Halifax, Nova Scotia?

It seems more and more likely that I'll be going to Dalhousie university next year, located within this well reputed port city. Has anyone been? And if so, is it rather pleasant? "Rather pleasant" seems the appropriate way to describe it from what I've heard.

P.S. oh man I fuckin love lox. Lox kingdom here I come.

I think Memles is from Halifax, but I could be wrong.

I feel recognized.

Yes...I'll be heading back to Halifax on Monday. I went away for school...take from that what you will.

Halifax is more or less the kind of city that is "kind of pleasant". Some things to note, though.

1. Watch out for Swarmings

They're all the rage downtown now; groups of young teens surround old people and beat them up and steal things. It's the most insane concept I've ever heard, because they're making it sound like a crime wave...and anywhere else it would be a regular occurence.

2. Dalhousie University is my Mortal Enemy

If I sound a little bitter, it has something to do with offering me way too much money and making me, for even a second, consider taking it. I did not want to stay home to go to school, and Dal and I have issues.

3. Be prepared to know who Sidney Crosby is.

And if you see him on the street, punch him. He'll get the joke, trust me.

It is a very nice, relatively small city. A fair bit of culture, a whole shitload of commercialization once you get out of downtown, and a generally nice atmosphere. Just...don't touch the Harbour water. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Are the extent of your issues with Dal the fact that it would keep you in Halifax, or does it run deeper?

Is there viable public transportation?

Other than "swarming", not much crime?

1. I only applied to the school to get a lot of scholarship money to use as leverage to do to the school I wanted to. They gave me the money...and then I got dick all from this school. Which, of course, pissed me off. So, I blamed Dal. And yeah...didn't want to stay in Hali. Bad idea.Is this undergraduate or doctorate work, btw?

2. There is a fairly expansive bus service that is really quite efficient. I live out in the burbs, but I have a friend who is further into Halifax and he uses the buses to get just about everywhere. It is definitely a viable option to take the buses everywhere really important in the HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality)

3. If there's a murder, it's on the front page of the paper. I think there is like 3-5 per year. There is seriously very, very little crime in Halifax. Just stay out of Spryfield and you'll do alright.

Satellite View - Downtown Halifax

Check this out...the pictures were taken at a crappy time of year (The Burbs shots are much nicer) but you get the idea. You can see the Citadel, the bridges, the waterfront, etc. from there.
