Old news?

http://www.betanews.com/article/Death_Knell_Sounds_for_Nullsoft_Winamp/1100111204

The last members of the original Winamp team have said goodbye to AOL and the door has all but shut on the Nullsoft era, BetaNews has learned.

Only a few employees remain to prop up the once-ubiquitous digital audio player with minor updates, but no further improvements to Winamp are expected.

Winamp's abandonment comes as no surprise to those close to the company who say the software has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and Winamp creator Justin Frankel last January.

[...etc...]

Does Winamp really need to be updated anyway?
Up until v5, I was pretty happy with using v2 for several years. And I don't see anything wrong with v5!

Justin Frankel's website --- www.1014.org

His latest creation--- http://www.jesusonic.com/

He's into playing music alot these days. But remember, without him there's no such thing as Bittorrent. Frankel's got a great mind, he keeps it open. He's a huge liability to any company... which is why maybe he's best going solo....staying underground.

Although I'd like to see him mess with the iPod.

Its really one of those 'end of the dot com' era types of things. Corporations are spinning off or killing projects that don't contribute to the bottom line these days. The era of just making stuff because its cool on corporate funds is almost at an end.... for now. Soon the companies will realize that there is significant value in controlling platforms and standards and the cycle will begin anew.

I'm still having a hard time understanding why they sold themselves to AOL in the first place. Were they hurting that badly back then?

Not making any money and having someone throwing money at you tends to do things like that :)

AOL threw millions at them. AOL mishandled the opportunity they had in having a media player. Instead, you have people using iTunes. Think about if AOL had all of their subscribers using Winamp.

If only you knew how many opportunities AOL mishandled.... if only you knew. Its sobbering that a company with so much money could screw themselves so bad... consistently.

They don't even send out AOL Cds anymore. Truly the end of an era.

Edit: completely unrelated to winamp of course.

Winamp rocks, I'll never stop using it.

BTW is there an equalizer in Foobar? I've only seen screenies of the main interface.

Actually, in the newest EGM, an AOL CD was packaged in with it.

This is bad news and the end of an era, but as least Winamp, as it stands now is great and can be usefully used long into the future.
