In a now deleted post on the Gran Turismo subreddit, a verified developer of Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo 7) says PDI and Sony doesn't listen, despite developers actually wanting to address what gamers want

The developer then quickly deleted his Reddit profile along with all of his posts

One of his last responses was this one:

The fact the responses under his posts were overwhelmingly positive and constructive didn't really matter in the end

IMHO quite a sad state of affairs when as a game developer you can't be open to the most positive feedback possible without fearing for your job

A lot of employees who are low-mid level don't see the full picture and they might perceive (especially when their opinions are augmented by a community) that they and the community aren't being listened to, but the reality is that projects the size of Gran Turismo have a ton of moving parts and massive roadmaps.

The idea that you can just take an idea from the community and implement it sounds great on the surface but when you look at what it would take to implement specific ideas, you begin to realize that it might not be so simple.

Are they changes that would go into the current game or GT8? Do the ideas unravel ideas that are already deep in development? Does someone putting forward an idea have consensus from the rest of the community that said idea is a great idea?

Ultimately, this is the nature of being immature and posting publicly was also immature. This guy is a technical artist, he's as low level as it gets. He was an intern in 2019. He's been at Polyphony a while (2019), but Gran Turismo has been around since 1997...

Well this is how PD has always operated. Very old school Japanese way of handling game development. I suppose now Gran Turismo is becoming more and more like a live service title, they are going to have to engage with community at some point, to some degree. But I think they will avoid this as much as they can.

Did anyone had any doubt after the remaster of horizon and dg and the push for gaas?
Have you not seen the Sony defence force on GAF lately? This was all they were yappin about on every argument, how Sony isn't making this or that because they actually let their devs decide what to make...because ofc a Days Gone remaster and a cancelled gaas project was all Bend wanted to make in 6 years...
Seems that was a load of horseshit afterall but let us pretend to be shocked

I do be looking forward to seeing the mental gymnastics of some members here on trying to spin this around.

They already have though. Some of the biggest issues the community has had with the series over the years have already been addressed (sounds, AI, livery editor). GT planet, the most popular online GT community, has votes with requests about future content and some of the most popular cars and tracks there have indeed been released in the past few years. They are definitely listening, which is why some specific examples in the OP about what the developer actually means would have been nice. Otherwise it sounds like a nothingburger. It's not like the community can always agree on things or that every single thing each person might want is a good idea or even feasible to include.

Company doesn't like employee making them looking bad on the internet... Shocking I tell ya, shocking.

Where were you guys when Mr "I wanted pronouns in my game to troll Elon" was shooting his mouth off?

Ironically, this is actually worse.

"Listen to the community" is just code for "Listen to the 32 autistic people who don't understand game development".

The community is always wrong.

I read online a while back that they ignore these community notes entirely and just focus on what they want to do within budgets/time etc. I mean have they ever publicly acknowledged these communities votes at all? Not being snarky, genuinely curious.

Then I'll call the police and have they/him/her prosecuted for breaking and entering?
But how would we know they weren't yours if he didn't get caught? He could have put flags anywhere for all we know. Chills the blood just to think about it.

I can already see the sdf saying that it's just a disgruntled dev screaming at clouds and that ps5 is more successful than ever etc.

Of course...how could we forget the PS5 is selling like hotcakes?! What more reason do we even need to actually enjoy our console other than knowing it's making Sony big money. Silly me.

There have been many interviews over the years and I do remember in at least one of them Kaz mentioning something along the lines of "we're listening" but I could not find it right now. It'd be hard to believe they're just randomly getting all these cars right or correcting the bugs reported in the corresponding thread, but of course one can never be 100% sure. Still, if you have the time here's an interesting thread from within GTP about what the community believes.

There's also this relatively recent interview from Kaz where he specifically talks about how his vision sometimes is different than the fans and how GT7 was his answer to the criticism Sport got. You generally don't do that without listening.

Personally I'm convinced they are listening, but to what extend and how much they're willing to change/add based on feedback we'll never know. Listening too closely to the fans can often be a double-edged sword.

Look at all the trolls in the comments using this as a way to attack sony...

No specific thing mentioned that PD or Sony isn't listening to... and is it PD or Sony? Who isn't listening? If you don't know, then you don't know who isn't listening... or that they aren't listening.

One of the dumbest threads I've seen in a while.

Like Skifi28 Skifi28 mentions, Kaz has shown he's willing to listen to feedback, and Polyphony appears to have listed to some feedback. But the thing that makes GT great is also its biggest weakness. It is ultimately 1 man's vision. And he's clearly a subject matter expert not just in the game, but in the thing the game is simulating, so his voice carries a lot of weight.

Lol, this is more like grasping for straws for doing the usual Sony bitching (as if we hadn't had 81728218721 of these threads already) for the most nothingburger shit out there. LANDSCAPE TECHNICAL ARTIST HAS SOMETHING TO SAY.
I think Sony not giving a rats ass about the Community and Developers (especially the japanese ones) has become quite evident over the past couple years. Nice to see a developer actually confirming it.

He isn't anonymous.

If this is true, then blame the PS California head quarters and previous leadership of Ryan and Hulst.
He's literally talking about Polyphony Digital itself, lmao.

Companies won't go to read and consider every single reddit post, but they get and use a lot of player feedback:
  • Sales
  • Tons of internal metrics regarding many topics like game usage (things like favorite game modes, or in this case cars, etc)
  • Market research comparing against previous entries, direct competition or reference games
  • Internal mock reviews
  • Gaming press reviews
  • Playtesting
  • Focus testing
  • Player research
  • General Social Media / community monitoring
They get all this as support data that may help take some decisions combined obviously with the dev team's own ideas and needs.

And well, everyone has a different personal opinion. It's impossible to make everyone happy: independently of whatever they do, some people will like it and other ones will dislike it.
