To each his suff'rings: all are men,
Condemn'd alike to groan;
The tender for another's pain,
Th' unfeeling for his own.

-Gray, Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College

i need this life
just like i need illuminous strides

It's kind of long but here's the foreword to George Carlin's book Brain Droppings:

I am happy to tell you there is very little in this world that i believe in. Listening to these people who comment on political, social, and cultural issues, i notice most of their material reflects an underlying belief that somehow things were better one and that with just a little effort we could set them right again. They're looking for solutions, and rooting for particular results, and i think that necessarily limits the tone and substance of what they say. They're talented and funny people, but they're nothing more than cheerleaders in a specific, wished-for outcome.
I dont feel so confined. I frankly dont give a fuck how it all turns out in this country. Or anywhere else for that matter. I think the human game was up a long time ago (when the high priests and traders took over) and now we're just playing out the string. And that is, of course, precisely what i find so amusing: the slow circling of the drain by a once promising species, and the sappy, ever-more-desperate belief in this country that there is actually some sort of "American Dream" which has merely been misplaced. The decay and the disintegration of this culture is astonishingly amusing if you are emotionally detached from it. I have always viewed it from a safe distance, knowing that i dont belong: it doesnt unclude me, and it never has. No matter how you define it, I do not identify with the local group. Planet, species, race, nation, state, religion, party, union, club, association, neighborhood improvement committee; i have no interest in any of it. I love and treasure the individuals as i meet them, I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to. So if you ever hear me say something that sounds like advocacy of a particular political point of view, please reject the notion. My interest in "issues" is merely to point out how badly we are doing, not to suggest a way we might do better. Dont confuse me with those who cling onto hope. I enjoy describing how things are, i have no interest in how they "ought to be." And i have certainly no interest in fixing them. I sincerely believe that if you think there is a solution, you are a part of the problem. My motto: Fuck Hope!
P.S. Lest you wonder, personally, i am a joyful individual with a close and loving family and group of friends. I am a personal optomist, but skeptic about all else. What may sound to some like anger is really nothing more than sympathetic contempt. I view my species witha combination of wonder and pity, and i root for its destruction. And please, dont confuse my point of view with cynicism; the real cynics are the ones who tell you everything's gonna be alright. Oh yeah, and by the way, if by some chance you folks do manage to straighten things out and make everything better, i still dont wish to be included

No problem...it's always been a favorite of mine.

Also, if you like that, you might want to consider picking up the whole book. There is a lot of funny/enlightening material in it. It's been out for a few years so the paperback version is probably available fairly cheap.

Cause life is a game that no one wins,
But you deserve a headstart the way your life's goin',
So throw in the towel cause your life ain't shit,
No take that towel and hang yourself with it,
Life's short and hard like a body building elf,
So save the planet and kill yourself,
If you're feeling down and out with what your life's all about,
Lift your head up high and blow your brains out.

'Life is a swirling, sucking eddy of despair punctuated only by brief moments of false hope.'

(I cannot recall who said this, but I believe it was actually a famous philosopher.)

"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."

edit: Quote from instruction booklet that I keep losing:
a) Alternative Boot Method 1

1. Switch on your GameCube without any disc loaded. You will see the GameCube's amin options screen.
2. Now insert your Action Replay disc and close the lid - your Action Replay disc will begin to load, but it will not run.
3. Wait until the Action Replay icon appears on screen - you can then remove the Action Replay disc and replace it with your game disc.
4. Close the lid of your Gamecube, and the game will load automatically

b) Alternative Boot Method 2 (for problems with screen)

After choosing the FreeLoader feature inthe conventional way, press the Y button on your controller. This will display 3 Region flags on screen; European, American, and Japanese. Use LEFT and RIGHT on your controler to highlight the *region appropriate to the game you intend to play* and press A. ... You will see a small flag appear in the top left of the screen indicating which region you have selected. Now when you run the game in the usual way, your GameCube will be forced to load in that region mode, correcting any problems with the display mode.

I was about to post that. It's my favorite. :)

But it has to be more like this:
Life sucks. And then you die.

Or

Life sucks. And then you die!

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
