Just wondering if anyone here recommends it. I have an Apple TV 3 currently and the wifi is temperamental at best. I don't mind using the ethernet, but I lost the remote recently and now it becomes a pain in the ass if I move it around because the iOS app won't work if I'm not always connected to wifi on the Apple TV.
Has anyone upgraded from 3 to 4? Is it a worthwhile upgrade? It's only $130 at Walmart and I'm going to give my mom my old one since she doesn't have any kind of Netflix device for her TV.
The newest roku is another option but I'm pretty much against fire tv. My friend has the fire tv stick and it's slow af

Apple TV imo is the best streaming box experience. Super smooth and nice UI.

Has 3 significant drawbacks, though.

1. No Amazon Prime
2. No PSVUE
3. No 4K

If you're ok having a box that does not support those 3, it comes highly recommended.

What do you use it for? Need more info on that regard.

Do you rent or buy a ton of shit directly on iTunes or is it more of a conduit for you to use streaming apps from?

If you're already in the Apple system and are fine with it, then yeah I'd recommend it. General UI design improvements and snappiness to performance made the upgrade more than worthwhile for me.

It's nice. Siri on remote is meh and the new remote 'touchpad' is... i liked the old better. Having an app store is great for most of my apps I use have dedicated apps on the apple tv.

Better than airplaying from the phone/ipad at least. Don't know if the wifi receiver is better than the 3 though.

Worth it imo for my needs.

I use streaming apps. AirVideo HD is one of my most used Apple TV apps and I figure TVOS allows for native media centers to run on the box now.
Is Prime Video still supported via AirPlay? I used to just AirPlay it from my iPad without an issue

For the services it has, the streaming is unmatched. Starts instantly and buffers to 1080p in a few seconds or faster.

I have the Apple TV 4, the Roku 4 and the Amazon Fire Gaming edition.

The Roku 4 is the better all around device imo as it does support all the Prime stuff, but also does 4k (if you have one of those).

The Apple TV 4 is basically an exclusive iTunes box for us now, but is great for everything else as well (except Prime), and the streaming quality and speed is great.

So, if you're not a big Prime user or 4k owner, the Apple box is fantastic. If you do use Prime or have a 4k tv, I'd recommend the Roku 4.

Can't go wrong with either, but nothing is an all-in-one solution.

Oddly enough I find I use the Siri dictation a lot more than I thought I would. It's really quite good for the YouTube and Netflix searches. The Apple Music integration is also well done and if you have a decent iTunes library it's a lot better than the older Apple TVs.

I've had a 3 and a 4. The 4 is far better.

I had issues with the ATV 3 where it would work with streaming purchases from Apple on 5GHzm but not see my iTunes Library on my computer, but setting to 2.4GHz meant the library was great but streaming purchases from apple was out. Almost every other issue I had was generally solved by just quitting and reopening itunes on the computer.

The ATV fixed the issue I had above.

The 4 also allows you to flick between itunes accounts really quickly (I have three accounts for UK, US and Australia and I can swap between the three in a few clicks and be switched to that store immediately. would be nice if iOS and Mac OS adopted this).

The character input using the touch pad works much better than I expected.

Siri is great for searching for stuff on things like Netflix or Now TV (Sky UK's version of HBO Now)

never tried a game but I'm guessing that's dead and buried. I'm glad I stuck with the 32GB version

no amazon prime sucks but that's amazon. I have a Bluray player that has an app for that, or for some reason, the ipad will do it.

I recommend the fuck out of it, cause I use mine to its full potential, and I'm deep in the Apple ecosystem. Use it for Plex streaming, Air Playing stuff from Macbook/iPhone/iPad, and also use a ton of 3rd apps on it such as news, gaming, livestreaming, etc. I cancelled my cable cause of that box. Long term, I don't see any other box having a more robust ecosystem or better quality apps. I love the interface, the speed, and the fact that I can control it with the remote or phone, as well as Siri. If they come out with a 4K capable version this fall, I will upgrade.

Also, the ATV4 IS a massive upgrade over the 3 in every aspect, not least of which is that it supports the appstore.

I had a Roku 4 for a couple days. The UI is horrible, PSVUE is a joke and it feels like a cheap product overall. Plus, you will hear a fan running. It is clearly the inferior product.

I have an Apple TV 2, 3, and 4, plus an Amazon Firestick. Really if you have a 3 I wouldn't upgrade unless you had to. Just buy a new remote. While yes the 4 is better, it is not another $130 better. Maybe once Apple does their live steaming service it would be worth the upgrade. Also I hate the Firestick too, but I paid like $19 for it and it does Prime on my non-gaming TV.

I probably wouldn't upgrade to a 4. The App Store hasn't really delivered anything substantial to the platform.

Remember if all you do is use it to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime you might be better off saving the cash and using an existing console you already own.

Stuff like HBO Go, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon ect... Might already be better on a current console you already own vs your Apple TV 3 with no need to buy a new device.

I wouldn't be surprised to see its official MSRP cut to $99 in a month, so you might as well wait a little while. It'll be a lot better with the tvOS revision, too.

I've had a Roku 4 since they launched and I can't say I've ever heard its fan. And while some apps have UI problems (hard to blame that on Roku) I'd say overall the UI is fine. The Amazon app even got a recent update that makes it look just like the FireTV version.

It's easily my most used device.

Lack of Prime is a deal breaker.

I would go with the Roku Stick 3600R.

I would only recommend the Apple TV 4 to someone who's heavily invested in the iTunes ecosystem.

In all honesty, the Prime thing isn't much of a deal breaker if you have an Iphone or ipad as you can just airplay it to the apple tv.

It's really good, I got it on a deal as well and don't regret it whatsoever. Rarely have any issues and the app selection is great other than what people mentioned above. For Amazon, you can just airplay from your phone (assuming you have an iPad).

All of you that want Prime Video should remember you probably already have access on your current console.

Airplaying is much less convenient than a local app. It's hardly comparable. Airplay is a band-aid solution at best.

And if you have a device that can play Prime, then you have a device that can play Netflix and Hulu too, in which case you probably don't need a streaming device. Certainly not the Apple TV 4.

Prime is the second-best streaming service out there. It lets you add-on additional services at a discount (Showtime). The lack of Prime is a major hurdle.

Plus the Roku lets you buy/rent movies from alternative storefronts, so you can shop around and take advantage of better deals/quality from Vudu, Google Play, etc.

That's what I do on my 3 on the rare occasion I use prime video. It also allows multitasking, so you can do other shit on your phone while it air plays, some apps don't even allow that for some reason.

I have an Xbox one that can be used to stream, but I literally never use it. The power supply makes a loud noise even if the system is in stand by so I just leave it unplugged except on the rare occasion I play a game on it
