Prosser says the glasses will be called "Apple Glass" and will start at $499, with prescription lenses available for an additional cost. In line with previous rumors, he says Apple Glass will rely on a paired iPhone for most of its functionality, allowing the glasses themselves to be as slim and light as possible.

According to Prosser's sources, Apple's original plans involved unveiling Apple Glass at the annual ‌iPhone‌ event in September or October, but restrictions on in-person gatherings could push the debut back to a March 2021 event. A second report from DigiTimes offers a similar timeline, indicating that "small-volume production" could begin in the first half of next year, with a launch sometime later in the year.

$499 seems surprisingly cheap for a new flagship product, I presume the charging case will be a separate $199, and applecare+ "you fucking sat on it!?!" protection for $100.

The sad part is they won't even allow a deep learning x-ray vision app on the appstore

Really cool for some, but the last thing I want are those things elbowing their way even more into my life, and literally being unable to escape them. I presume Apple will have a switch to instantly cut off everything, but the temptation, something I struggle with just on a phone, will still be there.

There needs to be a time to disconnect, and just enjoy the real world and your current surroundings, without the internet and long-distance communications constantly intruding.

• Notifications w/quick response (via Siri?)
• GPS
• Track details when Apple music switches tracks (kind of a notification)
• Augmented reality? I don't think they can do what w/the frames shown due to their size though.

Being 100% dependent on your phone seems like a limitation due to style over function. But given the reception to Google Glass I understand their hesitation to make them look like anything other than glasses. Ideally someone would have to ask "are those the apple glasses?" vs. someone knowing right away when seeing them.

Honestly the watch is a hard sell and that seems an order of magnitude more useful than these, and it's kind of a similar product. The main difference I can see if the style of notifications. With the watch, you get the benefit of not need to whip out your phone to see if you care enough about the notification to read it. With the glasses I guess you'd cherry pick notifications which are super important to pop up in your face (ex: plane boarding).

I'm REALLY curious how much prescription lenses will cost. I assume they need special work in order to be compatible. These could easily get into the thousands of dollars and thus becomes event a tougher sell imo.

You have an argument/conversation with someone about a specific topic. A mic picks up on it and process’s the data through a neural network. It finds solutions or answers to questions which come up during the conversations and displays it in real time onto the screen.

I know these kind of A.I. applications aren’t that good yet but it could be a pretty powerful combination in the future.

Augmented reality is the future and I think it will become ubiquitous (at least in the first world) once the tech shrinks down considerably, ideally to something like a contact lens. So many potential applications. For some it will be a nightmare though. Imagine the effects on anxiety and depression :/

Its not projected or addon screen. These will have the screen on the glass itself. Plus the renders what have been shown make these look like normal glasses and not some futuristic and cumbersome 80's retro glasses.

On the bright side, covering up huge swathes of your face just became incredibly socially viable, and will remain that way for a long time.

That’s kind of more my worry. Not millions of people surveilling themselves, but everyone, with a device that looks like a common necessity. Combine that with everyone carrying around potential hot mics, and you have a surveillance state’s dream.

Something like the London camera system, and the unease it gave people, pales in comparison.

As for uses: GPS, landmark information, additional notes for anything, assisted security in driving, conference calls, watching stuff, reading stuff, games, apps, funny apps, fighting power apps... even porn.

I mean, if it can overlay virtual 3D images in a real 3D environment, it can be used for anything. It's basically holograms.

I first played with the tech that eventually became Hololens in 2005. It was rudimentary, but already then it was enough to see that AR would one day change the world.

Back then contextual data or social media didn’t really exist, so the use cases I imagined where working on a confidential presentation in the airplane, or laying on your back watching a film on the ceiling.

One of the most complex issues was the question of how would we control the interface. Phone seemed like a distraction and not intuitive, because you would have another screen to attend to. But Apple Watch, that may work.

True lidar embedded in glass frames doesn't sound realistic. But since Apple bought Primesense (providers of the first kinect sensor), it's likely that they're using their tech in that device, just like they did in their iPhones since X.
I can see how not having an RGB camera would reduce some privacy issues, although it would also remove some of cool uses of AR (like automatic translation of content, QR code reading, ...)

As far as I'm concerned I'm waiting for the Kingsman holo-conferences.

As much as I absolutely hate Apple and all their products, I'm actually kind of excited by this. Not because I want it, I'd never buy an Apple product, but because I fully appreciate their influence in the tech industry and in the general public.
This kind of needs to happen to give AR tech a boost. Bring on the competitor products.

In theory, we all currently carry around all the knowledge in the world in our palms now. All that's really left is bringing that knowledge closer and closer to the brain. Now you'll leave it in your pocket and not use your hands or the screen. Then you'll have a chip. Then you'll have a neural link and control it with your brain. Then you'll theoretically know everything.

But yeah, this looks a long way from that. Eventually your google search will just be with your brain, and you'll see or think the answer.

Not only would it look amazing, but the functionality could provide the safety of keeping your eyes where they're supposed to be while also knowing exactly where your next turn is.

Or other common examples like you're at the store, and your shopping list is projecting almost like your own personal secret hologram in front of you and as you grab the items, they disappear from the list.

I feel like a line projected on the road is way less of a hazard than constantly looking down at a GPS screen.

Hopefully it's all moot in the end and we finally get fully self-driving cars. Humans can't be trusted to drive properly in the first place.
