Silent Death

lemme get one or two licks
Ok for the last 4 days I have been unable to get my email through outlook express. When ever I try I get a message that says that my connection has been inactive for 60 and ask if I would like to wait or cancel. I assumed it was a problem with the ISP as I had not changed anything on my computer. I waited assuming they would fix it. Today I decided to call customer support. They had me delete and reset up my email account then send me a message which I never got. I checked my email online and all my messages were there from the last few days. While the lady put me on hold for tier 2 support I decided to disable Norton Internet Security and see if I could get my mail. Low and behold I was able to DL it.

After an hour of searching Symantec’s tech support data base I can't find a cause or cure for being able to DL my email without turning of security. Has anyone else had this happen to them or can anyone point me in the direction of a fix for this. No I will not uninstall Norton as I'm sure so of you will suggest.

PS Before I discovered that internet security was the problem I noticed as of yesterday that my computer when starting up and shutting down lagged a whole lot. It used to boot up within 20 seconds and shutdown in about the same time. Now it literally takes 10 minutes to shut down and 5 to boot. As I was saying I was thinking that this could also be a symptom of the same problem that was causing me to be unable to DL my email, before I discovered it was due to internet security. Does anyone know what might be causing this to happen as well?

reinstall norton internet security maybe?

as for long startup/shut down, maybe check what programs you have running on startup.

you can also go to (depending on OS) control panel -> admin tools -> event viewer and check the logs there.

Sometimes if your computer is running into errors it will record them in those logs but not actaulyl inform you via a popup or something obvious like that.

edit: any chance you have your hard drive so full/so fragmented it could be causing problems?

I don't know the solution to your problem, I'm just trying to throw somethings that have a random chance of helping.

In addition to slayn suggestions:

I'd run spy scan and anti virus. Then I'd check my firewall and makesure it isn't blocking mail.
