As I said, they backed themselves into A corner.

Once they called the second one the 3G to signify a 3G phone, they should have dropped the numbering after that instead of going 3GS.

It's going to start to sound really dumb once we get to iPhone 6 which will actually be the 8th phone.
The PS3 is on something like OS 4.XX. Is it the 4th update to the operating system? No. They have incremental number upgrades (3.2, 3.4, 3.42 etc) for smaller updates. Just like how the 4S was a small upgrade to the 4. Now we will be getting a much more pronounced upgrade, so the iPhone 5 name fits.

That said, there is no obvious evidence of the transceiver itself. There is routing away from the antenna, but its not clear it goes to anything which would mean that Apple toyed with the idea and then for whatever reason chose to not include it. That would be a huge mistake as it would leave the only truly compelling reason to be the screen or LTE, neither or which really provide business model innovations for Apple. It would be astoundingly dumb on their part.

The screen and LTE were the only real upgrades to the iPad this fall, and it's doing just fine.

Let's not forget, though, that this could very well get some sort of software upgrade that is still hardware exclusive.

I have a 4S and don't know what to do. The leaks I've seen of the shell design are ugly as hell. Gonna need to see something amazing for me to upgrade.

I'm excited. I love my iPhone 4 but it is a little sluggish and a larger screen would be nice. I like the unibody look and I'm excited to see how thin it actually is in person.

"The New iPhone" Pretty much confirmed, but still could be fake:

Guess we'll find out in a week.

Still want to know what they'll call the next iPad and iPhones at this point. The numbers made more sense.

I love how it's a race now to leak literally every single thing to do with the phone.

Even if that one's fake, I'm enjoying it now. Tim might as well come out, say "Yep, here it is" and then walk off again.

There's an image floating around showing the supposed box art of the new phone. It's fake. It has no passbook icon, does have a youtube icon, and is using the 10.8 wallpaper.

I think I'm just excited to see what mentally insane overblown hype-talk they'll attach to it being a bit taller. "Designers working round the clock have discovered that taller is truer to the vision of a glorious utopian future, and the 2 toned back design suggests racial harmony for now and evermore".

Yes, I'm looking forward to how they spin 'we just needed a bigger battery and the glass back smashed too easily'.

The first iPhone I think that's a bit fugly personally.

After so many months of seeing the finished case photographed next to a 4S and just taking "so... its a bit taller then" away from the comparison, its going to be a true test of the reality distortion field on what language they use. Top of the board bonus points to whoever parrots the rhetoric seriously word for word to "its just a bit taller, dont get the hype" responses.

Headphone jack on the bottom is dumb too, makes sense I guess for the Vita as it gets any drooping wire out of the way of the back-touch, but no such benefit for the iPhone.

god I hate build up to apple events, a board member at my work is interested in new devices and I have to get him a galaxy note 2 but then he asked about what's coming for apple, have to follow this one closely apparently :(

Come on new ipod touch

this i might actually be into for myself, my 30Gb ipod video is about to finally die I think (best device ever) but I wonder about the HDD in it these days. surprisingly the battery is still good though.

LOL, even if Apple calls it (The new) iPhone, there's one way in hell that'll be printed on the box.

Yeah, headphone at the top is really the only way to go. :(

I guess its that or you go back to scrubbing the golden rimmed toilet they shit into each time they drop a deuce. I guess reading a summed up techblog article is truly demeaning whinge-worthy stuff in comparison though!!!

Anyone know the exact diagonal screen dimensions? Wasn't the most accurate estimate/numbers (from that leaked blueprint iirc) 4.065? Or was it 4.08?

We can pretty much work it out based on the fact that the width is identical to the 4/4S and the new screen resolution, can't we? I can't be bothered to do the maths and somebody's probably done it already.

I know, resolution is 1138 instead of 960, but i'm talking physical dimensions. I don't think it was on-the-dot 4". Either 3.99 or 4.065 iirc, but I don't remember. I just want to do some math on it.

Actually, the jack on the bottom is pretty good. It's more natural to put the phone in your pocket with the bottom up. I have a HTC Inspire with the jack on the bottom. At first I thought it was stupid, then I realized the convenience.

Does the new charge port mean anyone who bought those iHome things is screwed? Would Apple really do that to their faithful?

Yeah, we can work it out from the current physical width then. :P

Yeah, jack on the bottom is easily a benefit for both putting your phone in your pocket and using it. the wire isn't in the way at all.

Guarantee we'll see a $30 sold separately 30pin adapter. Something like this;

[edit] still gets me how small this new port is going to be. If you look closely, the actual opening of the port is almost as small as the old speaker cut outs. That's pretty awesome.

And being able to plug it in without having to worry if you have it flipped to the correct side is definitely a welcomed change, too.

Do we think there'll be a new stock wallpaper? It's about time the frosted glass/perspiration thing got changed.

I'd like to point out again that the most obvious benefit of the smaller dock connecter is a larger speaker.

That's like the magnetic laptop port right?
I wish, but no.

But for all we know it could be magnetic in some fashion.

iOS6 has a new stock wallpaper, ripples in water.
It'll be hilarious if the final version of iOS 6 is still using that. In its current form, it's a pixelated/lo-res mess. The new grass wallpaper is sexier in my opinion, anyway.

Why would you put MagSafe on a device so light that the magnet holding the cable in place would have to be practically useless?

If the only difference is a bit longer and 4g, I'll have to pass. I've never wanted my phone to be bigger, but 4g would be nice.

Easier to pull out and put in?

That's what she said?

No, you want the cable to be harder to pull out than pull in. My iPhone 4 has been saved many times from me pulling my laptop up and forgetting my phone was still plugged in. Now I have a dock, but having a firm cable connection is important.

I don't use my phone data plan much, but when I do I would prefer if I had 4G.

Don't disagree. The issue is that I'm not eligible for an upgrade, so I'd have to sell my 4S and then pay the difference. The cost won't be too far off, so that's not a huge worry, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

But MagSafe is nothing to do with ease of plugging in and unplugging. It's a safety feature.
That's what it's touted as. In reality, the advantage most people are immediately aware of is how easy it is to plug in. Barely wave the connector in the general direction of the port and *snap*, it's charging.

I've always seen the safety feature as secondary to the ease of use aspect, tbh.

Either way, the current form of that mini plug (pictured) is too deep to have a practical magnetic latch. Imagine how easy it'd be getting any sort of small metal stuck in the port.

Also, I wonder if data transfer equivalent to the 30pin connector would even be possible/feasible with a really shallow port like the MagSafe.

In that case maybe wait a little. If the new iPhone is really nice then you can go the sell and buy route.
