Ubisoft Mainz have released a six-minute gameplay showcase trailer for Anno 117: Pax Romana.

For the first time in Anno, you step into the role of a character—a newly appointed governor, a position of power in the Roman Empire. Being a governor will allow you to experience Rome first-hand like never before, from awe-inspiring spectacles like the Naumachia in the Amphitheatre to the untamed Celtic wetlands of Albion.

On May 21 at 8:00 a.m. PT / 11:00 a.m. ET, the development team will also be streaming Anno 1117: Pax Romana live from the studio with game director Jan, art director Reiko, and community deliver Oliver. You will be able to watch it on Twitch.

Great timing, I hadn't thought about the Roman Empire in about three hours.

You know I had to be here. Best game of the year.

Now Kiss Adventure Time GIF

It's nice that military is confirmed but I hope it's actually implemented well... the Romans weren't known for their peaceful ways.

I hope they don't wall it behind the Ubisoft Launcher...
Ofc they will! :messenger_pensive:

I played Anno1800 just last year for over 100hrs+...and this looks exactly the same game, just different time age and diagonal building. Not sure if I am ready for this yet again.

What turned me off Anno 1800 was the DLC policy. They're imitating Paradox' business model at this point and I find that quite annoying.

I'm not into city builders but I am a sucker for the Roman empire. I might have to bite. In terms of pricing, are we looking at an 80€ game or are these games priced lower ?

Seems like a reskin for 1800 but with 90% cut content....which means buying day one would be idiotic considering how much stuff Anno 1800 received over the years.

Definitely getting this, but also definitely not getting it at release. These games needs a year or two of marinating and cooking before consumption IMO.

I played a bit of Anno 1800 and while it was clearly a good game it just didn't click.

On the other hand I play a ton of anything to do with Roman Empire so I can see getting this … couple years post release. Same rule I implemented with Paradox after Imperator and Vicky 3.

I didn't know they were making one on Rome. Looks good. Are the console versions of Anno any good? I don't want to deal with the Ubi PC launcher and I got a PS5 for free recently with an ISP contract.

there is just one game 1800, its a fairly smaller map than pc, has none of the expansions and is 30fps.
controller gameplay is pretty cumbersome too.

Day one for me, I have put more than 400 hours in 1800 and it was GLORIOUS. It's just the best Simulation/City Builder game ever IMO. It seems like they improved the battle gameplay a lot which was very.... uh succinct let's say.

Also visually Anno 1800 is still one of the best (if not the best) looking game of the genre so I don't think we should worry about that. Anyway I can't wait!

It's on Steam

So far it doesn't state that you need the Ubi Launcher so there is hope, but we know Ubi....

I dont know what it is, but Ubisoft Mainz just sounds funny.
Hope they open up a studio in Essen-Kray next. Or Ubisoft Gelsenkirchen.

Let me give you a glimmer of hope:

For the past 20 years it was Dirk Riegert who lead the gameplay design of Anno, making 117 the first Anno in decades to have a different game director with Manuel Reinher. What's interesting about Manuel is that he has been an artist for the past 20 years, and never officially designed gameplay, making 117 his maiden voyage into game design, which is probably why he wants to play it safe with 117 to earn management's trust and signal to his team that he honors the legacy of Dirk (so as not to disgruntle those who are close friends with Dirk) and I suspect we will see at least some departures in gameplay philosophy with 117, because Manuel will want to leave his mark a little, and then drastically more changes in the next Anno, because Manuel will want to carve out a legacy of his own and not stand in Dirk's shadow forever.

Thanks, thats interesting. Didnt know that. Dont get me wrong. Anno1800 is really a great game and with all the DLC's it was fckn HUUUGE! (maybe even too huge in the end) So its just the correct move I guess to go develop from the awesome 1800 foundation and just change slight things according player feedback.

Any footage of ground combat? Will there be ground combat?
I've seen some small bits of footage where soldiers were moving around in a formation. The question will be whether they can make military and combat feel fun this time around.
