Boss bought his daughter a Bamboo Pen & Touch a few weeks back. She's been using the programs that came bundled with it and some others she's found, for drawing, but he told me today that she's interested in doing animation and they wanted to know a good program for that.

Help me GAF, you're my only hope.

Hands down the best 2D animation program...EVER.

EDIT - Oh I assume you want something more casual.

Well just get the consumer version on the cheap. It's a bit complex at first but it destroys everything else I've used.

I'm using digicel flipbook studio -- I think the "lite" version is like $80, there's a 40% off Christmas sale atm though. (I won't even link to their website, it is hideous)

not familiar with anything else sorry.

Isn't that more tradition based animation? With the toon boom (flip boom) for kids you create simple rigs (adding bones) making it a lot more simpler, than your typical hand drawn stuff. I'll be honest I haven't used pencil-animation, but thanks to you I will now!

Yeah it is, but the question was about for use with a wacom tablet so I figured that's what he meant. I haven't actually used pencil in a couple of years but I remember it being quite well featured for a 'free' program.

^^looks pretty good for someone just getting started, don't know anything about it though.

For traditional hand-drawn, TVPaint is one of the best. It was used in My Dog Tulip. Plus I've used it, so I can answer some questions :)

However, it might be a little tough to navigate for a 13 year old, given that it took some time for me to figure it out. If she has Photoshop, some versions have animation tools in them. Not the best, but usable.

Um, I need advice on DRAWING software for my Bamboo Pen I just purchased.

I have Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS5. Which should I be using?

I'm pretty confortable with Photoshop, but have never even opened Illustrator.

Now that I've read the OP, this seems excessive...

My friends seem to like Flash a lot (see orfeu too), but you have to accept vector based drawing, which feels weird and the best looking footage seems to be doing shape fills for now. A couple others are tvpaint loyalists. It's better for a traditional animation look, contour line drawing. Haven't tried or seen too much toon boom, but what really matters is you making the program work. They'll all have their challenges.

Pencil on paper is the same way though, the challenge there is more steps to making a finished look - and kind of a guessing job as to what the final look may be until it's entirely composited, where Flash has it all there on the screen for you. Also, it's very difficult to do pencil on paper without a pencil test machine, but I think it's still the smoothest, best-looking animation. I'm kind of digging the flash animation without outlines though, and some other things people are doing with the program.

Haven't used CS5 before, but everyone uses Photoshop to draw for fun these days. No one uses Illustrator really, unless you were making company logos and such. There's a learning curve, but PS is a great program for drawing.
