Arcade Archives 2

Its fairly crazy this is the first(!) time we'll get an arcade perfect port of RR. Its the first time the first game gets a re-release since 1995 (and 1999 hi spec demo) if i'm not mistaken.

So with Hamster announcing Arcade Archives 2 and a port of Ridge Racer System 22 version, I think we can assume the floodgates are finally opened and we can expect tons of 3D arcade games from the 90's and this game is just the start. Hamster pretty much released the entire Neogeo collection, and a few hundred arcade classics on top of that.

What would be on your wishlist? I would like to see ports of Ace Driver, Air Combat 22, Cyber Sled and Rave Racer too. And perhaps Sega joins the fray with their Model 2 games, like Desert Tank or Last Bronx.

Oh shit I missed this. So Hamster are starting the AA2 series of games with the Switch 2?

I just want them to get together with Sega and release an altered version of Outun 2006 SP, swapping the Ferrari's with some car that doesn't continually hinder the release of the game due to licencing.

It's...

Wouldn't that be a M2 x Sega Ages type deal? There's lots of stuff left to resurrect.

The idea is basically to cover every single game, even the iterative stuff.

I mean yeah, RR is a classic, and Japan had always had reverence for pioneering first instalments, so it makes sense.

I just hope it doesn't make the prospect of a RR2 port redundant because apart from the extra music, rear view mirror and matchmaking, it's essentially the same game.

What I like about Hamster is that they don't touch arcade ports, like Iron Galaxy etc did by removing intros and things. On the other hand they never added extras either. But they are the true arcade experiences without bullshit. AA2 however, they did add extra modes and netplay to KOF 98 recently.

Who knows RR2 is included as an extra arcade mode, or they update it later. But I'd be happy if they moved on to Rave Racer which I played in an arcade not too long ago and might be the best of the bunch.

Well, Konami's Arcade Archives Anniversary Collection, which Hamster worked on, didn't keep them from releasing ports of the separate games to the AA series.

The thing with Ridge Racer, Air Combat 22 (arcade ver.), etc is that the PSX version were good/close enough and at the same time Rage Racer, R4, Ace Combat 2/3 were miles ahead the arcade games so no one really cared for an arcade perfect version of the first games.

The same cannot be said for Model 2 games on Saturn e.g.

I'm assuming these will come to PS5 too?

I'd love to see the following…

- Prop Cycle (strap joycons to ankles)
- Rapid River (joycon motion support)
- Tekken 1/2/3 (with online play)
- Soul Edge
- Soul Calibur
- Rave Racer
- Air Combat/22
- Cyber Sled
- Motocross Go
- Time Crisi/2
- Crisis Zone

This was a really exciting era of arcades so it's awesome that will see this and presumably other Namco System 22 eventually making their way to AA.

I have mixed feelings about the overall Arcade Archives series. They've been releasing one title a week for years now, emulation quality is good, and they cover basically everything instead of focusing on just the hits. On the other hand, the presentation and feature set are barebones with some games never receiving any discount ever.

M2 to me are the masters of porting of retro games. The Sega Ages line was incredible and it's disappointing that Sega discontinued it.

A new arcade game almost weekly for some eight years. That's pretty incredible, so I can't complain. It'd be nice to have art and marquee stuff, but the options we have are more than good enough.

I am hoping that Switch 2's power will enable them to ditch the lag from Switch 1 games though. They're distinctly behind when it comes to the PS4 versions, if only by a frame or two, but it's noticable, especially on shmups.

They already confirmed vrr in handheld mode

Ridge Racer now confirmed for original Arcade Archives on Switch and PS4.

"Arcade Archives RIDGE RACER" for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 will be priced at $14.99 [USD].
"Arcade Archives 2 RIDGE RACER" for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S will be priced at $16.99 [USD].

Users who purchase "Arcade Archives RIDGE RACER" for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, will be eligible for an ownership discount, allowing them to purchase "Arcade Archives 2 RIDGE RACER" for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 for $2.99 [USD].

$17 is steep. I'd be there day 1 at $10.

What is the deal with the difference in price for newer generations? I feel like that makes no sense, because I doubt you're gonna see some amazing differences in quality. We're not talking about newer games here. The greed of the industry is getting a little out of control.

I also just realized they're referring to the PS4 and Switch versions as Arcade Archives 1...I thought maybe the 2 would indicate newer generations of arcade hardware being done...not the generation of console it was on.

There's some additional features in the AA2 release:
  • Time Attack Mode
  • Multiple Save Slots
  • Rewind
  • Quick Start
  • VRR Support

I...guess those are features. The $15 is already a bit a price jump from the usual $8 that AA games have had still. Ridge Racer is fine, and I see why it'd cost more, but the generational split in cost still seems stupid to me. All those other features should've been added to new games across the board. I understand why VRR wouldn't be on older machines, but it shouldn't be something we pay extra for.

I would love a bunch of the SEGA racers to get this treatment. I would say a perfect version of Crazy Taxi with the music, but playing it on FlyCast is as close as I'm going to get.

More expensive than I expected. And also that price difference for... reasons.

But day one regardless. Its pretty much the only way to play this game, and the first time an arcade perfect port of RR1 gets officially released.

I'm glad that Ridge Racer is coming to more platforms. I can play it on day one even if I don't get Switch 2.

Ok its out and I beat all the races. Its great, plays like a dream and sounds awesome. Its an arcade perfect port.

But the negatives. You can't select any other car. There is no chase cam. There is no devil car?

The yellow solvalou is an ass. He's your only opponent. The rest of the grid is harmless filler. You can do time trials for leaderboards, also all the 4 races in a gauntlet.

There are quite a bit of options. Both JP and ENG standard and DX versions with H clutch are in there. Price is quite steep, as its quite watered down compared to PSX. But it plays very well. Hope Rave Racer will find its way soon enough.

Yeah i saw a vid of this on Youtube with it saying Series X, and i was like wtf?.

Looked into it and its just a console release, pretty much all consoles but no PC release.
Genuinely gutted as i cant explain the amount of hours i put into the orig PS1 game.

Sucks its not coming to PC. If this was like a collection with Rave Racer, and some other Namco arcade classics, i would almost consider buying a console for them. I'm not eevn joking.

The PS1 version might be better to be honest. Esp. when emulated. It has more content like extra T.T, devil car challenge, mirror mode, a list of extra cars, chase cam etc.

Just picked it up on the Series X, nice we finally got an arcade perfect port of the original Ridge Racer although there's a few sound issues, partially with Rare Hero being slightly out of tune. Hopefully we get Rave Racer and Ace Driver next.

I never played the original but I bought this and it seems to be a good port. It plays well.

I think the whole "if you purchase arcade archives 2 ridge racer there is no discount for the arcade archives ridge racer" is dumb as shit
First the person already paid a premium for the aa2 version, would it kill them to have the same discount for those that paid for the as version first?
Because by the end of it the people who bought aa2 first would still be paying more ($19ish) than those that bought the old gen version first ($17ish)
