I know I surely wouldn't want to track anything that wasn't immediately purchasable in the iTunes store.
The fact it will only track stuff people have bought (ie. a miniscule proportion of their library for many people) it's pretty much useless. I've bought about 20 tracks total, which don't represent my general listening habits in the slightest, so linking them to my profile is stupid.

Some kind of last.fm style 'charts' per user, even if it only had 'buy' links next to the songs you COULD buy on the itunes store, would be better than what's currently on offer. At the moment it's hilariously bad, and I can't even see the point of it.

The only thing visually that's mildly annoying is the monochrome source panel. I'm not entirely sure why they went that route given how colorful the rest of the OS is; a preference option would've been nice.

But you know, I'll live.

Ya that would be a lot better. My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek ;)

The thing I'm really wishing for right now is the ability to use the "show all artwork" option but then have it not show blank art for tracks I don't have art for. The new list visual style is useless for me without that option turned on, because I want art showing for any tracks I have art for, but then I would like to use the compressed listing for when I don't have art.

I, for one, don't have a problem with the new icon and am slightly convinced that most of the backlash stems from the natural resistance to change.

The disc is very dated.

I'm more pissed that they realized the icon needed an overhaul to reflect its function but they couldn't extend the same reasoning to the purpose of the app itself. iTunes is a bloated mess and reflects badly on Apple. I admit to taking out my frustrations on the icon designer.

it just...it has no significance. the disc made sense, as CDs were the principle vehicle of music distribution. the logo thus had meaning.

this logo has no meaning. it's a gradient blue sphere with a music note. speaks in no way to the cloud, digital distribution, digital anything. it's generic.

The old icon was shitty also, i use this one.

And they still havent got multitouch 2 finger swipe to seek and pinch to fullscreen like quicktime smh.

OMG, I just noticed the live updating iPod capacity bar when syncing. It’s awesome.

as you start adding or removing media or apps from the iPhone, the bar fills up to show you how much space you will have left when hit apply and start the sync. no more estimating the space in your head before starting the sync before finding out you’re gonna go over.

as for the icon. meh. It’s a music note for iTunes. whatever. it’s not exactly inspired but I’ve seen worse. (I do expect better from Apple, though. they should set high standards

Interesting...

On my Mac, the iTunes helper process is now 64 bit (I'm nearly positive it was 32 bit before). So I think apple has been rewriting parts of iTunes in cocoa, at least.

It's been 64 bit like that since (at least) iTunes 9 last year. IIRC, all iTunes helper does is launch iTunes when you plug in an iPod.

Probably will never get rewritten at this point sadly. Seems like Apple has all their software engineer dudes working on iOS stuff rather than Mac software.

Damn. Ok thanks for clarifying

Not a fan of the vertical buttons or the monochromatic style at all. Pretty lacklustre update overall. Back to Foobar, I guess.

wow. epic fail. I buy almost everything from Amazon because their sales are better and their bitrates are higher (320kbps).

Amazon offers 320kbps now? Their FAQ still says 256kbps VBR, so I always went for iTunes because of the higher quality.

WTF at the shitty iTunes 10 icon. I mean seriously it looks so generic. It's just so out of place with Apple's other icons. It's so unAppley. :(

i like it more than:

iphoto
garageband
preview
safari
mail

and less than:

imovie
dashboard

i think they'll probably all move in this direction soon enough.

i bought an album in june from amazon and it was 256kbps vbr if it was 320 i would buy more from them

Can't wait to see a full breakdown/review of the 32gb touch. Sounded so good this morning, and then that camera stuff came up :|

eh I was expecting a new iPad.

why would they release a new one now when its not even been out a year and they currently have no competitors? makes literally no sense to release a new one.

I think it was an awesome keynote. Apple did A LOT of things right.

iOS 4.1, new iPad features, Game Center = Win
New iTunes + Ping = Mostly Win
iPod Shuffle = Win
iPod Nano = Win
iPod Touch = Win
No true iTunes Cloud or Lala-like music service = Fail
Apple TV minus iOS/Apps = FAIL

Hell, if I didn't own an iPhone 4 already I'd be all over the new Nano.

Shuffle and the Touch were cool, but Touch was a given since its basically the iphone 4. Nano seems like a downgrade: It's the shuffle with a touchscreen and more mem. Ping is pretty useless for music tracking unless you and all your friends spend all your bucks at iTunes and dont rip cds, buy from amazon, etc. Apple TV is better this time, but still dont understand its purpose. "Renting" HD movies = paying for pay per view on your cable box, renting 2 movies is the same price as unlimited netflix for the month, no IOS apps, etc. If all I want to do is stream from my computer I guess it makes it easy if you dont have anything else that will do it. I knew it would be basic like that but I was hoping an appstore would have allowed people to expand the functionality.

I'm a little underwhelmed. But I guess I should be glad cuz I dont need to be wasting dough on more apple stuff :p

No new iPad isn't surprising, but I was a bit surprised by no iOS4 for iPad considering it's "fall".

They said ios4.2 will be on ipads in November.

As for a new model - rev2 will probably be out next April.

Oh, come on; this is just absolutely inane. The cloud and digital distribution are effectively the same thing in this instance and I'm not entirely sure what you'd like here: a musical note formed out of 1s and 0s to demonstrate the current distribution model of music? An audio wave going into a human ear?

Look, I have no idea if you even use a Mac, but the new logo is wholly consistent with Apple's other icons (or any other company's really). No one uses stamps to send e-mail, but most people understand what the Mail icon means. Browsing the Internet doesn't actually involve a compass, but most people can at least fathom a guess as to why Safari's icon is what it is.

If have a Mac, nab CandyBar, change it, and be done with it. If you have a PC...well, I don't actually recall what the process is there, but just right-click a bunch and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Oh thank god, I just realized I could go back to the old school list view through the View menu. Now I officially have no problem with it. Except that Ping is stupid.

I actually kinda like the new icon.

I haven't tried Plex because I use a custom solution to sync my XBMC libraries between the three TVs I use it on since XBMC doesn't have support for central profiles. (Basically my desktop wakes up all three playback devices periodically, uses SFTP to transfer the libraries, uses sqllite to synchronize the libraries, and then SFTPs the data files back) Since Plex doesn't run on the Apple TV or the eeepc, I never bothered with it.
.

The new plex 9 offers a centralised database, and then each other machine on the network can access that and stream content from it. Pretty sweet.

Yes, you need OSX devices, but if it gave you a really neat solution you could look at buying used macs, or perhaps hackintoshing something?

I'd have loved the apple TV if the streaming from computer wasn't limited to only content in itunes, and if it had a nice remote in the app store. Its small enough that I'd tuck it away out of sight and could buy one for each TV. Its one benefit is that it will play (I assume) DRM itunes content, so digital copy and purchased content, which I don't think plex/boxee/XBMC support.

if only iTunes supported MKV/xvid it'd all be perfect

I was gonna buy the new iPod Touch 32gb but after reading some info on the camera, it only takes photos in 960x720 wtf... Is this true that it is not even a 1mp camera?
What a let down :(

I don't understand, they are only adding features to the iPod Touch. Why can't you see it as a bonus instead of a negative ?

Are people too spoilt these days ? Why can't we look at something like this and think "Fuck I really am living in the future, this thing is incredible, look I can even record videos on it!"

Instead everyone sits around and moans that it's not up to their lofty standards, when a couple of days ago it wasn't even a feature of the (already pretty amazing) product.

no, but those of us with previous gen touches, perhaps excited by whats coming, would like more than a higher res screen and a processor that probably won't be leveraged that much due to so many users with older touches. Even a 2mp camera would have sold me on it.

Its not bitching when its a fundamental feature. Fuck facetime, don't give a shit about that. But a basic camera is pretty much the only thing missing to make this a really fully featured device. Plus look at the app store, and how many apps leverage the camera - having a good camera (or even a passable one, this is lower res than a fisher price digital camera) would open up more customers for app developers too

Meh, kbps doesn't really mean much to me. It depends how well the song is converted, not the file size or bit rate.

Not saying that a good FLAC won't blow away a good MP3, but there are times where I've seen something like that in viceversa (minus the "good" part for the former).

How much longer do you people estimate before the iPad is as powerful as a Core2Duo Macbook? I mean dual core mobile processors are suppose to debut by the end of this year.

A long while.

I do wonder, though.. Why would you need a tablet to be that powerful? Outside of the realms of games, I don't see why it'd require crazy amounts of power.

Personally, I'd rather Apple improve the display on the next ipad. A pixelqi driven ipad would be a day one buy.

"Ping" is a ridiculously arrogant and annoying name.

Touch screens are the devil and I am pissed that they're taking over everything. The new Nano is shit.

- Potentially better GUI and aesthetics

- Truly portable AutoCAD software

- And yes games

I may remake the iTunes logo to be more inline with the Quicktime X logo (which I like).

If anyone wants it when I've finished, just ask. :lol

Hopefully they'll officially change the logo in time.

I`m in Japan for a 10 month exchange and just saw the new iPod Touch. It seems very interesting to me.
For my exchange program, I was told not to bring a cell phone or laptop because it will ruin the immersion if I use them too much. Most people brought their electronics anyway.
I have a DS for games and Zune HD with me for music, however, I am kinda considering the new iPod Touch. I am using my Host Families 10 year old laptop (Compaq Evo 1020v) and I don`t want to annoy then by using it too much, as the house is very small, I don`t want to take up space. Should I get something like the new iPod for my internet needs, along with some games, and just get iTunes on this laptop to set up the iPod? Or should I get something more like the Galaxy Tab?

Also, I found out that I need to take a course online as all Albertan students need to do it.

Help me, Gaf!

(I wouldv`e made a thread for this, but I don`t post on GAF a lot, so I`m still a junior. (I browse GAF almost everyday though :P))

Edit: Oh yeah, another choice is to get a laptop shipped to me.

The iTunes logo hasn't made sense since aught six, dagnabbit! (iTunes 4) When they added videos. (Or whatever version they added videos) Removing the CD doesn't do the trick since the CD could also represent DVD. It's the musical note that is the problem here. The icon would be more sensical if it were a circle with a Play symbol (Triangle facing right) since that more accurately represents "playing" your media.

Also, I didn't realize iTunes 7 was just iTunes 2 redone. And wow, been a long time since I saw iTunes 1.

I had the exact same thought right when I first saw it. I think it's the yellow glow coupled with that shade of blue. For some reason that screams Disney.... but I don't know why either.

Hmm.. the music note also says "Mickey Mouse" to me.. perhaps it's just the 2 circles.
