24: The Game Demo Impressions

NOTE: THE BLOCKED OUT SPOILER TEXT THROUGHOUT THIS THREAD HIDES THE EVENTS OF 24 SEASON 5

Hey how appropriate...a new season of 24 has begun, and I get this demo in the mail.

Anyway, the demo opens by saying the presentation is not representative of the real-time format the actual game is in... so I don't know how that'll effect everything in the end. But uh, it really did a good job of matching the show. Time ticks on the bottom every so often, you get the trademark cut aways, every so often during gameplay you'll get a call on the cellphone with whatever mission-related banter you need. Voice acting is also right on the mark, really makes a fan of the show proud. Technically, not the highest marks. Textures are pretty low quality all around, and the framerate is really jittery. Just not very attractive, sporting a sort of watered down, muddy look.

The first mission is in some abandoned building, and the gameplay plays out in a sort of cover and shoot fashion. Use things for cover, press L1 and pop out around and shoot the dude in the head with R1. Scroll through targets with the right analog stick. Works pretty well, but the camera needs tweaking. You can manually move it, but it seems to react poorly by getting stuck behind objects and stuff. Quickly you get your first cellphone call, and that's when the total 24 fangirl in me jumps in. Michelle is all "Chapelle is pissed at you Jack", and I'm all "yeeeeeeeeee". Jack Bauer power hour goes all fuckin' shit up, and she tells me not to kill anyone! The nerve.

Anyway, just some initial impressions. Definitely a game in need of serious tweaking, but, 24 fangirl still needs to participate in the story.

UPDATE:

he other segments that they showed were to emphasize the variety of the gameplay. First, we went to an interrogation. Jack was being all bad ass. How it works is like, you got a stress chart. Looks like a heart meter thing. So the buttons triangle, circle and X are all different levels of applying stress. One raises his stress level (torture), one keeps it the same (maintain pressure), one lowers his stress. There's a blue bar on the stress chart that indicates when it's time to press a certain button, so you wanna hit it when the button is inside the blue bar. For instance, if the blue bar is over triangle you wanna raise his stress. If you miss it, he'll remain unresponsive. Apply too much pressure, he'll not answer you, too little he'll remain defiant. This was pretty neat, 'cause it was badass Jack... but transitions between dialogue was a little awkward and also it didn't amount to much more than a simplistic mini-game in the end. Still, I can see this mixing the gameplay up decently.

The next segment was data analysis, which was pretty interesting 'cause it caught me off guard and I didn't exactly read the directions so when I finally figured it out I was all racing against the clock. Basically, they said I had to analyze the presidents route and see where the potential sniping targets were. I would roll the scanning clicker over buildings and then zoom into the schematics. Then I would scan heat signals and see if it's a potential target. I had to get seven before time ran out, but I got five before time ran out. If I would have noticed how to scroll through floors earlier, it would have been super easy.

Also, Michelle looks like a total chubster. It's pretty funny.

Finally, there was a car chase scene. This was really weak. It was just going through a bunch of really empty gutter roads, and although I was being chased and hit by cars I never felt a sense of danger or urgency and the controls were real slippery to boot. Not to mention, again, framerate. This is the worst problem with the game. It is all over the place, seriously needs to be locked in. Eventually Michelle sent in a helicopter and it shot out some roadblocks and shit, but, again... nothing worth speaking about. Bland.

Well at least they are going about it right. The game may suck, but they are having the full cast do voices and such for the game which at least gives it some merit to fans of the series.

Although I do demand more demo impressions there Amir0x! Or is it just that one mission?

The demo screen says multiple missions, and I was just doing this one. I'll update the further I go.

Did you have to sign up to get the demo Amir0x? Or you did you get it for preview purposes?

It's on the latest OPM demo disc. Also, the latest OPM demo disc has the MGS4 video trailer... but that has been beat like a dead horse :P

cheers. Im getting this regardless of the quality.

Jacks the man.

What happened to your "NO MORE CURRENT GEN GAMES POLICY!"

First Zelda, now 24. 360 ftw indeed. ;)

Prine is not ready for next gen!

Being a newer 24 fanboy (I first started watching with season 4), I hope this game turns out good!

Ok, updated impressions. Just finished the demo.

Anyway, that's all.

Yeah, I'm totally picking this up no matter how good it actually it is. And that has nothing to do with "supporting shitty licensed games" as much as it has to do with top-notch voice acting, a script written by the series writers that has canoned information about the characters that won't be revealed during the TV show,
and another chance to chill with Palmer and Michelle without having to grieve them.

When i saw Michelle for the first time I laughed, 'cause they didn't really do a great job of getting her look down. She looks really chubby or something, like her face is too fat.

Anyway, this is basically it. if you're a 24 fan, you'll dig it just to take in the fairly good presentation and authentic 24 writing/voice and shit. Otherwise, definitely seems like one to dodge so far.

Yeah, I don't get that, either. She looks terrible. The modeling for everyone else is just okay, but they're respectable. Michelle is just...ugh, maybe she was having an off-month when she went into do the motion capturing, or something, but I'm guessing it's just poor modeling.

Here's to hoping they did a more respectable job on Palmer. :\

Yeah the game was a total cockblock, everytime something would happen they'd only let like one line of dialogue and they'd automatically shuffle to the next portion of the demo. Palmer better be awesome,
for memorial.

Uh...were Fowler and I the only people on the planet who played this exact same demo at E3? I told you all about it back then and nobody gave a shit.

*goes off to sulk*

Hey, I gave a shit! I think... that was a long time ago!

Thanks for the impressions, I think I'll end up renting this one, despite being the total 24 fangirl.

It would have been funny if the game let you play it for an hour, then won't let you play it again until a week later. ;)

New OPM disc has this demo, and a 60FPS MGS4 trailer in a very good quality. Didn't have a chance to play the demo yet, but I can at least vouch for the quality of the MGS4 trailer video file.

Amen to this!
RIP Palmer/Michelle D:

Sounds like a bargain bin purchase from your impressions, Ami.

Unless, this is simply the E3 demo and the final has been improved somewhat. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to settle for Black on 2/28.

I can't say for sure where the quality is going, but like Gazunta said, this demo is the exact same demo as that shown off at E3. Not just the same levels, it's undoubtedly the same demo code. It doesn't show off any of the eight months of work since then, wherever that effort may have been spent (Cambridge was very proud about the game at the show, which had me worried.) I liked the early demo at E3 for what it did even though it was obviously rough, so hopefully they've spent some time since then getting the camera straight and making the mini-challenges good.

Rental FTW.

I was so psyched about this game when it was first announced.

I'll still hold out hope that something will make it good.

I didn't know Michelle was dead until reading this thread. :(

Serves me right for not keeping up with the show, I guess. Hotties like her just shouldn't die.

I just fnished the demo, and it's not half as bad as I was expecting considering how much I dislike SCE Cambridge games so far.

Most importantly, it translates the atmosphere of the show pretty well, which saves it from it's many rough edges. I would agree with Ami's impressions almost wholeheartedly, except that I didn't have much of a problem with graphics, except that some textures do look poor, and Michelle's character model does not look as she should look (just as he said, her face looks too chubby and has somewhat robotic expression). On the other hand, Jack's model is spot on, I couldn't be happier with it (on this gen hardware, that it). There are also some nice lighting effects, such as HDR effect when you go from inside the building to the sunny outside, water reflections during the race part and some others. I liked the slight camera shake/tilt when you're running, it makes it look closer to what they do on the show. There's also good use of split screen technique that show is known for - there's a scene where you see yourself being cought on some security camera, and there you have a few options: Shoot the camera / try being quick stealthy / just run in guns blazing. The demo was also really easy, but maybe they just tweaked it that way for the E3?

I think this is the kind of game where the atmosphere and story will make a huge part of one's potential enjoyment in it, and as such this demo can't possibly provide the feeling the final will.

This sounds like butt.

too bad, great show.
Rent it for sure if you like the show. This may not be some gaming gem, As far as licensed propertise go, it definitely doesn't seem to be the kind of disaster Enter the Matrix was.

Since this seems to be generally accepted to be the E3 demo, there's a LOT of time between then and now for them to fix the problems noted in my post. I hope they do, but, I'm still thinking it's gonna be solid for fans.

Kinda OT but maybe those s5 spoilers should be marked? I wasn't spoiled but I know some people here who are waiting for the box set before watching...

You cocksuckers spoiled the show! I'm currently knee deep in season 3 and had no idea about the deaths of two serious players on the team. :( :(

Ugh, I'm really sorry. I was literally fixing it as you typed that. What terrible timing. :\

More on topic, if the demo is actually the E3 code, that rocks. Sure sounds like it, at least. Game should at least be more polished, at least. I still expect Michelle to look like a tard.

Eh, don't sweat it. I was spoiled the end of S1 long before I watched it and still got caught up in the inevitable conclusion. 24 is great popcorn TV and I'm probably too late to the party for sympathy anyway.

Got an 8 in Edge, so it must have come around with final code (then again, they're hard graders but like Brit games a lot.)

WTF!!!!!!!!!! THATS PART OF SERIES 5??!!! OYU SYUPID TARTS!

Anyone mind checking something for me? INsert the OPM demo disc in a PC and check the 24 directory and see if there's an ELF file. For some reason, I dont have one and I think that's why it isn't running for me. I want to try thsi demo dammit :(

I don't think people gotta spoilmark stuff for those waiting 12 months to watch it. :P Just watch it on TV.

Yep.

This is gonna be another case of "omfg this could make an awesome game but it sucks" like The Matrix did. :\

They scored Getaway and Primal really low (Primal got 4, Getaway got 6, and Getaway2 got 3), so that's at least telling something. The demo, as early and old as it is, already seemed better than the final versions of those games.
