Amazon introduces AI English Dub for Animes

This is so damn soulless. Even the terrible dubs of the 1980s and 1990s at least had some minuscule amount of spirit behind them.

I am not against auto AI dubbing for random Youtube videos in other languages, but absolutely not for commercially distributed animation and movies.

They rolled out AI dub for No Game, No Life, even though it already had an official dub. But they didn't want to pay for that dub license, so they just ran their AI Dub to it. And its just as every bit flat as the example before, and a bunch of the names are AI spoken wrong
 
GOOD. Do it for subs. Fuck all those subtitle licences that prevent people from having what they need. I can almost never get subtitles in my language because i live in another countries. Unless it's original content wherw they own the subtitles.

And even if you just want the subtitles in your region you'd think that wouldnt be an issue? Wrong. Living in the german region of a lot of anime on netflix only has french subs. And it's not like ot even has german dubs.

You guys living in english speaking countries with english as your native language dont know the bullshit that subtitle licenses are.

And also, and this is very important, it's not like AI dubs for my language can be any worse than official ones. From words changing from one season to another, to people not knowing how to interpret the english you to my language which has formal and informal you. I'm sorry but umbridge doesnt call harry potter sir which is what it says in my languages sub, nor does tony stark talk to captain america through formal yous.

Imagine having to use a vpn for fucking subtitles. When it works because using a vpn does not guarantee that the content is in the country you want the subs from

English dubs always seem to have 1 character where the voice ruins the show for me. I would rather not read subtitles. I remember the original Trigun had a decent dub.

Someone out there in Youtube land has shared details as to WHY that yong yea was selected to be Kiryu. New marketing guy, wanted a youtube influencer with lots of followers. Not sure how legit it is.

Loved the dub for Yakuza 7. Could not play the dub with a boy playing a 45 year old dude.

It has already been implemented for subtitles a while ago. Crunchyroll has used them too, to the anger of their fans. The AI subtitles have language misinterpretations and mistranslations, most of them that an actual human who studied the field and culture would actually catch.

If they haven't implemented them yet in your favorite property or language, it's simply because they haven't gotten to it yet. But it is being used.

My hope was that since this was going to happen anyway, that they would simply AI-dub using the Japanese voice actors' voices, thus the words, acting, and inflections remain the same but only the language changes. That would have been a decently accepted outcome.

Oooo! The bolded is an experiment I'd love to hear. Voice an anime project in Japan, keep the grunts and screams from the original, but train the AI to capture the original voice sounds and acting, but speak the words in English instead. Pay the original voice actor's royalties for use of their voices. Heavy editing and modifications will still be needed for timing and mouth flaps, but I'd like to see it tried, even though people inevitably will be angry as it means no jobs for a foreign cast.

As for the discussion about English dubs, they've been very hit and miss for me. I remember loving the dub for a show called Norigami. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember thinking it sounded great and I'll always prefer a good/great dub over reading words on the bottom of the screen and missing some of the animation/action. For a bad dub example, I tried watching the Gundam SEED Freedom movie on Netflix yesterday and..... I had to stop a quarter of the way through. It's bad. I can't stand it. Some of the cast members have talent, but the audio engineering mixing sounded off, certain mouth flaps were not being matched (in ways that I believe they absolutely could be if this movie was given a serious effort), some casting choices were odd, and some English lines sounded stale/too literal. It came across as a rushed job. Has good moments, but the overall results was a poor and disappointing aural experience.

Inaccuracies happen a lot with official dubs so i dont care but that's not even really the point. The point is that i dont have the choice due to some licensing bullshit so it's not official vs AI, it's AI vs literally nothing.
 
Here in Mexico... They wanted to do the same thing. But the current government is looking into the case to protect the voices.

. Anyone who listens to the dubbing of any Mexican series or movie knows it's among the best in the world, even surpassing the original versions.

I only ever watch stuff in sub only these days but dub haters have always been weirdos.

Dudes who don't know any Japanese saying all English voice actors sound the same when there's dozens of Japanese VAs with zero range. lol.
 
I will simply not consume any Anime (or any other form of art) made with A.I., whether it's for the dub, sub, animation or any other aspect of its development.

Simple as that.

I encurage anymone to do the same, if you want to safe/protect art and human creativity.
 
Learn to read subtitles like you do with videogames.

Jap dub is so much better than english is not even fun.
