A Dirty Hippy Stole my PSP >:(

Okay, so today I'm eating lunch at Borders (Redmond Town Center) with the crew before we go out campaign canvassing (a horrible, tedious, soul-sucking job that involves begging people door-to-door for money). So I'm sitting at the table with about 10 other people, and I want to check out the WiFi there at the cafe. I whip out the PSP but the battery's dead. No biggie. I put it back in my bag and head out the door for a smoke a few minutes later. Soon after that, it's time to roll and everyone's heading out. I run back in, collect my bag and leave for the cars with everyone else. I don't even notice it was missing until just now.

And now we hear the news that we can downgrade to 1.5. I had a one gig stick in the handheld as well as a copy of Lumines. Also, today was my last day. Just fucking DANDY.

Now, I remember seeing a boxed salad on top of my bag and asked around about it at the parking lot, it belonged to a girl I work with. I doubt she had anything to do with it, but I'm willing to bet it was one of three people who are bit on the grungy side and saw me tooling around with it.

Tomorrow I'm going to call Borders and ask if anyone happened to find one lying around, and I'm also going to let my bosses know that it's missing. It's got a couple of tell-tale signs - I ended up getting the thing wet, and neither the brightness or the tone function buttons work. There's also a weird issue where pressing the Menu button will mute and un-mute the sound. I'm going to ask that they check any black PSPs that happen to appear in the office for those unique features.

Barring that, is there any sort of digital signature that would allow me or Sony to track where the PSP might be accessing the web? I don't know a terrific amount about wireless networking, but it seems like this might be a possibility.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks.

meh, another "my psp got stolen" thread...

I feel sorry for you but there really isn't a point to these kind of threads is there?

on the other hand, I can imagine how hard it sucks to lose $250 to some fuck who probably doesn't even understand the value of money anyway...

Another one who takes his psp out in public gets his stolen. Next time dont take the damn thing out in public until it costs less than $150 preferabbly less than $100. Imagine the psp like carrying $250 in notes, would you show it in public?

we need a lock system so that you can lock it down so that the thing is useless if stolen by scum/chavs

That's what I was thinking...Or just act like a friend I have. One day some guys tried to steal his mobile phone...They were 4 and he was alone. He throw it to the floor and broke it..."If it isn't for me, it isn't for nobody".

I have always wondered why the other 4 didn't begin hitting him.

because he actually gave up the phone and embellished that part of the story where he threw it to the ground.

One of your workmate stole it. Have a nice day

Actually, I should have clarified - the people I work with ARE the dirty hippies in question. I think my (former) bosses will be really interested to see if the PSP turns up, because someone who takes from his coworkers can and will just as easily claim solicited donations as their own.

It was a pretty stupid thing playing it in public like that. Also, this isn't a toughguy post, but I hope you make them pay by way of something more than by simply having it returned.

Do you have any actual reason to believe that, or are you just a bigot?

So...the moral of the story is, if you didn't smoke you would still have your PSP?

Anyway, I've played my PSP in public as well...and call me paranoid, but I would never leave my bag in the open like that. Unless it was being watched by someone I really trust.

Too bad they don't make these for people:

:lol

Can't even leave that thing unattended for 5 minutes, damn savages.

Make it affordable sony, so people don't have to steal one to play one.

Do you wake up in the morning fantasizing about how you can accuse someone of being racist or intolerant? I swear, every post I see with your whatever the hell picture that is as your avatar, you're making some claim or another that so and so said something bigotted.

This is the Internet, deal.

Sorry if that makes me intolerant to guitarists with bags on their heads.

---

As for whether or not every stolen PSP is thread-worthy, I think it is if only because anyone who just lost $400+ worth of his stuff, especially on a day where that $400 just became far more valuable, has every right to bitch and let off some steam. I'd be furious. I bet he felt good after letting out that "dandy" in all caps.

I wonder how through how many units the average PSP buyer has gone. I assume you will buy a second one, no?
The AVERAGE buyer? No more than one unit, I'm sure.

I swear, you're wrong.

And sorry if it offends you that I find randomly accusing people of crimes because of how they look is offensive and stupid. I've seen it happen plenty of times, and normally the person making the accusation has been wrong.

You're almost certainly right. I'm probably more interested in the average PSP owner that posts on video game forums. :p

living in Japan has spoiled me big time.. I do stuff like getting up and leaving my iPod on the table in a cafe and what not... things I would never do in the states... Not saying that stuff doesn't get stolen here.. but it hasn't happened to me yet

Indeed what the hell?

"Hey guys, look at my expensive piece of equipment! I'll just carelessly leave it in my bag, go all the way outside leaving my bag out of view for a few minutes and not bother to check on it when I get back. Surely it'll still be here..."

The "snatch 'n grab" guy's story was at least more understandable.

I'm mildly sorry to hear that though...

so you left your bag unattended by 10 people you didnt know and someone stole it?????? yeah that be your fault

That's probably not where the problem was - from what he said they were leaving the place when he got back, and the bag had been left completely unattended. My money would be on someone who wasn't one of his colleagues having taken it after everyone left. If there are ten other people there, in order for one person to steal the PSP, the other nine have to either not notice or agree to cover it up.

Sensible thing to have done would have been to ask one of them to look after the bag, IMO. At least then you've got someone to blame with good reason if the PSP goes missing.

"here's the latest merchandise fellas.

i'm just going to place it down under your noses...

...i'm turning my back now, be good....

MY GOOD LORD IT'S GONE!

WOE IS ME! HELP ME GAF!"

you see where i'm coming from? :)

Not sure where you guys live at, but whipping out a PSP, putting it back in a bag, and then just leaving that bag sitting on the floor and expecting the PSP and the bag to still be there is a bit of wishful thinking.

This happened to me, but with a GBA (this was shortly after launch, when GBAs were not the ubiquitious uber-cheap commodity that they are today). The unit and about six games, stolen. It sucks, but it taught me a valuable lesson: if you're going to take the risk of using expensive gear in public, never, ever, ever leave it off your person for even 30 seconds. People are scum.

Christ, people. It's not his fault it got stolen. He didn't hold it up in the air and yell "HERE'S A PSP! COME AND GET IT, BOYS!". Sure, he could have been more careful (like wrapping his entire bag in barbed wire, which is something it seems like some of you would expect him to do if there's a PSP inside), but cripes. Someone stole it, it really sucks, end of story. I feel very bad for all the people on here who have had their PSPs stolen, no matter how it was stolen and such. It still sucks, they're still out of $250 (at least). DOES GAF HAVE NO HEART? :)

I can't believe you people don't complain more often about living in a country where you can't use your PORTABLE GAMING DEVICE in public because it'll probably get stolen or you'll be mugged.

I'm not gloating, I just think I'd go insane if I had to deal with a society like that. Things are heading in that direction here too, but it's slow, and you can quite safely play your gaming devices in public. People use their laptops on the trains, etc.

The 'dirty hippie bit' is a joke, but the the majority of them ARE pot-smokers, if not all, and they're all activists. Seems a fitting description.

I don't. At least no more than twice a year. :D

Thank you, Mr. Biglesworth! You are such a warm-hearted, understanding soul. :) The issue here isn't that I waved it around in public, but more that I left it in a bag in plain view of 10 people I -thought- I could trust. Looks like I was wrong. C'est la vie.

Man people suck.

I say pee in the office coffee pot, sure there is going to be collateral damage but at least you can take solace in that you probably got the bastard.

Still doesn't mean they'd have done it, though. Now, if they were on crack rather than weed I'd be more tempted to jump to the conclusion with you...

I thought you said they were leaving and you had to head back to the bag? Look to the time when the bag was in plain view of nobody you thought you could trust for the crime to take place...

You leave your bag unattended after you just exposed your PSP to surrounding eyes in order to go outside for a smoke and you're surprised it got stolen? You were in a store where other people (aka strangers) could easily watch what you are doing. Not to mention, do you honestly think you could trust your 10 stoner coworkers.

edit: damn my typos :(

This reminds me of how people (foolishly) trust that their bags and its contents will still be there at sports drop-in events.

Let's say for volleyball, people usually just leave their bags near the door and then go to different courts to play, so their bags are the other side of the gymnasium. I'm so careful (paranoid) that I would always take my bag with me when rotating around the gym to the different courts.

Well, I for one applaud him for not being the cynical mofo most of you seem to suggest for him to be.

I think the freedom of not having to play your PSP covertly and thinking of every human as a potential thief is worth $400.

Well said. Everyone else, why do you hate freedom? :lol

Seriously though, is there any more information on locating the MAC Addess and/or username of the PSP when connecting to the web?
