On computers especially, any status bar or indicator that's even remotely quick and visual is like eye-crack to me. I can't look away, even very plain progress bars, if they're fast enough, will fix my attention on them until they are done.
But the big displays like from defraggers or virus scanners are truly hypnotic. I always run defraggers while I'm on the comp instead of while I sleep because there's just something so satisfying about watching those damn blocks move around. It's the same with those Norton scans that have detailed checklists that go by quickly, and all the sublists show you the folder/file and you can watch the percentages go. I actually get a mild sense of contentment, especially when I could feel my computer being slow or gummed up but as I get to watch the scan I can imagine the improved performance. Yes, I know how crazy that sounds... but I suspect I'm not the only one. :lol
Look not into the abyss! Well, it's not moving so no real danger.![Wink ;) ;)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
