Cool video. The train tracks on that brick structure is now a shopping mall and cafe. It's pretty neat. Japan's great.

It's not all that yeah.
Depends on what you're looking for. If you're going there specifically for weeb stuff, some of the good stuff is hard to access if you don't speak Japanese. If all you do end up doing is walking around, poking your head in some random stores, and getting catcalled by the maidgirls, then it's pretty lame.

I'm sure Akihabara

Nagh. I've been in plenty of smut shops in Japan. Akihabara is a freak show of uggo maid girls, tourists, overpriced electronics and awful food.
Well I had fun. I went during the off season. Biggo sad.

The maids are not ugly!

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
Visiting Japan was my most fav trip of my life and Id live there if I could. Hell if I cant live there full time eventually I want to atleast buy a vacation home and visit frequently.

I've been to Japan 3 times and visited Akiba twice out of those trips. never really stick around for that long since I don't plan on buying any figures to bring back on the trip. got a few mangas and games plus play some arcade and that's about it. I still remember back in the days when I watch on TV about Akiba when it was still all about electronics and stuff and it always amazes me. by the time I finally get to go thou it's already turned into the anime/manga central. not complaining since I'm into that too, but since I'm not that interested in maid cafe and figures, there really isn't much else it can offer me. still kinda fun to walk around and get into the shops to check stuff out. and when I get travel to Japan again I'll definitely visit it again.

I thought foreigners weren't welcome?
Do you mean in general or right now? Right now there are a lot of travel restrictions in place. Americans can't even go to Japan without special treatment.

In general, tourists are welcomed, as long as you're not disrespectful to the people or culture.

Two big arcades closed down recently (One of the famous SEGA buildings).

Sad to see the effects of the Chinese Virus on tourism.

I think you can't get into japan right now unless you are Japanese.

Even permanent residents who were caught outside of the country as the virus struck have been stuck outside. I think they've only just begun to ease that restriction, and even then only a little.

Sadly, the arcade wasn’t that great, and they have probably 100 of those arcades throughout Tokyo.

Yeah curb those expectations :D Ive been there over 30 times (work and vacation), property prices, even for rent is insane. You are paying almosy $3000 for a shoe box apartment a month where you cant even fit a 50" TV. So if you want to buy a summer house to just have it chill there and you visit from time to time, even on the country side, I am going to assume you earn in the higher 6 figure salary. Otherwise its just an anime dream.

Living in Japan is expensive in ways that you don't plan on or wouldn't expect. The rent prices are but not that high especially if you're outside the big areas. It's the planning and saving for living long term which requires money.

Japan and tokyo are not equivalent. I live there now and I pay about 600 dollars a month. I'm a 2 hour bus ride away from shinjuku. I lived 1 hour and a half north of tokyo last year for a 5 year old apartment that cost 400 dollars a month.

House market is different though. Houses are not investments and prices age like a car. If you buy a summer cottage it would be like a weekend spent at vegas at the high stake table with hookers and cocaine. You aren't getting that money back. Your cottage would be in the middle of nowhere and don't expect English support when stuff breaks or you want to turn on your utilities.

I was about to say the same thing. $3K per month in rent is a fairly extreme outlier. Rents in the suburbs are much cheaper, and even better in other parts of the country. ie. Comparing the Tokyo rental market with Fukuoka would garner very different results. Tokyo is also getting a bit of a speculative bubble in real estate in the run up to the Olympics which is further distorting prices there.

Unfortunately, when people see quoted prices for Japan and see Tokyo at the top of those lists, they don't realize that the data is compiled by companies that ballpark expenses for expat lawyers and bankers who get stationed overseas, where they crunch numbers to see how much it would cost for them to live the exact same lifestyle in Tokyo as they would in London or New York. Of course, doing something like that would be exorbitantly expensive. =p For the majority of Westerners, if they were to live like the locals while in Japan their cost of living would likely be as much as half that as to their hometown in the West. Japan has had 25 years of deflation making things very cheap over there.

Yup. Fortunately the price/taste ratio is amazing. Price/volume not so much, aside from certain all you can eat places, but I'll take quality over quantity.

I went in ‘06. Didn’t buy anything but spent some time in the Sega store that recently closed.

It was kinda cool seeing al the weeb otaku stuff.

There's a reason why the blog site Tokyo Cheapo is regularly updated to this day. There was a time where I was kind of down and out and mostly living on savings, and I still managed to live decently in a brand new apartment (with marble flooring). In my home country I'd either need to bunk with friends or relatives to avoid being on the street.
The cost of living in Japan spikes once you attempt to start a family, which is one among many reasons why the birth rate has declined. But Japan has some conveniences in place to avoid hitting completely and irreparably rock bottom in life
