It's March again, and you know what that means! Resume using Daylight time formatting for those in areas observing Daylight Saving time!
--------------
Previous EDIT: As of November 2, 2014, Daylight Saving Time has ended.
You may resume using EST/CST/MST/PST.
See you again in March! =)
--------------
Note: This thread only applies to areas which observe Daylight Saving Time. If you live in an area that doesn't, you can safely ignore this and enjoy having gotten the proper amount of sleep last night.
So, for the past 4 months you have been happily referring to your time zones as (for instance) EST, CST, MST, and PST.
However, with the start of Daylight Saving Time, that notation is now incorrect. The correct notation would now be: EDT, CDT, MDT, and PDT
Why is this? Well, let's look at what the letters stand for. Let's take the Eastern time zone for an example.
EST = Eastern Standard Time = Daylight Saving Time is not in effect (time is "standard")
EDT = Eastern Daylight Time = Daylight Saving Time is in effect (time is non-standard)
So, right now it is currently 1:20PM EDT, 12:20PM CDT, 11:20AM MDT, and 10:20AM PDT.
If you live in an area which does not observe Daylight Saving Time, again, you may feel free to ignore this notation - but do remember that everyone around you has adjusted their time, so take that into consideration when interacting with them.
Enjoy the next 8 months.
EDIT: Oh yeah, also, it's Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time
