50 Cent & Eminem Speak On The Making Of "Patiently Waiting"

Have you ever wondered how your favorite classic rap song was made? In Complex TV's Magnum Opus, these monumental records from our past are revisited. With in-depth interviews from the artists involved to first-hand accounts of respected rap peers and critics of the time, viewers get a blueprint of how the song was created, what impact it had, and how its legacy continues to live on. New episodes of Magnum Opus can be found exclusively on Complex TV.

50 Cent—a self-made street king—made the jump to rap's biggest act when he released his 2003 debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin'. The project marked the start of his newfound relationship with Eminem and Shady Records, one that would lead to an unrivaled run together in the 2000s. That impending run was foreshadowed on their collaborative effort, "Patiently Waiting." In Complex TV's latest episode of Magnum Opus, the South Jamaica, Queens, MC breaks down the story of how this classic record came together.

50 Cent's brush with death in 2000 is the kind of story that makes a legend. Just as important to his legacy was his ability to bounce back following the shooting, as the rapper continued his impressive musical output despite losing out on a deal with Columbia Records. Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, came across 50 Cent's independently released 2002 project, Guess Who's Back, and were immediately intrigued. "At that point and time I think we had found out he wasn't signed yet," Eminem says.

Fast-forward to 50 Cent signing with Shady and recording several records with Em, one of those being "Patiently Waiting," a street-laced cut that highlighted their chemistry on wax. The song was anchored by a hard-nosed, yet melodic hook, something 50 Cent never overlooks when creating in the studio. "If I can't find the chorus, I don't know what I'm writing really," he says.

Check out the full episode of Magnum Opus above, which also includes commentary from Sha Money XL, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, DJ Whoo Kid, Mike Elizondo, Luis Resto, and Complex's own Chief Content Officer Noah Callahan-Bever, who discuss the importance of "Patiently Waiting" when it dropped, and how it put the reign of Shady into motion.

50 Cent's fifth studio album, Animal Ambition, is available on iTunes, as well as G-Unit's latest project, The Beauty of Independence.

50 is MC hammer status of relevancy in hip hop for the last 4-5 years, but because he's rich we still have to hear about him, sigh

Good video. 50 was unstoppable when GRODT dropped. Patiently Waiting was definitely one of my favorites off the album.

He sold 200k records this year, far cry from 10 years ago, but he's not MC Hammer status.

MC Hammer couldn't sell 10k copies today so nah.

Before J Cole, the highest selling Rap album this year sold about 400k total (Iggy), and she had monster hits with Fancy & Black Widow.

200K? His animal ambition album had like 10 videos and he performed on ABC but barely did 50K first week. The G Unit EP did like 14k first week

200k total, The G-Unit EP was a surprise and it did pretty well for an EP.

10 low budget videos whats your point? he shoots videos for almost everything now.

He only release 1 song to radio "Smoke" an it hit #16 on Urban radio, he leaked the whole album week by week before it was out. He made 3 million of that album independently.

Lol @ believing those fairytale numbers, they are notorious for pulling numbers out their ass to look good

He only had one radio song because that was the only song to somewhat click and even that was a flop
