I think I mentioned a bit back that the biggest hole in my DVD collection is the lack of old school kung fu films... so based on reviews from one of my favorite review sites kungfucinema.com I'm focusing on adding some Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung to my collection. In no particular order pretty much as I win and buy them off ebay. First up Shaolin Wooden Men... slow, decent raining sequences, and nice fight sequences... and the final sequence... me likes... me likes....

haha it's so fun watching Jackie in those uber old movies before the comedy and plastic surgery. He's changed so much about his style over the years. I like Shaolin Wooden Men too.

Darien also try to find Young master and Fearless Hyena

might i suggest a few sammo and yuen biao classics

The magnificent Butcher

The prodigal Son

Warriors two(this one is just awesome)

Encounters of the Spooky kind (best ending ever)

and some recent 80s classics with Jackie:

Dragons Forever
Wheels on Meals
Winner and sinners (not much for action but damn i love the old school comedy)

5 Masters Of Shaolin
The Clan of the White Lotus <- my fav
Legendary Weapons of China
Flying Guillotine 1 and 2
Duel to the Death
The 36 Chambers of Shaolin
Return to the 35 Chambers of Shaolin
Street Fighter Series (+ bonus Sister Street Fighter recommendation)

And perhaps my favorite.. THE LONE WOLF AND CUB SERIES! (also known as Shogun Assassins in the states)

The first 3 movies are classics that every oldschool martial art fan should watch at least 30 times.

Most of the ones you guys have mentioned are already on my purchase list... and I've owned Five Venoms... it seems like forever. ;) Didn't they appear together in another movie as well?

I'm not really looking just for jackie chan stuff that was just a starting point to work outward from.

Shuri: What actors are in those movies and how action packed are they.

I never liked master of flying guillotine too much other thant he variety of styles in teh tournament part.

No I don't... and after that dvd database recommendation thread we had eons ago I really planned on it, but it's just one of those projects that sits on the backburner.

Be warned though(once I do get it up somewhere...)... my DVD collection is all OVER the place in terms of what people think are "good" or "bad" movies... but yeah Drive kicks so much ass it isn't even funny... even though I hate Kadeem Hardison.

I've actually never seen it but I keep hearing that Only the Strong another Dacoscas film is really good. I'm following it on ebay but since it's an older film I'm not feeling the prices they keep closing at. I know this forum has mixed views of Brotherhood of the Wolf... but goddamn do I love that film... not just for the fighting(and there's some nice brutal fighting in it), but something about the look of it... oh yeah... and the final fight features a bone version of Ivy(Soul Calibur)'s sword... that probably has a little to do with my liking too... though I wish that fight was a bit longer....

i hear crying freeman is suppose to be good. The capoira Dacoscas movie was dissapointing ( i think it was only the strong the one you are looking for) it was just not well directed :(

I have mixed feelings about Crying Freeman(which I do own)... I know the focus of that character isn't on martial arts... but I felt that the movie really shortcut the hell outta of the character's origin, etc.... still the final sequence was done well. That's disappointing about Only the Strong... I'll still probably pick it up on the cheap. My favorite "modern day" stuff right now is probably still So Close and Naked Weapon... Volcano High(non US version) is cool... but it's less on actual physical fighting. I have Michelle Yeoh's last martial arts movie.. Silver Hawk... ummm the fighting is good.. the rest... ouch.... but that's most I've gotten to see Michael Jai White fight in any movie which is too bad, he's pretty damn good.

Here are reviews of each of the movies I recommended
5 Shaolin Masters
Clan of the White lotus, Featuring Gordon Liu
Legendary Weapons of China
Flying Guillotine
Flying Guillotine II

Master of the Flying Guilottine is unrelated to those two movies.

Duel to the Death
Duel to the death is my favorite Kinetic Wuxia type movie. It doesnt take itself seriously but never falls into parody. A favorite

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, featuring Gordon Liu again
Return to the 36th Chamber with Gordon as well
Two classics Shaw Brothers, perhaps the most representative icons of the oldschool genre of martial art movies.

The Street fighter, featuring Sonny Chiba
A pretty exploitative ma series featuring our favorite killer, Sonny Chiba in the role of a pretty dirty hitman in the '70. He kills without pity and just doesnt care. the series isnt without its faults, but you can find it easily for mad cheaps in the states. I got some sort of compilation for 10$ for a single dvd at HMV with The Street Fighter 1, 3 and Sister Street fighter. The quality isnt all that great, but for 10$, it's .. acceptable. A lot of movies lifted scenes straight out of The Street Fighter movies, for example the x-ray bonebreaking cam from Romeo Must Die

THE LONE WOLF AND CUB SERIES
Perhaps my favorite series, as Stated, the story tells the adventures of Ogami Itto and his son, Daigamo, as they travel Japan doing mercenaries missions for Dojo, while being hunted by Ogami's former boss. The bodycount is IMMENSE (100+ kills every movie), the cinematography is awesome in the first movies. The last 2 movies where directed by another person, and the fights are a little less epic in their nature.

Still, I wish I had money to buy you guys complete boxsets of that series, it's REALLY worth it. A martial art movies fan's collection would be incomplete without at least the first 3 movies.

The first 3 movies are
Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at River Styx
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades

I couldnt find reviews online for #2 and #3, since google is polluted to hell nowadays, but they are all equally good. If you guys are going to buy the Lone Wolf Series, don't deal with cheap bootlegs and foreign versions, Get the releases from the compagny called AnimeEigo, the image quality is pristine, the subtitling work is the best I've ever seen for a MA movie.

AnimeEigo also has EXCELLENT releases of Lady Snowblood 1 and 2, who were completly ripped off by Quentin Tarentino for Kill Bill

For the other movies, except for Street fighter and Duel to the Death, I recommend you guys to import the INCREDIBLE region 3 dvds made by a company called CELESTIAL PICTURE. They are currently re-releasing the completle Shawn Brothers Catalogue in DIGITALLY REMASTERED video and reworked video. The subs are available in chinese, thai and of course english. I own about 10-15 of their dvds, and they are great quality. Don't deal with cheap versions, they really spoil the experience.

Hope this post was useful!

You can buy it from their site here: http://www.animeigo.com/Samurai/LWC.t . It's a bit expensive, but it's worth it. I like how their translations also has mini subs that explains some more technical terms or impossible to translate in the upper part of the screen. They are the some of best crafted crafted dvds for that kind of movies.

Anyone see Super Ninjas? I haven't seen it in forever. Maybe 20+ years ago. I really liked it when I was a kid. I wonder if it sucks just cause I was a kid and stuff like this was cool. Apparently the movie is on DVD in the US but it's a TV cut and it's heavly censored. I am hoping that a good version comes to the states so I can watch it.
