Of course it's got no major compagnies or artists as of yet (maybe even it never will), but it's done by the ex-president of MP3.com and it's quite possibly the greatest startup in a long while for people like me who like to buy music legally, but hate copyright restrictions.

It's a shame that the songs are in 192 CBR MP3 (and not proper VBR, unlike emusic.com), but I guess it's because they really want their music to be playable everywhere, which is a nice tradeoff, as much as I like VBR MP3 done with LAME for example.

Read about this...forgot about it until your post.

I used to have my music on his mp3.com before it was bought out...made nearly $2000 Cdn just for having my music sitting there...I think I might go for this (as an artist uploading tracks there). As far as buying music goes...I would if it had music I'd be interested in.

Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for a site like this (although not very hard I guess) and failed on my latest attempt. All I could find was either free downloads or mainstream record company stuff.

I'll use it as both a consumer and an artist.

The record companies give you promotion in return for taking 90% of your earnings (or potential earnings that you lose due to their policies.) It's not like they take all your money for absolutely nothing otherwise nobody would sign with them.

It'd be tough to get noticed on that site. Lots of people will react the same way you did to the catalogue. Doesn't seem like the majors would be too interested in putting their artists on a site like that to begin with.

Still, $6 a CD instead of $0.25 means you only need 1/24th of the customers you'd get otherwise. You could really make a killing in the music industry if you're a great band and somehow managed to get noticed by a lot of people, and then sent them to that site. That $6 is insanely good compared to the shitty royalties you get otherwise.
