Do you have any recommendations on ambient soundtracks? I'm looking for something to listen to help me relax. I tend to perform better in midterms and exam when I listen to these type of music prior to writing. FYI, I like stuff from Moby but anything different would be nice. The soundtrack does not have to contain any vocals.

Any suggestions?

best. avatar. ever.

i'm guessing if you think moby is ambient you haven't heard the classics

eno's on land is _the_ seminal work. the rest of the ambient series is also quite good, most notably music for airports. another green world might qualify as ambient to you too. regardless, these records are the cornerstone of our modern world.

the other pillar of ambient is rdj aka aphex twin. selected ambient works II is one of the five greatest records ever made. SAW 1 is also ridiculously great. melodies from mars, analogue bubblebath 1 and 2, hangable auto bulb, etc. etc.

that's what i'm coming up with off the top of my head. tara jane o neil is someone more recent that i would classify as near-ambient, but her noise experiments and songs are more structured than true ambient (SAW 1 is heavily structured as well). i haven't really been following electronic as well as maybe i should, so i'm not sure what i could tell you about recent work in that...

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Try some stuff by The Orb... their older stuff was the seminal ambient music back in its day... UFOrb, The Orbs Adventure Beyond The Ultraworld and Orbus Terrarum are all good.

Brian Eno...why didn't i think of that. I liked his stuff from the 28 Days Later soundtrack. Thanks fart. I will try the other suggestions as soon as I can find them on soulseek.

I'll second the recommendations for Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II (holy CRAP that album is amazing) and Boards of Canada.

If you like Moby, then may I suggest a record by Moby under a different name? Check out Voodoo Child's The End Of Everything -- it's all layers of cheesy synths and the same drum machine on every track, but it IS beautiful and calming.

My favorite moody, ambient album of the year is A Strangely Isolated Place by Ulrich Schnauss. It's considerably denser music what you'd think of as "ambient," but I think you'd like it.

i've always through the orb was more structured than ambient, but yah, these are good records.
