Almost half of video gamers cutting TV use --study

For me, the Internet has replaced the TV, rather than gaming.

As soon as I got net access back in 96, I stopped watching TV.

Years and years ago when shows like 60 minutes were spouting crap about the "Evils of Video Games" or "The Internet IS Bad", I said unto myself: "They must be saying this crap cause they are loosing viewers and is NOT to another TV channel", personally I'm sick of TV and as BeOnEdge said TV is pretty much for women, let them have it, I have far more interesting video games to play.

seriously, the 3 main things i watch on local tv are:

1) All My Children
2) One Life To Live
3) General Hospital [omg, cant believe they killed off the hottest chick on the show!]
4) The Local News

How accurate is Ziff Davis' poll? Look at the sample:
The Ziff study, a random poll of 1,000 people nationwide, was conducted in May and June by the Strategy Group.
Then look at where their numbers come from:
The Ziff Davis Digital Gaming in America survey found that 26 percent of gamers had cut their TV watching over the last year, and a further 20 percent expect to do so this year.
A pool of only 1000 random people (normally, a decent size sample), but then the sample is divided into "gamers." How large was this new sample? It would at least be cut in half (500), which leaves them with too small of a sample give any reliable national percentage. The sample was likely reduced by even more.

Then look at the other claims they make:
The research also found that game players are not just sitting in their living rooms. Half said they play games on their cell phones, for an average of 4.4 hours a week. They also spent an average of $19 in the last 60 days on phone games, the study found.
I call BS!

jj, i'd say the numbers are right. ever since i got my new cell, i've been downloading atleast 1 game a month. i'm currently have tetris, bust a move and ms pacman.

I don't have cable for a good reason.. there's nothing to watch, and it's all loaded with advertisements..
Why should I pay for that?

Until I can subscribe to the only the networks I want (and no others - seriously, why do I need all those spanish channels, besides checking out the hot latinas? :) ), fuck cable TV.

I'm on the internet far more than I am watching tv. Games also take up more of my time than tv. About the only thing I watch on tv is HBO.

wtf? emily???

anyway, these are the shows i watch:

sopranos
entourage
cye
six feet under
law and order
daily show

everything else is pure and utter shit. especially the garbage that populates network tv. do the execs sit around a huge table and honestly wonder why they're losing viewership? do they watch their own shows? it's fucking awful.

i'd rather be on the internet, play a game, or watch a DVD movie than flip through 300 channels hoping to find something interesting other than the shows i religiously watch.

Ahahah, how did I not see this. I know there's this big ass mystery going on about someone who died, but I can't figure out who the hell it is. I never watched it religiously and not at all since May, so being related to Alkazar or whoever means shit to me. Anyways, it means nothing. Sam is the hottest on the show by far, so your description means shit.

And yesterdays All My Children was fucking ace. Best one I've seen in ages.

A little Fox, The West Wing, ER, JAG, ESPN, south park, and adult swim/cartoon network.

MTV used to have some interesting stuff like Clone High, but now they've almost totally sold out to girls, and I don't blame them. The making the game stuff is grasping for straws.

I've also mostly replaced TV w/ the internet. I like reading about stuff I like (sports, gaming, TV ironically, and other things) more than just vegging out in front of the TV to pass the time if I've got nothing to do.

24, Sopranos, Survivor, Everwood, Smallville, OC, Charmed (shut up) and One Tree Hill (shut up) are all I'll care to watch this season that's newly aired. Everything else I like to watch is in reruns (Friends, Everybody loves Raymond and Simpsons) except for That 70s Show, which I just prefer to catch in reruns.

Well I just got done playing about 5 hours of Topspin head to head against 2 buddies of mine. So I'd definitely say my watching of TV has gone down quite a bit and I have 150 channels of digital cable to choose from. I don't mind watching reality TV, but lately I just can't really find much that I want to watch. Now when the US Open starts I'll definitely watch because tennis is one of the few things that I still make time to watch.

When football season starts my viewing will definitely go back up, but for now summer isn't really a great time to watch TV.

When I moved out of home two months ago, I didn't even bother buying an RF lead to plug my TV into the antenna. I kind of miss watching music videos on Rage, but going without TV has been totally painless so far.

I've recently started watching TV shows on DVD and I'm looking for some more suggestions. I like stuff like the Sopranos, The Office, Six Feet Under, Oz... But that's about as far as I've gotten.

Any other essential TV DVD viewing?
