Any word on Chaos Field?

According to GameSpot Chaos Field came out today. Anybody pick this up? Or out of our resident cast of journalists has anybody reviewed this?

Totally getting this, but won't be able to play it until finals end. If my understanding is correct, its been improved over the Dreamcast version, a port that saw okay-ish reviews. The Cube zealots at Gamefaqs aren't impressed (nothing like Ikaruga, they decry, in badly spelt english), but the hardcore crowd that bought it today seem to like it.

Shooter fans should be satisfied, everyone else should be wary. It might be worth getting just in terms of collectibility, I'm pretty sure this is going to tank hard. In any event, your money could be spent in worse ways then supporting a fledgling developer/publisher and a regrettably infrequently seen genre.

My friend has it on Dreamcast. We weren't really impressed. It's true that it doesn't hold up in the inevitable comparison to Ikaruga, but what does?
But the game isn't bad--by all means, pick it up. It's worth it. The windshield-wipery weapon (that's the official name) is cool.
The only word of warning I'd put forth is this: your ship is HUGE. And don't expect a one-pixel hitbox like Treasure uses. If anything, your hitbox is even bigger than the ship. It makes for a tough game (although I'm no expert shooter).

Getting my ass handed to me in this game. Talk about bullet hell.

Definitely nothing like Ikaruga, although it kind of has a similar look in spots (3D backdrops and enemies, 2D gameplay).

I like how it borrows a little from many older shmups. You've got your standard weapon, a sword weapon that erases shots, a lock-on weapon that's a total rip from RayStorm/RayCrisis, and the ability to toggle Order vs. Chaos. In Chaos mode, your bullets are more powerful and your specials are more elaborate, but the enemy's shots are also faster and more plentiful. Also, your homing weapon locks onto the enemy's weakpoints in Order mode, but it locks onto bullets in Chaos mode. The whole game is very strategic in that evading the constant swarm of bullets requires smart use of each weapon (not to mention a few timely swap between Order/Chaos to take advantage of the very brief invincibility).

Still, the backdrops and enemies aren't all that impressive (the graphics are sharp, but the designs are bland). So, even though the game is merely 5 levels and consists entirely of boss battles, I'm already getting a bit bored.

Ah well, I guess it was worth $30. If only to support Milestone, the developer, which is made up of old Compile employees. BTW, the US version is actually the "Expanded" version, which includes the extra so-called Original mode. Original mode throws a few smaller enemies in between the boss fights, which can lead to higher scores... that's aboot it.

Fun little shooter, if not a classic. Worth the thirty bucks only to support further domestic releases like this.

...besides, what the fuck else are we going to use our Gamecubes for, barring Path of Radiance?

I thought it was horrible, with akward gameplay (and I like shmups). Only redeeming factor for me was I really like the soundtrack, but I am so so glad I did not buy it.

Wait, a US release?

Yes indeed.. there's also an upgraded PS2 version which we're not getting for some reason. :/

I have some Estarland credit I don't know how to spend, so I'm going to order this.

Yeah, I saw the reviews.. but IGN gave Raiden Project a 6.0 as well, and they gave Viewpoint a 2.0 - I liked both of those, so I'm hopeful that I'll probably enjoy this.

If it's helpful at all, I hated Chaos Field, loved Raiden Project, and liked Viewpoint (would have loved it but I hate how it controls with the camera angle). You might be interested in piocking the game up though just because I imagine it'll be rare.

I'm pretty spent with it as well. It's... okay... but, like damn near everyone has said, also rather formulaic and bland. It's style of bullet hell is so "ehh."

I've already played a few games of Ikaruga since, and enjoyed that much more with regard to glitz and design...

Heck, besides Ikaruga, I've got games like Mars Matrix, Giga Wing, RayCrisis, Castle Shikigami 2, and all sorts of Gunbirds and Strikers 1945's on my shelf... they're all far superior to Chaos Field.

Save the $30. It's more a "rent" or "buy for pennies."

(I'm sure some real shmup diehards will chime in with comments about games like Homura, Ibara, and Raiden III too)

i've imported 2 good japanese shooters...chaos field is not one of them. i wanted to like it, but ikaruga and shikigami no shiro 2 are just more polished and fun gc shooters.

From what I read I think it's just CF Expanded, same as the GC one. I'd be willing to bet it'll be like PS2 Psyvariar 2 and have monstrous load times as well. Seriously, on the list of JPS2 shooters that should be distributed worldwide, only titles like XIIStag or Choaniki would be under this.

The reason why nobody's talking about this now is because
a) The DC version has been out for the past half of a year and
b) it's not that good

The "Expanded" mode of the game just puts a handful of small ships before each of the normal stages (all of which are boss encounters) and remixes the music a bit. Other than that and a few more enemy bullets, it's exactly the same as normal.

I don't exactly regret buying the game but I can already tell I won't be playing it much into the future.

I had fun with this for a while. I worked my first stage combo with Ifumi up to 2000 hits or so, then got stumped trying to combo the second stage and lost interest, for now anyway. A stage select/practice mode would've helped some there.

Pretty mediocre game, though worth the $30 to me personally, just to have it around.

I got it today and I've been playing it for an hour. It looks and sounds OK, but I'm just not having fun. It's all kind of subdued and dispirited, like they were going for the kind of cool elegance Ikaruga displayed but instead wound up with just plain boring.

I'm going to keep playing it for today, because I haven't quite figured out what everything on-screen is or what all my options for combat are, and I'd at least like to fully understand the game and know if completing it is feasible before I put it back on the shelf and never play it again.

The title screen does indeed say Chaos Field Expanded. Why they didn't use that cool logo on the box is beyond me - the art could hardly be any more generic. It's indistinguishable from about a dozen other games, especially since the name isn't very exciting either.
