I present to you...the 1998 NBA Draft

14 Houston Michael Dickerson Arizona 2G
16 Houston Bryce Drew Valparaiso PG
18 Houston Mirsad Turkcan Efes Pilsen, Turkey PF

Seriously....Bryce Drew....#16? What the FUCK?

Available at the time of the 14th pick...

Matt Harpring
Rasho Nesterovic
Ricky Davis
Ruben Patterson
RASHARD LEWIS (WHO HAD TALKED TO ROCKETS FRONT OFFICE MEMBERS WHO HAD TOLD HIM THEY'D TAKE HIM WITH ONE OF THEIR THREE FIRST ROUND PICKS)

Only redeeming things about the 1998 draft is that two of those 3 were used i the Francis trade the next year, and then the 41st pick, which was a STEAL in the 2nd round.
41 Houston Cuttino Mobley

There are worse ones I'm sure (*cough Sam Bowie*) but I just thought of the worst one I can think of in the past few years for the Rockets

It's got to be Darko, considering that Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony were available. Sam Perkins was an above average player for a while.

I hate Bryce Drew. I mean really. A lot. He was responsible for one of the worst days of my life.

The Bucks take Andrew Bogut instead of Chris Paul.

edit: Guile, don't forget Bosh! They passed on the Big Boshman.

Worst mistake Dumars ever made. The guy will never make another mistake in his life and still nobody will forget about Darko.

"I got the Pistons 16 championships while I was President of the team."
"But you picked Darko...."

:lol it's funny because it's true. I'm with Bill Simmons, I want to see an Ultimate Darko DVD that shows his reactions while sitting on the bench and then Rasheed Wallace laughing at him from the bench when he gets to play in blowouts.

I still can't believe darko broke his hand in the final minutes of the NBA finals last year. I picked up the newspaper the next morning and saw that and I just said to myself "This is fucking ridiculous...."

I never understood why Dumars picked Darko over Wade or Carmelo sure the guy is 7 ft tall but what the hell did they saw in this guy he can't move he can't even tap the ball into the fucking basket, Dumars is a genuis but picking Darko over the other guys available at that time will always baffle me.

Also the Rockets picking Yao over Amare the Suns came out of nowhere picked Amare and laughed at Rockets for buying into hype

I really hope Darko actually turns into something so everyone can eat crow.

But the biggerst draft screwup has to be Portland picking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan. Followed by Charlotte trading Kobe Bryant for Vlade Divac, the Bucks trading Dirk Nowitzki for Tractor Traylor, and Seatle giving up the rights to Scottie Pippen, Bulls giving up Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler.

All of those are much bigger screwups then freakin Bryce Drew.

To be fair, Bryant basically refused to play for the Hornets.

Charlotte wanted Kobe Bryant, but the stupid little bitch didn't want to play for us. Yeah, I'm a little bitter.

But hey, look at the brightside, at least we didn't get a rapist!

But Charlotte were still stupid and used their pick on him and eccentially picked Vlade, kinda like when the Grizzlies picked Francis even after he was quoted all over the media that he never play for them.

First tragedy, then farce.
dont worry, Kobe is on the fast track to being Penny Hardaway II: this time without the puppet.

to be fair, no he didn't. Charlotte never wanted Kobe. West worked out a trade with them ahead of time.

http://www.lonnieg.com/basketballpage.html

No matter what, Kobe will never be able to change the fact that on the back of his basketball cards there will be an asterik saying that he was a Charolotte Hornets draft pick. Kobe was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and promptly held them hostage by saying that he will only play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Charlotte says that Kobe did not let them know this before they drafted him. This put Charlotte is a bad bargaining position because the Lakers knew that Kobe wanted to play only for them.

This guy knows his stuff!!

don't be mad. You guys got a couple years of Vlade :lol

that name probably only rings a bell for new yorkers. #15 pick in the 1999 draft by the knicks...right before local boy ron artest is taken at #16. artest as a knick...that would've been fun.

He will never beat the rap in public opinion, when his name comes up it wont be "Oh, that guy who plays for the Lakers?" it will be "Oh, the RAPIST!!!!!"

WRONG! When his name comes up, its "Oh that guy ran Phil and Shaq out of town". Kobe did that on purpose to get the rape off people's minds. He's a genius.

Or, to the non-basketball fans they will think "Oh, that guy who raped Phil and Shaq and chased them out of LA?!"

Damn, that hurt a little.

And I think you were joking, but we did get some good years out of Vlade. He threw a sweet ally-oop to Glen Rice, great play there.

The Kings pre-Petrie had some amazing turds for draft picks. In one year they had 4 first round draft picks and the players they selected?

Lionel Simmons
Anthony Bonner
Travis May
Duane Causewell

They didn't even get a starter out of four 1st round picks.

To be fair, the 1990 NBA Draft, besides Gary Payton, flat out sucked.

I think i'm walking into a hornet's nest.. but here goes...

Darko wasn't THAT bad of a pick. Cause if you think about it, sure they could have drafted Melo or Wade. But look at the positions those two guys play. Carmelo is a SF, and the Pistions already have a Prince. Wade plays PG, and again, they Pistons already have Billups. Ok, so say either one of them moves to SG, oh wait, that's where Rip is. The only need they had was PF or C. Sure they could have picked Bosh, but who says Bosh would have even gotten a chance to play? If he never gets a chance to play, we could be all saying Bosh is one of the worst picks of all time, instead of Darko. I say give Darko a few more years or at least some REAL playing time before making any assumptions of him being one of the worst picks of all time. Just like when everyone here in Portland, was saying Jermaine O'neal was a big waste of pick, he left, got a chance to play and is top-tier player in the league. Also, you can't really blame Dumars for picking Darko. Any other GM in the league would have picked him too. Hell, if Lebron wasn't in the draft, I'd bet Cleveland would have picked Darko.

Now.. on to the big one.. Sam Bowie...

This one really hits home being a Blazer fan. This is the same problem as the Darko thing. The Blazers had just drafted Drexler and Jim Paxson. Why would they draft another SG? Now, don't get me wrong. If I knew how good Jordan would be, i'd draft him, trade Drexler away or just move one of them to SF. Bowie was supposed to be a "can't miss." Bowie was actually a pretty good player, until his leg was broken and no one really knew how well he'd recover. Again, if he never hurts his leg, he would have been a good-great player in the league, maybe.

Anyways, I think Darko can't be classified as a bad pick until his career is over. Bowie, wasn't a bad pick, just bad luck.

To me, the only real BAD picks, are players who just got over-looked because mis-informed talent analysis and good players who get overlooked because GMs are idiots. Not overlooked because the already has that spot filled.

Len Bias, but that is not fair. Huge MD fan back then, and sad to remember it.

Yeah, Len Bias wasn't a dumb pick, but it was disastrous. While his death came when the Celtics were still contenders, I think it was the first of a series of events (Reggie Lewis, anyone?) that eventually helped them to the perennial also-ran position they've only recently started to come out of with some consistent playoff berths.

Still, they could've picked melo or Wade to trade for somebody who would actually PLAY. Dumars is never given enough credit, I think he could've pulled a deal like that off.

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
I am going to cut Darko some slack.. I mean the boy is 20 years old...just turned 20.. like yesterday. O'neal was a bust too until he was 23 and so was Lewis for the most part.. Also as of now the Pistions just have too many good PFs... Darko can't get any time. Not saying he isn't going to be a bust, but you never know he could very blossom into something great...

Sam Bowie will always be the biggest draft mistake in history:

1984 NBA draft:

1. HOU Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston
2. POR Sam Bowie, Kentucky
3. CHI Michael Jordan, North Carolina
4. DAL Sam Perkins, North Carolina
5. PHI Charles Barkley, Auburn

You missed the all-time assist leader heh

16. Utah Jazz: John Stockton, PG, Gonzaga

Few other guys in there who had long solid nba careers.

9. Kansas City Kings: Otis Thorpe, PF, Providence
11. Atlanta Hawks: Kevin Willis, PF, Michigan State
46. Portland Trailblazers: Jerome Kersey

The 1984 NBA draft and the 1983 NFL draft are easily the 2 greatest drafts of all time. I personally give the edge to 83' NFL but the sheer star power of the 84' NBA makes it easy to argue for either heh. Jordan, Hakeem, Barkley, and Stockton vs. Elway, Dickerson, Jim Kelly, Marino, Clayton, Darrell Green.
