also right on the mark, really makes a fan of the show proud. Technically, not the highest marks. Textures are pretty low quality all around, and the framerate is really jittery. Just not very attractive, sporting a sort of watered down, muddy look.
The first mission is in some abandoned building, and the gameplay plays out in a sort of cover and shoot fashion. Use things for cover, press L1 and pop out around and shoot the dude in the head with R1. Scroll through targets with the right analog stick. Works pretty well, but the camera needs tweaking. You can manually move it, but it seems to react poorly by getting stuck behind objects and stuff. Quickly you get your first cellphone call, and that's when the total 24 fangirl in me jumps in. Michelle is all "Chapelle is pissed at you Jack", and I'm all "yeeeeeeeeee". Jack Bauer power hour goes all fuckin' shit up, and she tells me not to kill anyone! The nerve.
Anyway, just some initial impressions. Definitely a game in need of serious tweaking, but, 24 fangirl still needs to participate in the story.
UPDATE:
he other segments that they showed were to emphasize the variety of the gameplay. First, we went to an interrogation. Jack was being all bad ass. How it works is like, you got a stress chart. Looks like a heart meter thing. So the buttons triangle, circle and X are all different levels of applying stress. One raises his stress level (torture), one keeps it the same (maintain pressure), one lowers his stress. There's a blue bar on the stress chart that indicates when it's time to press a certain button, so you wanna hit it when the button is inside the blue bar. For instance, if the blue bar is over triangle you wanna raise his stress. If you miss it, he'll remain unresponsive. Apply too much pressure, he'll not answer you, too little he'll remain defiant. This was pretty neat, 'cause it was badass Jack... but transitions between dialogue was a little awkward and also it didn't amount to much more than a simplistic mini-game in the end. Still, I can see this mixing the gameplay up decently.
The next segment was data analysis, which was pretty interesting 'cause it caught me off guard and I didn't exactly read the directions so when I finally figured it out I was all racing against the clock. Basically, they said I had to analyze the presidents route and see where the potential sniping targets were. I would roll the scanning clicker over buildings and then zoom into the schematics. Then I would scan heat signals and see if it's a potential target. I had to get seven before time ran out, but I got five before time ran out. If I would have noticed how to scroll through floors earlier, it would have been super easy.
Also, Michelle looks like a total chubster. It's pretty funny.
Finally, there was a car chase scene. This was really weak. It was just going through a bunch of really empty gutter roads, and although I was being chased and hit by cars I never felt a sense of danger or urgency and the controls were real slippery to boot. Not to mention, again, framerate. This is the worst problem with the game. It is all over the place, seriously needs to be locked in. Eventually Michelle sent in a helicopter and it shot out some roadblocks and shit, but, again... nothing worth speaking about. Bland.
