GAAAAAAAAY

Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) proves once again that he's the best and most versatile songwriter around, with this new collaboration with Boom Bip. Their debut album, released last week, is a CONCEPT ALBUM ABOUT JOHN DELOREAN (yes, that John DeLorean), playboy/engineer extraordinaire.

Here's their first video, the single I Lust U, which features the lovely Cate le Bon and--like many of the songs on the album--awesome synths and badical drum breaks.

Also check out their Myspace to hear streams of all the songs on the album. I'd recommend the brilliant synth-pop of I Told Her on Alderaan and Belfast, the beautiful Cars-inspired Steel Your Girl, Raquel, and Dream Cars, and the awesome coke-stomp Michael Douglas. The hip-hop tracks on the album (Trick for Treat, Sweat Shop, Luxury Pool) aren't bad either, featuring the likes of Har Mar Superstar, Spank Rock, and Yo Majesty. I think the Strokes had something to with the album, also (at least their drummer).

Got this two days ago, haven't really listened to it, but from what I listened to, I didn't really like it...
but remember this is only first impressions, I'm gonna go listen to it now.

I love "I Lust You", haven't given the rest of the album a proper listen yet though. Shall get on that asap!

This does have a real nice 80s sound to it... Listening to some of it on their Myspace. Love the Delorean use.

I don't care for most of this (and the hip-hop portions are definite low points) but as far as individual tracks go, "Dream Cars" is one of the better pop songs I've heard this year.

Check out Steel Your Girl and Raquel next.

Oh, I've heard them a few times and they don't do a thing for me. My interest in the project is limited pretty much to one song.

LAME

Have you ever listened to Super Furry Animals or Gruff's solo stuff? He's an incredible pop songwriter, and there's plenty more of that Dream Cars goodness to be heard. I'd suggest one of SFA's latest singles, Run-away, as fairly similar, though it's definitely not representative of what I consider to be his better material.

I dragged up the "2008 has no good albums" thread the other day to mention this.

Pretty funny concept, its hard to tell at times if they're deliberately cheesing it up, I was always fond of these 80s sounds. I love the intro song, I lust you, I told her on alderaan, belfast, michael douglas and raquel.

I like what I'm hearing, but I have no idea what the comparison to Gorillaz is supposed to mean.

Had SFA's singles compilation several years ago (was spurred into buying it by someone here, if memory serves...) and while I enjoyed some of it, there was more that I thoroughly disliked. It's not a style of music -- if one can even narrow them down to a particular "style" -- that I really care to listen to these days, so it's unlikely that revisiting their material would benefit me much at this point. As with Neon Neon, occasional pop songs will catch my ear nowadays, but I'll rarely be able to stomach an entire album of the stuff.

Indie-darlings-meet-well-regarded-electro-pop-production? There's certainly no similarity in the music, but their path-crossings are reminiscent, I guess.

Everyone else (music sites, etc.) is making the comparison, so I thought I'd join in. It's really just an attention grabber, though.

What the hell does "coke-stomp" even mean.

I'm going to listen to this despite you trying to sound way too much like a Rolling Stone review.

A singles compilation is no way to listen to any band, let alone a very album-oriented group like SFA. They haven't had a bad album yet, but I'd recommend Phantom Power or Love Kraft as a taster for some of their more mature work.

You'll know when you listen to it. It's the only way I could think to describe it.

I don't really read any magazines or sites about contemporary music, so I'm just going to assume what you're referring to is enthusiastic writing about music in general.

i'm with cosmic bus. that song is so good it's hard to believe its on this album really.

all the picture discs they are putting out with this album are so good looking, it's amazing.

also why did they team up spank rock with fucking har hur superstar. jesus christ that guy has been awful since 2000.

can we talk about how good circle and seed to sun are now?

Just fucking with ya. The album is pretty awesome.

Yeah, what's the deal with the Gorillaz thing? I'd muuuch rather listen to their s/t than Neon Neon. I like NN, but they've got like three good songs.

Well, I've been listening to the MySpace tracks once or twice through each day since this thread popped up. I ordered the album, but I'm out of town on business so won't get to enjoy the full experience until Saturday, but I think I'm in love.

I actually think this is my album of the year so far. Everything is really great. I do wonder how Gruff Rhys has time for everything he's doing.

hmmmm, as much as I luv music from the decade of total pop perfection, this is pretty bad.
Nothing really new here, it just sounds like old songs rejiged.

and then I listened to Raquel....Kon Kan all the way.

This entire time I've been reading it as "Ford Perfect."
I always thought that "Formerly Wakune" guy's tag read "Formerly Wankune."

I kept on thinking to myself how awesome "Wankune" would be for a user-name. Then I realized that the dude wasn't nearly as smart or creative as I had been giving him credit for.

I'm almost done with my first listen, and for the most part I'm really enjoying it. I don't like Sweat Shop at all and I'm not too fond of Trick or Treat but the rest of the album is really fun. Thumbs up.

Karma... the clouds... the bushes... Karma... oh brother, you're doomed. You're cursed, just like the rest of us.

MAKE IT STOP

The cloud and the bush
are the same thing, just with different colors.

Sorry, didn't mean to blow your mind like that.
