360 BC, dead?

Linky

We've been informed today that there are going to be no more Backward Compatibility updates released for the Xbox 360 until March at the earliest. Microsoft's David Reid has stated that the team who do the BC work are on holiday throughout January and will start work on priority titles when they return. But from what it sounds like, there will be only a few more updates released through 2006.

This will come as a disappointment to many new Xbox 360 users, not only because the lack of new 360 titles but also any new plain Xbox titles they may like the look of (Black for example) will not work on their shiny new 360. It is no wonder less Xbox games are being sold now.

"from what it sounds like..." part seems a bit suspect. if true, very bad. I like BC.
anyway, opinones?

Did anyone not see this coming?

Honestly. I guess I'll never get Riddick BC :/

Looks like I'm buying a ton more PS2 multiplatform games instead. Good going MS.

Sucks indeed, glad I didnt get rid of my PS2 too.

If they can get Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Phantom Dust, or Riddick up, I'll be satisfied.

But this emulator just isn't cutting the mustard.

At its present quality rate, I think even every game compatible would be unnacceptable.

They certainly deserve a holiday. All the hardwork providing bug-free BC must have been exhaustive during launch.

I saw several posts saying the team was on vacation right after the launch, and then boom, all Ubi's games got added. I say wait an see.

I started doing this the moment I heard "limited BC". Almost all my 3rd party titles are for PS2, hey if MS doesn't want my money its not my problem.

I can't tell if you're sarcastic or not.

yeah, i've never heard of it either.
though then there is that podcast thingie mentioned earlier.

the "few updates through 2006" bothers me too. basically
whatever hope there was is pretty much shot.
maybe i'll get a few more of my games.

they were working hard during the holidays to get us an update that let us play Splinter Cell games. now that the pressures of launch window are over, they get a holiday and come back ready to get the Orta's of the world working

The problem with keeping an Xbox is the same with keeping a PS2. Those drives are giving out, but unlike with the PS2, there aren't any upcoming exclusives that warrant replacing the system.

I'm pretty sure that we've already made our quota for 360 BC doom and gloom threads this month, haven't we?

In any case, regardless of the tone in the article, MS has kept their word thus far regarding BC...they are on break at the moment and, once they get back, they'll get to work on an update...looking at it that way, March seems right on time. Plus, all will be forgiven if the update includes a ton of games.

Some of them will just plain never work, unless they decide to support an Xbox to USB jack officially. (like Steel Battalion, the DDR titles) It looks like a lot of the ones that are currently off have Xbox Live play, which could possibly take longer to get emulated (and compatible with the network) correctly.

Just keep your Xbox until they sort it out, what a bunch of whining pussies!

Good logic! Because everyone who buys a 360 already owned an Xbox! And people that owned an Xbox didn't have to sell their Xbox to get money for a 360!

YOU ROCK.

I didn't have to sell my XBOX to buy a 360. Your logic isn't any better. I kept my XBOX for this reason. In case they don't sort this shit out I can still play the ton of XBOX games I own.

Not everyone has the room to just keep adding new consoles to their entertainment center.

Hey, Only Person On the Earth, no one gives a shit that YOU didn't have to sell your Xbox. SOME PEOPLE DID. Get a god damn clue.

Asshat, you said people that owned one had to trade it in for a 360. That is a large godamn number and you are wrong. You need a clue. I also know people personally that didn't have to sell their system to get a 360. Just because you had to doesn't mean everyone else had to. If you think I'm the only one that has both system sin their home then you are retarded. You come to this damn forum each day. You hear how the BC is for the system yet you still trade in your XBOX and keep the games HOPING MS makes them all BC? If you did that then you are more retarded than I initially thought.

Well, people were originally expecting about a dozen AAA Xbox titles to be playable by now.

Instead, we have over 200, the best of which are unplayable.

So yeah, underpromise, overdeliver, smash the delivery truck into a telephone pole.

.. What the hell are you talking about? I never said I had to. I don't even own a 360. And I never said you're the only one who have both. But the FACT is that a lot of people sell their old systems now because of backwards compatability.

And you seem to be so stupid, ignorant, and childish to not understand the fact that sometimes people DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY to just buy a new system, so they sell old systems and/or games.

You're a fool. Please don't think just because you didn't have to deal with it, doesn't mean people who do should "stop bitching". Microsoft screwed up big time with this and at one point I believe promised monthly updates. People have EVERY right to bitch. Grow up.

I expect that there will be a slurry of BC announcements and releases shortly before PS3's and the Rev's release to try and divert attention back to the 360. That said, the 360 is still dead to me.

Sounds a lot like what was in Edge Magazine this month in their interview with David Reid (probably where they got this info). Says there is a extended version of the interview can be found at www.edge-online.com but for the life of me I can't find it.

How often can we expect updates?

Well, one thing's for certain: the team right now is principally on holiday - they've worked really hard and are taking time out into January to spend with their families. But when they come back, there's that list of prioritised titles to start working on. When there's a critical mass of titles that make it worthwhile to update, that's when it's time to ship. The next one will certainly be in 2006, and certainly in the spring, but who knows in which exact month that might be?

That is a fantastic quote! :lol

This is old ass news. A major nelson interview in December stated as much when they said that the BC team was taking a break until then.

You just changed the argument around. When did I say that everyone has a ton of money and can by a 360 without trading in their old system? All I said was that your logic was shit. You said people in general traded in their XBOX to get a 360. I said I didn't and I'm sure many on this forum didn't because they did NOT expect MS to get all of the games running. Now you'r talking about people financial problems and telling me to grow up? Argue your point and don't change the fucking subject. All you had to do is say, ok, SOME PEOPLE had to trade in their system. Not get sand in your vagina.

Flexible scheduling.

Strategic planning from home, a new perspective with familiar surroundings. Serenity-inspired backward compatibility.

I NEVER SAID PEOPLE IN GENERAL. But it is a FACT that a lot of people do. It's not arguable. I mentioned financial problems in my initial post so I'm not "changing the subject". And hey, this forum? Let me clue you in on something: we're nerds who get annoyed when we can't find out how much Barbie's Horse Adventure sold in December. The rest of the world? They expect 360 to play Xbox 1 games right away. They're not retards for not knowing the truth either.

Um...no.

The rest of the world expects no such thing.

MS has never released a product that was backward compatible with Xbox games (obviously, their first console).

Backward compatibility is not printed on the box or any of the retail materials. Not advertised in the commercials.

Joe Casual expects nothing of the sort.

People in general that don't visit the net or read forums are fucked and it sucks. I wasn't saying otherwise. Again, it is why I, kept mine and so did my friends. The way you worded your argument against the other poster, it seems like you believed people with the XBOX traded it in for money towards a 360. I just said your logic was bogus because a lot of people know this BC might not float so we kept our XBOX. You got all hostile.

I wish it worked 100% but after reading how it was handle I thought most people on this forum would know better. Some here kept their XBOX and others traded it in. No way am I going to since I have a bunch of games I'm still going through. I hope they do get the XBOX games all working but I don't think they will.

EDIT: SPEEVY I'm sure some consumers read about it mags or in glancing. Then they put in their fav XBOX game to go OH SNAP.

Wrong. Joe Casual expects it to do just what PS2 did. Trust me.

You're not qualified. Trust me. So few people have the Xbox 360 that word of mouth of its non-compatibility will reach quickly to the few people that have it, and the rest will go in with that assumption.

Again, here are the facts, not my assumption.

There exists an obscure section of www.xbox.com detailing backward compatibility. That's the only way anyone would know about it from MS themselves. If anything, consumers expect no backward compatibility from all non-Sony systems. Why? Because there haven't been any in the past...20 years.

You would think this lull in releases for the 360 would be the time they'd focus on BC the most. I never owned an Xbox, so that whole "shoulda kept your old system retard" arguement doesn't apply. There are a number of Xbox titles old (conker, doom 3, street fighter collection, etc) and looming (BLACK!) that I'd like to get during this slow period, but can't since MS is half assing it. Basically, I want to improve their software numbers but they're poor planning is preventing it. Never a good sign.

Out of the three machines (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox), Xbox seems to have been the least owned at GAF, so you're not alone.
