Firefighters remained on the scene this morning after a fire ripped through a historic building in one of Manhattan's busiest shopping areas.
The building is located in SoHo at the intersection of Broadway and Prince streets.
Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson has the latest.
Crews were still on the scene Sunday morning and among other things, there were removing some of the broken glass from windows that were all shattered when they had to get inside the building.
They were also monitoring hot spots. This building has been renovated so many times that they were actually still finding pockets of flames.
This fire started at about 10:00 p.m. Saturday night and quickly jumped to five alarms. Officials believe it began somewhere between the first floor and the ceiling of the basement. Thick black smoke poured out of the windows as crews not only used ladders to get to the fire, but also had to wrestle with high winds.
Most of the building is commercial space. Make-up company Bobbi Brown is head quartered here. We're told there's an art gallery inside. The ground floor and lower level is occupied by fashion giant Prada.
Because of all the partitions and newly built rooms, firefighters had their work cut out for them.
FDNY Chief of Operations: "It was a really difficult fire to fight, lot of hidden voids. It got up into some duct work on the first floor and traveled up to the fourth floor. We had 20 foot-high ceilings, which makes it very difficult to open up to find the fire."
At one point there were some evacuations. In the back part of this building, on the lower level, is a restaurant, Lure Fish Bar, and when the fire broke out about 400 people there having dinner had to be evacuated.
Six firefighters and one other person received minor injuries and there is still no word on what caused this fire.
