Acclaim is back??????

I'm not really sure what the point of this is, all their IP was sold off anyways so they're coming back in name only and publishing a bunch of bargain bin indie games? Weird.

Love to see Acclaim back and I wish them the best, and I appreciate to see somebody else supporting indie games, but I personally think that the games shown lack punch and specially are too weak in the visuals side to be successful, probably with Katanaut as exception.

In any case, let's hope they perform well enough to continue and that future games are more appealing to me.

Acclaim with no known Acclaim IPs, which I guess isn't too surprising for a studio that just recently came back, but it's still disappointing nonetheless. The games look fine.

Kinda weird that Acclaim, once upon a time as a company running side to side with the big boys, now having a nice walk alongside Devolver

Nothing wrong with that. I'm very much into it. Just kinda weird

Where is my Wizards and Warriors and Iron Sword on the Switch.
Bart Simpson vs the space mutants.
Smash TV
Populous
T&C surf designs
etc....

Come on, at least give us the wizards and warriors trilogy or a collection if you can't put it on the nso nes app.

I'm going to have to change my grade to a d now knowing the basketball game is already out.
why resurrect the names if you're going to go with just a bunch of d tier Indies.

I don't want to go into too much detail, but yeah - they bought the name, but it's basically another generic indie publisher and they knew that was going to be the case from the start. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing (and it's not like Acclaim's IPs were ever particularly good), but... yeah. Some of the dudes are a lil' slimy for my liking. That's all.

thank you for the insight.

Wizards and Warriors was so good and so fking hard.

HyperYuki looks like Jet Set Radio and SSX had a baby.
The only slightly interesting title of this showcase.

The rest is... Let's say Acclaim stays dead for me. The whole thing had absolutely nothing to do with the heritage old Acclaim built. I know, most of the rights have been sold and claimed by other companies (looking at you, Throwback...). But come on.. nothing? Not even the slightest effort to create something that doesn't ignore what Acclaime was made of?

😂 It was close. Acclaim had Turok, Shadow Man, Extreme G...

Midway had Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Rampage, Cruisin....yea on second thought maybe I got those mixed up 😅

Warner Bros. now owns Mortal Kombat, Rampage (released a movie with the Rock) and I think the Crusin' series?

Electronic Arts now owns the NBA jam series. The last time EA did anything with NBA jam was in 2010 - 2011 with a version that was made for the Wii, PS3, 360 and mobile devices like iOS and Android.

I had this for iOS (I still do, but it was de-listed), and it was honestly a faithful recreation of the original. Sad that EA never made more of them.

Oddly enough, Nintendo actually owns Cruis'n

That actually makes a lot of sense to me, given that Nintendo published the original Crusin' USA. Interesting to know. WB did buy the bulk of Midways old back catalogue, but there were some franchises that were sold off to other publishers.

I want to say that EA bought the majority of Midway's old Sports franchises. EA also did end up with The Simpson's license for many years. But their licensing deal ended and I don't think they ever renewed it.

Yeah, It depends on when you came in, and also what franchises clicked for you. Acclaim did occasionally get it's cat together and put things out worth owning.

(*They also had a few studios which were acclaimed before they became part of Acclaim, such as Iguana, Probe, Sculptured Software. These were work-for-hire studios which only ever did as good a work as the company paying them could afford to pay for, but check out their resumes if anyone is curious what that time was like from a dev perspective.)

...But, of course, Midway was Midway.

Both companies were capable of shitting out crap or actually , but only one pioneered genres and created all-timers by hall-of-famer devs.

Oh, and only one made great pinballs!

Also, sadly for Chicago, only one has resurrected. But WB Games still has a chance to be a Midway not an Acclaim.

Acclaim Entertainment was killed off over 20 years ago. A group of investors just launched a new company using the Acclaim trademark. They don't even make games. They are a publishing company only. I doubt anything noteworthy is going to come from them when indies that have a solid game in their hands know there are better publishers out there for them.

To be fair. That's how the original Acclaim started as well. They were essentially just a publisher that outsourced development to other developers... most of those developers were the sames ones that LJN would outsource their games to as well. Rare, Beam, Realtime Associates, Probe, Sculptured Software. Over time, Acclaim did start to cultivate their own studios with Iguana being the most noteworthy one.

Acclaim back in the late 80's and early 90's really just built themselves up by acquiring popular IP's through licensing deals, purchasing other studios and IP's when they could. They even purchased LJN and used that as an off-brand for a while. But mostly acquired LJN for the IP's.

Here; this new reboot of the Acclaim brand, they clearly wet to itch.io and such, scouted around for potential indie games to publish and made some deals. There was nothing in this presentation that blew me anyway in any meaningful way. They are coming off as a Devolver Digital lite right now. Who knows, how it will play out?
