Amazon Greenlights A New Stargate Series

There is a future for the Stargate franchise on television. Today Amazon MGM Studios announced that it has given the green light to a brand new live-action series, which will stream globally on Prime Video.

Veteran Stargate writer and producer Martin Gero created the show and will helm it as executive producer and showrunner. Fellow Stargate alums Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi are also on board as producers. The new series will continue the franchise with the same universe, canon, and tone that made Stargate a global hit.

"This has been a very hard secret to keep for the last 18 months, but we can announce today that a brand new Stargate series is coming to Prime Video," Gero said.

Yep, it's real this time.

I love the movie, but I never watched the series. I know it had McGyver in it for a long time but I never cared enough to watch it.

And, in a surprise twist, Stargate's original creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day) have signed on as executive producers, alongside Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters).

Independence Day Resurgence and Obi-Wan Kenobi creative people involved, what could possible go wrong. :messenger_pensive:

I have a bad feeling about this given the current state of both Star Trek and Star Wars...
but let's hope it won't suck!

it's not a reboot btw. it's set in the same timeline as SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, but it will be its own thing it seems

edit: nvm... there's already a thread 🤣

guys, put the subject of the thread in the first 2 words or so, not at the end of a whole ass sentence... I totally didn't notice the other thread about this because its title starts with "Amazon"...

I love this franchise but with Amazon I have little hope.

depends.
this is a very german-centric example, but they revived Pastewka for 2 final seasons, and those were great and a really good closing chapter to the show.

so I could see this work out. especially since they actually have the original showrunner there and it's not a reboot or anything.

I'm mainly sad that it's not SG-Universe season 3...

hope it's good.

Loved all the series.

Wonder what the angle will be? A 10th chevron?

maybe the Destiny crew managed to establish a stable connection to earth somehow?
they will have to adress what happened to the Destiny in this given that it's not a reboot. so the destiny crew should have reached the next galaxy and be awake again if nothing went wrong

Stargate SG-1 is one of my favorite shows. Roland Emmerich only knows how to make contrived and stupid apocalypse movies, not fun sci-fi. This does not get my hopes up at all.

We already have a number of tv series (old style with 20+ episodes per season) + a number of movies.
And most of them were good.
Even if this new series is good (ZERO chance of that :messenger_smirking: ) the franchise is already been milked.

there's tons of potential left in Stargate.
the big issue is that Universe was cut short and ended on a cliffhanger.
and now they want to start with a different crew, but also have to kinda explain what happened in the last 17 years since the Destiny started its flight to the next galaxy...

like... they have to adress a lot of stuff while also establishing a new storyline. because it's impossible to ignore the Destiny, since its discovery was a huge deal and what it does is also a huge deal.

Very true.

I'd like to see them have the gate network start to collapse for some reason and have there be something in the wormholes that is pushing back. This would also have impacts on ftl in the galaxy which would deminish that mcguffin. Something the ancients knew how to work around but still a fundamental issue they need to deal with.

I'd also laugh if they had the new "Macgyver" actor on the show but kill him off early as a kind of joke.

I only saw the first movie, and IIRC 1-2 episode of one series, but I am still happy for the fans - went to r/Stargate , and there are many, many people celebrating the announcement of the new series.

GateWorld, which I'm not sure if I ever knew about, also seems that it will be more active now.

Just like with return of Ninja Gaiden, and Silent Hill for instance, it's such a joy to see people happy when beloved franchise is back.

Time? Alternate realities? know they've done similar things before, but a sliders/quantum leap type Stargate premise might work.....maybe.

as a Sliders fanboy... I'd be fine with that, but I don't think it would go over well with the majority of SG fans.

they might actually go SUPER save and literally make Stargate SG-2... even name it SG-2, a group of newcomers going through their first missions through the gate.
have O'Neill there as the boss maybe, basically playing the role of General Hammond...

Not a reboot, a continuation! They kept this a secret for 18 months!!!

So Brad Wright is at least a consultant on this, that's a good sign. And Martin Gero did do a lot of writing for SG Atlantis and co-wrote one of the best episodes of SG1.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Amazon has to be involved with a new series because they own the TV rights to the franchise through MGM.

I look forward to the Stargate spinoff series with James Bond.

...because nothing is sacred with those algorithmic driven cunts.

Didnt see Rings of Power but Fallout was good. Better than being a Netflix series.
Fallout was good until the very last episode, IMO.

I just watched Reacher and Jack Ryan and they were both really good shows.

Rings of Power was absolute dogshit.

I'm actually not sure how to take this news.

I refuse to get excited before I see the cast and watch the trailer. It's Amazon so it would be veeeeery easy to take a huge dump on the original material and fanbase.

hope it's good.

Whatever the explanations they should keep it simple and what made the og series so popular - expeditions from Earth are visiting various worlds, leading to bigger arcs and single adventures.

Most of the value of the franchise is the show why bring anyone involved in the movie is beyond me.

You can see this unfolding in the most predictable manner.

I desperately want this to be good. But after what Amazon did to Lord of the Rings with Rings of Power, Jeff Bezos and his shtihole of a company can go fuck themselves. He proved that no matter how much money you throw at a project, it can still suck if it is done by Amazon.

First season of Jack Ryan (and Reacher) was incredible.

They even got Gateworld in the video. Thats awesome. Boys and Gen V are good so its not like Amazon hasn't made good shows. Expanse also. Fallout.

I rewatch these every few years. Made it to Atlantis S1 now. Watching all of it in order and alternating.
