Anyone tried mystery boxes subscriptions?

I joined a beer club once, that's kinda like a mystery box. The bottom line for me was that if I didn't know I wanted it, then I probably didn't want it. I had them send me a bunch of shitty IPAs which I only drink when I'm looking for highest ABV at expensive bars. I was in for 6 months then quit.

I only imagine with physical things that you can't consume, it's even more likely you'll end up with shit you don't want or that will end up in the closet in a box.

Subscribed to Loot Anime for about a year. And yeah, most of it was garbage, but there was some good shit here or there:

-a really nice scarf, though it was from a generic magic school anime that wasn’t even that well known among its genre, so baffling choice, but hey I’ll take a good scarf
-a Sailor Moon bottle opener shaped like her wand
-a letter opener shaped like Guts’ sword from Berserk
-decent figures of Luffy from One Piece and Gin from Gintama
-a mousepad featuring the characters from Kiznaiver

But I did cancel it as 80% or more of it ranged from mid to shit. It does suck to miss out on some cool shit, like damn doing a quick cool Google search one month they had cups from Mushi-shi, that anime was excellent and I’ve never seen merch of it ever. And I see one month had a plush of Vash from Trigun, hell yeah. But it’s just not worth the money. Still fun to do for a while just to see if anything surprising came in each month.

There was a time when I was younger where I thought the idea sounded cool, but I never subscribed to any. As an adult with a job, if I want a specific thing I’ll just buy it. Not going To gamble on a grab bag of things I’ll probably just throw in my closet.

No, I would not be interested in paying for a company to send me the items they could not sell.

The only ones in which I see an appeal are the food based ones as it can be fun to try different stuff and it can help you discover new types or brands that you might like.
It's not exactly the same but a couple of years ago I was gifted a "Christmas beer calendar" that basically had 24 different mystery beers from local breweries, and it was pretty nice.

The merch ones just seems like the ultimate form of consumerism, it's basically "here's money just send me shit!!!!". And you just know 90% of it will be garbage or that you'll never use/wear it.

I've been subscribed to Universal Yums and Horror Pack for a couple years. Both are worth it (for me)

The Super Yum Box is $42 a month plus free shipping and the Horror pack is $25 a month plus free shipping for 4 horror blu rays.

If you see one you like, just read some reviews and maybe try it for a month to see if it is worth it.
