Applying for a job in another country

I've sent out a resume to one company in Singapore even though I currently reside in nearby country (Singapore is only a 3 hr flight away). I just want to know if companies/employers even consider applicants that are currently residing in a different country? Or do they ignore them completely?

The job ad for the position I applied for doesn't indicate that I have to be currently residing in Singapore but I feel like once they see a resume from someone not currently in their own country, they won't pay any attention to it.

Anybody else on GAF having tried something like this? Applying for a job in one country while you're in another?

Yes, but not much experience. Depending on the country, it is a total pain in the ass. You're almost better flying somewhere, finding a job while you're there, and seeing if the company will help you out.

From what I understand, Singapore companies that employ new foreigners will grant/help they employees employment passes/visas.

Give it a go then, my dad works all over the place in the mines. Is currently working in a place in Mali in Africa, he was home when the coup took place so he still has to wait to see what's happening with the government over there.

Other than that he really likes it.

Sure, it's not a problem. It greatly depends on the country, in many of them a company needs first to place an ad in local newspapers i.e. search for a talent locally.

Find a job first, if they want to hire you, they are willing to help you with Visa. Most of the time all it takes is a letter from the company specifying your employment terms which you will attach with other documents to get a working visa.

From my experience the process has been painless. Sure, there are more forms for you to fill when you move someplace, you need to register with Immigration, etc., but most of the time it's easy to overcome.

I see no reason why they would be ignoring your resume. They are looking for a person to fill a job position, if they cannot find him/her in Singapore, they will look elsewhere. The worst that can happen - they will not cover the cost of you moving there and setting up your own place.

Yeah, UK to US. It all but guarantees a phone interview which actually gives you an advantage as you can have notes, and be dressed however you want. It all depends on the immigration regulations in the country you are moving to though, if it will take a long time or significant amounts of money to get you through the system then that will obviously weigh against you. Hopefully you have a decent history of sticking with companies for a couple of years, this is one instance when job hopping will really hurt you.
