In Canada's Alberta, national unity is on the ballot - BBC News

My friend sent this to me and I thought it was BS. Kind of reminds me how Texas every once in a while starts talking about separating from the US.

My Canadian friends on here, any of you who will admit to being from Alberta (joking) and talk about what you think (as in is this just whining and complaining or do the people really feel like this?

FFS, what is it with these destructive separatist retards that plague so many Western Democracies.

..When you look at their leaders that call for separation they're nearly all a bunch of vile, self serving grifters.

There's always been dumbfucks in Alberta who want to separate or join US. They're fucking morons.
Danielle Smith is leading this, chief on-her-knees for Trump. She's under multiple investigations by the RCMP.

They'll probably get a referendum, get like 20%, and it'll be over. It's stupid as fuck, and they'll never get close to 50%+. It's debatable if it could even happen with the First Nations treaties in place requiring them to agree, and the country would have to agree. It's only interesting because of how dumb these people are.

It's a huge waste of time and money by a group of clowns and crooks.

Have you ever been to Alberta?? Those men definitely would not want to be ruled by lefty mentalists.

Pure democracy is mob rule, the dictatorship of the majority. 51% can tell 49% how to live but on subject this is a nothing burger like where I live in California wanting to become the state of Jefferson. Won't happen.

There are always groups that want to separate. Scotland has a large party in favor of it in the UK. I think in Alberta people are tired of the leftist government. I would be to. I mean they wouldn't let a church hold a worship service in Canada the other day.

With the Senate perpetually in a near 50:50 lock I don't think we will ever see a referendum to admit a new state. And if we do, you will see DOZENS of applicants, from presumed 'liberal' places like Puerto Rico and D.C., to the conservative ones like Jefferson. They will try to carve up segments of demographics in a gerrymandering attempt that will make your head spin.

Wouldn't surprise me to see states attempt to eject their cities, like New York City, Chicago, etc in order to scratch out the dense blue zone from all the red around them. That would probably spell the death of our Republic though, and is likely all financed by China/Iran.

It will never happen. The separatist movement is very vocal, but it's small.

If by some miracle it did happen and they separate, and not become part of the U.S., I'd probably move there from Ontario.

Quebec almost voted to break off in the 90s. But even if it was a majority vote doesnt mean federal government has to say yes. Same goes for Alberta. Both provinces arent going anywhere.

Prairie provinces skew heavy into conservatives. And Alberta is a low tax, high income, oil province. So from I remember, they dont like always being a giver of funds and taxes, while getting not much back from the feds.

No we don't. A few are just upset with the previous Prime Minister and fear the new will be the same. It's similar to how the threat of separation is more appealing than actually doing so.

This is mostly true.

The legislation around separation has some vagaries in it but the feds do appear to have the ability to say no but that would be even more disastrous.

We also haven't always been a net contributor to confederation, only the last 40 or 50 years have turned that around. We do pour literally billions into the national economy while receiving little back but scorn from some places.

That being said, I'd fight tooth and nail to remain part of Canada.

No she doesn't. She spoke against the resolution at the convention, she has spoken against it in cabinet, she has spoken against it publicly.

the first question that was approved for the referendum was Thomas Lukaszuks on staying part of Canada.

People need to calm down a bit.

I knew a lot of people didn't realize Central America is part of North America but I guess we're at the point were people aren't counting Mexico either.

I know Central isn't really a thing, we just call it its own thing and treat it like its own thing. But I thought 3 was funnier than including all of Central America.

I'm from Alberta and I agree. The province has been carrying the rest of the county for far too long. Either that or join the USA. Anything is better than Trudeau 2.0. Canada is in deep trouble.

Oh, kind of like how I like to make the comment how we'd be another new country added to the maps since Canada was added back in 82. :messenger_beaming:

I despised Trudeau but what about Carney makes you say 2.0? I know there is all the rhetoric but actual reasons do you have.

He has moved faster on developments that any of them in a long time, including finding a way to tide water for oil and gas, he's removed federal oversight in a number of provincial areas (single approval), he's signalled a doubling (or more) in spending on the military, he killed (most of) the carbon tax.

I'm no liberal but those are all good things imo.

I'd be interested in your comments on his specific short comings.

This is why that province could never break away without outside help (aka the US). The two heavily populated "wings" are very reliant on that middle stretch and would go to war to keep it. The Quebec side MIGHT be able to separate peacefully but the middle never could.

Though its all moot if the Arctic goes ice-free, the land/mineral/oil/sea access grab would be MASSIVE and Canada would just get consumed by the US, if only to keep all that land from being bought outright by China. Ironically, I could see Canada agreeing to be a vassal state of China before joining the US in any direct capacity :P

I, for one, fully support Alberta packing its bags and becoming America's 51st state. Finally, a conservative state that actually pays more than it takes! Down here it's always the blue states footing the bill for the red ones. Please, Alberta, come on over and help support all your broke‑ass cousins in the U.S. We'll even throw in a free Applebee's and a Bass Pro Shop as a welcome gift.

Maybe Albertans can fund the 6 Billion more federal funds that Montana got last year. Thats more money than Gamepass made. Sent to people in Montana. What you guys doing with all the $ up there?

One could argue that the flow of federal dollars to rural states is what keeps the price of food down and prevents rural states from aggressively exploiting their natural resources or holding up water to the densely populated coastal cities. See how well California and the East Coast does then :P

Could you imagine the price of corn with out those sweet subsidies?

Thanks all for the replies. I didn't see this on CBC in April May or June (I tend to watch CBC when the Canucks games finish) and I thought they might mention it on there.

Would love to buy some vacation land and drive all the way up there with no cross border paperworks. It's been forever since I've been on a Canadian road.
I enjoy going to Vancouver (Metrotown area) and Whistler. I told my wife I would move to Squamish in a heartbeat. I love hockey and one of my favorite things to do is hit a bar when a game is on. It's an awesome environment to be in.

Red States: "Ha! No more subsidies? Guess what, coastal elites, corn is now $100 a cob. Wheat? $50 a slice of bread. Let's see how you like that!"
California: "Cool cool. Anyway, just signed a deal with Argentina. They threw in wine and beef for free. Gracias."
New York: "Sushi-grade rice from Japan arriving Friday. BTW, your wheat bread was mid my boi."
Texas (confused): "Wait… y'all can do that?"
Massachusetts: "Global markets, baby. You thought you invented food?"
Washington (state): "We just started vertical farming in warehouses.
Red States: "...so yawl don't need us?"
Illinois: "Not for food, but we do appreciate your country music."

Also Washington State, in order to offset the carbon you are creating with any kind of business, we are going to add another gas tax. And that food will be much more expensive since our minimum wage is insane. Lol AI says the average price of gas here is 4.38. Holy crap how??? Even with the Fred Meyer discounts on gas, I am paying almost $5 a gallon.

Dude, Washington state used to be awesome. Now...not so much because the government keeps f'ing things up. However more people are coming around.

I know little if anything at all about Washington State. Only thing I'll say as a Floridian is I can't imagine paying $5 a gal just to fight traffic.

Well you can always use the HOV toll lanes with a variable charge. I've seen it higher than $12 on heavy traffic days.

Editing to say, I love Florida. The heat, the food, the people, Pensacola beach. I lived there for a year going to Naval A School in Pensacola and if I could convince my wife (she won't go because she hates the humidity) I would move there again.

California: Wait, no more water coming in form the Colorado? Who is gonna grow avocados for us? We are now 100% dependent on shipped in food from the opposite hemisphere? Where do we get our gas now? Can I power my ipad off my own farts? Imported food costs 3x what it did before? Nothing can be shipped to us overland because of the road tariffs levied by Colorado and Oregon? Hang on, TEXAS invaded Panama and took over the Canal? Can they do that?

Point being we are a synergistic organism. The ability to congregate in a massive city far from food and water is a luxury afforded by the sweat of those willing to work "out there". Not to mention the birth rate in those blue cities is often the lowest, so without constant influx they will wither away in just a generation or two

Sorry, that was a bad comparison. Trudeau was a dumb clown, but Carnage is smarter and more dangerous. Being part of the WEF is a bad sign. I don't think the carbon tax is gone, he seeks net-zero emissions and ban of ICE and hybrid vehicles by 2035. What would happen to Alberta then? He is shifting away from our greatest ally, the USA and going towards China and EU, he has done nothing to prevent the tarrifs, he didn't have a government budget, he brought back the incompetent Freeland and most of three ministers are dumb and incompetent. He said "Muslims values are Canadian values ", wrong, Muslims are seeking sharia law , quite different from western values. Immigration is chaotic and uncontrollable, they keep bringing thousands and thousands, accepting terrorists from Iran, the health system is broken, when Indians come here, they sponsor they parents and a lot of their families which are often elderly, straining even more the poor health system. Immigrants should adapt and assimilate to Canada's values and culture and not the other way around. He supports the terrorists hamas and will recognize the terrorist palestinian state. He has no control of the border. High taxes, the country has never had so much crimes and violence. Just a few things, there's lots more. Canada is cooked to the bones!

Red States:"Alright city slickers, no more water, no more food, no more gas. Let's see how you survive now!"
California:"Yo NY! I just bagged a desalination plant on Temu. Free shipping!"
New York: "I Imported bagels from Montreal. Better than ours, honestly."
