2GB Memory Stick: More Memory for Less

and that's MSRP. :D It seems like in a matter of 9 months or so, that Memory stick is quickly approaching the average cost of SD & Compact Flash (eg The $60 1GB stick deal). I guess it shows what putting multiple millions of hardware out there can do for a format.

Yup, and you can already preorder the SanDisk 2GB for $150, which is pretty damn good. Kind of crazy that people were paying way more than that for half the size just a few months ago.

I'm fine with my 1GB though. I might upgrade when prices for the 2GB dip below $100.

Do you have a 2GIG?
I don't understand it if it possible to buy it or not NOW. :)

I bought a Sandisk 1GB stick for $105 several months ago.

Currently, the stick contains The Matrix Reloaded, a buttload of photos and wallpapers, and MP3s of some of my favorite songs by Collide and Josh Todd.

I may also have an episode of The Office on there, but not sure because space was getting tight.

Howard Stringer is a man of his word!
I hope all the stuff he said he's gonna do comes true... If so expect further SONY home console dominance and SONY to attain at least 25% of the global handheld market....

PSP - meeting all your games and multimedia on the go needs
PS3 - meeting all your console and home media center needs.

I'm guessing that 2 gigger Sandisk hits the end of September? Very nice.

150 in stores only nets you a 1 gig stick. Now I know why I've held onto my 32MB stick for this long, 2 gig soon!

Ok....so a 64MB flast X360 memory card costs $40..

PS3 will use Memory Stick Duos for game saves..

How large of a Duo will $40 buy you these days? :)

At places like Best Buy and Circuit City around 128 MB. Just $10 more gets you 256 MB.

Will PS3 use Duos or can it use just regular memory sticks?

Also, it'd be more accurate to compare prices once the PS3 comes out, but obviously we can do that yet :)

I believe PSPs and PS3s will be able to share game save data...so, Duo for both :)

you know by time the PS3 comes out 2 Gig for a Duo can easily be under $100. Sorry MS you lose in the memory card department. :lol 512 MB sticks will probably be sold for $40 by then.

Well, this past week $60 bought you a gig. :D

Here's a 512MB for $40

http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?refer=froogle&id=1004006

and there are a ton for $45

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q...B&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=p&sa=N&start=40

By the time the PS3 comes out, I'd say you could get a 1GB for $40 easily and probably a bit less if you try at all.

Even if the PS3 only had a slot for regular memory sticks, there are adapters that allow Duo size memory sticks to work in those slots.

i know, but regular memory sticks are cheaper than Duos for the same size storage.

actually not really, look at prices for a standard MS Pro on Froogle. About the same price.

yeah, my surprise. I thought the bigger ones were cheaper, but that may have been awhile ago when the duos first came out.

Guess i'll just wait to upgrade my 512 stick till i can pick up a 2gb stick for ~$100. May be awhile but i've already waited 6 mos so whatever lol. Besides 2gb really seems like the sweet spot size wise for me anyways, i'm going barebones and only using about 150mb on my 512 but ideally i'd keep about a gig of stuff if possible, with a 2 gb i'd have tons of room to spare. Sony, make it happen.

You should also be laughing at SCE for all the lost revenue since they made a killing on memory cards for the PS/PS2 and they won't next gen.

It depends how much is the manufacturing cost of their hardware... did Nintendo make more profit for each GCN sold at $199 or for each GBA sold at around $90 (launch GBA) ?

;).

You can get one for that much (or very close) now. :) By the time PS3 is out, 1gigs should be close to memory card range. At least in Sony's case, absense of an HDD wouldn't be terribly disasterous.

I've said it before, but if 1gb sticks are memory card price range by PS3 launch, Sony should just make the minimum size of stick that the PS3 accepts be 1gb, if that is possible, so then all devs can at least create their games ensured that every user will have enough space for custom soundtracks or downloadable content or whatever.

I think the writing is on the wall as far as the viability of premium-priced, console-proprietary memory cards goes. With widespread availability of several successful flash media formats that are also compatible with a range of devices on the market and with prices that are dropping through the floor, I don't see how consoles would not be impacted if they tried to run another 5 yr cycle with the more antiquated approach.
