How long does the first charge (new out of the box, before use) need to be?

People are telling anywhere from 3hrs - 9hrs.

The manual says 4, so I did it for 4. At the end of 4 I checked it and the iPod said "Charged" so I took it off the charger. Didn't seem to last very long the next day so I left it on the charger overnight after letting the battery run almost empty. It's had much better battery life today, so I think it's fine.

Came charged, I think I used it straight out of the box, after pumping songs into it.

Heck it charges while you put the music on it, just do that.

The ipod battery doesnt have a memory effect like a mobile phone so i dont think you can screw up the battery life like that.

Any modern mobile phone shouldn't have a memory problem either. Li-Ion technology simply doesn't have it.

While we're yapping about the 4GB iPod, is it using an actual hard drive or is it so small because it uses solid state media (i.e. the 4GB compact flash cards now available). Sure, I could research this, but you know, the lazy thing...

There's a hard drive in there. Solid state? Well, you think it's expensive now...

For only storing 4GBs, I think it's incredibly expensive, but I suppose for some people size and weight takes top priority, and I can appreciate that. Fry's was selling 30GB Nomad Zen Xtra's for 200 bucks last week and I picked up one of those. Only about 8 ounces and pretty small - I use it primarily as a music player and occasionally as a porn taxi between work and home. Sorry about the temporary derailment there...

Well, a smaller physical size always equates to higher prices. Check out other players that store a similar amount of space and have similar dimensions, the Mini isn't too far out of line with those.

Actually by "4G" the original poster meant "Fourth Generation" of the full-sized iPod, which comes with either a 20GB or 40GB hard disk drive. But even the iPod mini, which has 4GB of storage space, uses a small hard disk drive.

I did a little bit of research and it turns out the 4GB iPod mini is using a Hitachi Microdrive. While not the typical laptop HD found in the larger players, I believe it's a moving mini-drive no less. Interesting.

Here's some pictures of the little dude on the autopsy table...
