Come on John tv and Dcharlie.... since the secret chinese mafia gamestore has taken you into their hideout and sold you illicit copies of Another Code...

I DEMAND IMPRESSIONS!

I got bombed out by their Yak guy last time, but Jonnyram says that the PSP stuff comes in a little later... (i was trying to get Popolocrois at the time)

DS stuff is tuesday i think.
i'll pick this up tomorrow - if i survive yet another Faf drinking session! ;)

If not, Wednesday - you'll probably have it by then!
i'll get Need for Speed then as well for PSP and everyone can laugh at my idiocy! :D

Nintendo games on Mondays, everything else on Wednesdays. I had that explained to me by two different fellows on two different occasions. Hence, I bought Another Code and Starfox today :D They even have discounted prices and a loyalty card. He said "No receipts for early stuff," though, with a wry grin on his face.

I started it tonight but I really didn't have much time to play. There's a lot of text, and I only understand about half of it, so I'm not sure how far I can go. So far it's been fairly easy but I imagine I might be missing small bits here and there.

Here's what I've got so far: Ashley's mother was shot dead when she was only two years old; her father went missing, then she received a letter from him inviting her to this strange island, along with a Nintendo DS (OK, it's not a DS in the game, but it's the exact same shape and design and everything -- it's this mini-computer that only she can use because of some kinda biotechnology or whatever). Anyway, she goes to the island, but her father's not there to meet her like he said he would be, so her friend Jessica goes off to look for him while she waits behind. ...And that's where I'm at. Very pretty graphics and nice sound; the 2D image on the top screen changes depending on what direction you're facing as you walk around the bottom, which is a nice touch, but really that's about all I've seen so far. Lots of talking and looking at different facial expressions, basically.

Seems intriguing though. If Jonny or anyone else has anything to add, please do!

Well they are just publishing it.

Nice john, thanks, sounds great so far actually. So brutal though, for the mom anywho. :(

From what I can tell, the gameplay revolves around puzzles. It's a very story-centric game as most point-and-click adventure games tend to be.

nice. had no idea it was a point and click adventure game.

Finished the first chapter this morning - it runs in at about 90 minutes.
As John said, it's basically a point and click adventure with nice 2D graphics on the top screen and 3D map on the bottom screen, which changes to interactive elements when you examine things or have to solve a puzzle. Moving around with the touch screen is painless, Ashley stays in the centre and when you touch a point around her she walks in that direction.

Puzzles have been mixed so far... sometimes they're really obvious and other times they're a little more tricky. Basically at the start, there is a brick wall where you find your progress abruptly coming to a stop, but with some lateral thinking you can get around it
(duh, that's a major hint for the second puzzle)
. There's also a couple of frustrating moments where you can see the puzzle that needs to be solved and you saw an item that is needed for the puzzle, but you can't pick up that item until you actually attempt to solve the puzzle and fail. I guess this prevents you from picking up a bunch of items you don't have a use for, but it's still frustrating, slightly.

The music is pretty ambient. It's similar to the kind of "tunes" you would here in old suspense TV series. It suits the game really well.

The story is building up nicely so far. John's told the start of it and to go further into it would remove any point in other people playing the game, so I won't spoil it for anyone. Simply, the title of the first chapter is "Meeting D" and that is what you must do.

I just realized you can use the d-pad to control Ashley and the cursor as well, if you like. I much prefer controlling her with the d-pad and using the stylus for cursor activity... makes the game easier to control IMO.

Liking it a lot so far. The story is very interesting so far. I hope they can keep it up throughout.

Nice impressions, good to see you two can be counted on for early impressions thanks to a somewhat shady store. :D

One question though Jonny, from where you are in the game would you say the story is more grounded in reality or does it have sci-fi leanings? It might be too early to tell but John did mention biotechnology, so I'm wondering since so little is actually known about the real story. Thanks again for the impressions! :D

Hrm. If you don't mind minor spoilers, I can provide some insight:

Aside from the biotechnology bit with the DAS (Dual Another System; the thing that looks like a DS and responds to Ashley's biowaves), it's been mostly grounded in reality so far. There's a bit of paranormal activity going on...but I haven't seen anything else really sci-fi related. Seems like a very interesting, suspenseful story so far. I'm just hoping it doesn't explode into some futuristic alien tentacle attack saga near the end like most otherwise-decent Japanese stories tend to do, because that would be a shame.

Another nice thing... I was not particularly happy with the sleeve, until I discovered that the yellow band (that is meant to imitate a paperback book) can be folded back to reveal a normal sleeve. Very handy :)

Ah! Hallelujah! I was wondering WTF they went with such an ugly-ass package like that. This is wonderful -- thanks!

And here it is. Much better!

What's up with the subtitle? Futatsu no kioku is two memories, no?

If anything this is a lot like Detective Club 3. Story wise.

That game had cross-dressers, murders, ghosts, pimps, you name. Developed by Nintendo.

I think the story is supposed to explain that ;P
I'm well into chapter two now and it's loooong. I'm past 4 hours total. Some nice puzzles and deep storytelling are keeping this lengthy.

!!joy!!

when does this game come out i nthe US?? i cant wait.

I am looking forward to this game, hope the ENG version isn't to far behind.

john tv and Jonnyram, thanks for the impressions, keep em coming.

Midway through chapter 4, five hours on the clock, and some loose ends are finally being tied up, but I have a feeling that the game is just getting started. The reason for me being at the island is still unexplained, but feels like it will become clear imminently. The game's really grabbed me. I'm always trapped with the "just 5 more minutes" feeling.

Thanks for the impressions JR, added to my must buy list. Time for me to bail out of the topic dont want to read too many spoilers. :)

Just opened it up and went through the 1st chapter. As a huge huge fan of point & click adventure games (it's why I moved to Jrpgs as they are the closest in feel to that now dead genre) I think Another Code is a little weak. Then again I have pretty high standards in adventure games and even The Longest Journey felt average to me.

Things I like:
--Use of the 2 screens in story presentation
--Art
--Music

Things I don't like:
--lack of interactivity. Ok so there's only a new 1st person screen every new 1 screen block section. That's fine but at least give lots of objects to search. I mean I feel like I'm playing an adventure game where I can only search 1-2 glowing "SEARCH ME" objects per screen. I dunno, I feel really restricted.
--puzzles in chapter 1 totally sucked. No brain power required and the answers or needed objects were usually right next to the puzzle. Lack of backtracking is good, but c'mon give me some logic puzzles that make me think.
--story/writing. It's not bad, but it really feels like a kids adventure book that I'd read when I was 10-13. Not feeling a real hook yet and the dialogue is pretty weak. Well actually maybe the dialogue is 'realistic' because the 13 year old lead girl is pretty dumb which annoys me. But then again 13 year olds aren't supposed to have the same thinking power as I do.
--Touch screen implementation is AWFUL. The turning/pushing/throwing puzzles did a terrible job at sensing the stylus and I ended up just using my thumb as it was taking forever to do simple things like MOVE A BLOCK with the stylus :\

So that's pretty harsh but I said I was gonna be harsh. Anyhow I'm hoping it get sucked into it like Johnnyram but right now it's just a slightly better than average adventure game.

Puzzles get harder later, but for a seasoned point'n'clicker like yourself, it might not be that hard at all. I found myself stuck at one point in chapter 4 where I was just looking at stuff the wrong way XD and then in chapter 5 when I didn't consider backtracking as far as I should. Worst part was chapter 1 when I couldn't figure out how to move that rock though! :lol

This is actually part of the appeal. I'm not fluent in Japanese by any means, so to play a game that I actually fully understand is really a plus for me. It also makes me feel somewhat younger, as the character is very believable.

Yep, the move the block puzzle really messed with me. There's another one later that I can't figure out too. I'm not sure whether it's optional or not, and I think I have the right item to do it, but when I get into the "touch mode" nothing I do makes a difference, so maybe I have to use my thumb rather than the pen.

I just finished the game at lunchtime.
You can't save for the whole of the last segment so I'm guessing there is more than one possible ending. There were a crap load of choices in that time, so many potential ways for the story to alter, I guess. I'll try tonight and see what happens. Total play time was about 8 hours.

No really huge twists in the game, nothing too out there, although the whole concept of Another is kind of science fiction (not as in aliens and space, but it is science-based and fictional...) After the 5th chapter, there was nothing that taxed my brain too much. Overall a nice little adventure game. I've not played one for a while, but this gives the genre some hope of a bright future on the DS, I think.
