Anyone own a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner? Do they really work?

^Topic.

I have a big dog who leaves a lot of hair wherever he goes. I should vacuum twice a week, but I'm lucky if I get around to it every two weeks. How much intervention is necessary with a Roomba? I see they have a model that will find its charger base when the battery is low, and will recharge itself. Can I just set the Roomba up to clean every so often, and then forget about it? Can it go from carpet to tile and back to carpet again without adjustment?

There are a lot of positive reviews at Amazon and Epinions, leavened by comments from people who say it just doesn't clean that well or it's more hassle than it's worth. Anyone have a positive Roomba experience? Which model do you own?

I've got a discovery, works just fine. You have to start them manually, so its not like you can just set it up and forget about it. Like a regular vaccum you have to clean the bins, change the filter and clean the brushes every few weeks to maintain performance (most people don't clean stuff like that correctly).

It doesn't have as much suction or 'deep' cleaning as a regular vaccum, but you can offset it by using it often enough that the floor doesn't get that dirty to begin with. It has a remote if bending down to press a button is that much of a pain.

If you've got rugs and floormats lying around, the Roomba usually gets caught up on them. Other than that it works well on tile and hard floors, but I prefer to use a regular vacuum for carpeted rooms.

it works.. and it works pretty well.. it just takes a while to clean the place.. so its best to do it while you are away at work.. i believe you can set it on a timer as well, and im pretty sure that when its done cleaning it returns to its pod in order to recharge itself.

I don't have one myself, but I know a couple who swear by their model. Three dogs, two cats, and lots of shedding. Now, they're using their model on hardwood floors, so it may be somewhat different as far as carpeting is concerned. Otherwise, they seem real pleased with it. Turn it on before you leave the house for a while, come back and it's done. It's slow, but if you aren't the one vacumming, what do you care?

Well, I just placed my order for the Roomba Red at Amazon. $150 minus $25 promotional discount on housewares items plus free shipping = $125, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I wonder if I can teach it to bring me a beer every now and then.

We have one love it... you will probably have to clean it after each run though(especially if you have pets), but it really does a great job...
