Toshiba said on Monday it had won support for the HD DVD optical disc standard from Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Studios and New Line Cinema, advancing its cause in the battle for the next-generation DVD.

The Wall Street Journal that pre-empted this announcement also said one of the Blu-ray founders group, Samsung, were going to start selling HD-DVD players next year.

Next summers big hits such as King Kong, War of the Worlds and Batman Begins all on HD-DVD by holiday 2005!
