Are droppers common in online games?

Just curious. I´ve been having my first online experiences with the DS and although THAS players don´t use to quit, Mario Kart is a totally different world. So I wonder if droppers are common in other games. I guess they are. I´ve been hearing complaints about snakers ruining the online experience, but droppers are the real cancer. It´s almost impossible to finish a championship with the four racers. Heck, even three racers finishing the last race is unusual!

One a side note: I´ve just realised how sweet would be online chu chu rocket on the DS, it´s perfect home for this game! Sega, bring it on!

I don't play online games anymore. I had an Xbox 360 for a few days and played Call of Duty 2. I noticed that after 1 or 2 minutes, half of the players have left. It might have been because I was playing at around 2AM though.

Yes droppers are a very common problem in all of the online games I have played. The only real solution is playing with people you know. *shrug*

At least MS did something good with the new xbox live where you have a reputation to preven tplaying with possible droppers.

Dropping is a cunting whore when you're doing Rise Of Nations or Civ IV.
Which is why when people suggest there should be an online RTS for the DS I laugh.

BTW did you rhyme that on purpose? :P

I think I only managed 1 series of races on Mario Kart since I bought it.

Absolute rubbish interface. If there are more than 2 people playing, and 1 person drops out, the race does NOT need to stop.

This is a portable game, people can not be expected to play 4 races for numerous reasons. A person could move out of range, a battery could die, or a player can only play for a short period.

No lobby. No notification when a friend adds you. No recently played players. Friend Codes are a joke.

Edit: Do not give me that 'it is free' excuse. There are a lot of free playermatching services for PCs and consoles.

Trying to derail the topic with a troll attack? I´m just asking whether droppers are common or not in online games, not how good or bad Mario Kart is .

No, just venting. I really hope that is the last we see for that interface. I was making suggestions on how it can be improved.

On a bright note, I heard AoE won't have friend codes. :)

Actually, some drops in Mario Kart DS are due simply to the flakiness of the network connections. I know that my connection through my router is pretty hit or miss. I haven't lost connection mid-race yet, but I'm sure some have.

Then, there are types like this person I raced the other day -- went by "Jordyn" -- who beat me the first two races, I came back and won the second two, and before it announced the tie, I got the "connection to player was lost." That is just plain bad sportsmanship, and an example of what I'd deem a "bad" dropper.

Yeah, it happened to me twice. However, since droppers are the players in fourth place I highly doubt conmnections have anything to do with that. I´ve just have experienced people dropping when they are 2nd or 3rd classified once or twice.

What would help the situation in Mario Kart is if the game loaded up an AI profile from the 4 racers in the match, and if one dropped out it used that to finish the cup. It wouldn't be as good as a human opponent, but it would at least keep the races full. The dropper would still get a loss though.

Was always a issue in halo2 (most popular Live title at it's time)- which was particularly bad because since the matches were setup P2P, you had to wait on a blue screen until another host was fitted. Server-run online games FTW

Did you check your record afterwards? I have 4 less loses because of people like that. :)

I don´t think this would be a good idea. First, which difficulty setting should the soul-less player have? Because droppers use to be low skilled (and mentally handicapped), so adding a low skilled computer controlled racer even when could reflect the dropped player, wouldn´t be any more fun. Adding a AI ontrolled bitch wouldn´t be good either, since the less skilled players that don´t drop aren´t guilt for the matter. Just imagine playing online and having a computer beating you to a pulp... it ain´t no fun!

So, droppers should just be exterminated in the first place or have 10 loses each time they drop. I preffer the first option, but the second is not bad either.

And people thought my suggestion of 5 loses was too much. :P

Well, they get 3 loses, so, having 5 isn´t that big of a diference >_<
They get 1 for each player for a maximum of 3. I meant 5 for each player. :D

At least with most other online games, people can leave/join mid play. But nobody can join in mid-mario-kart, so once people drop, you're stuffed.

Maybe if Mario Kart had some sort of 'infinite' championship, where there was never any ending to it and people could join in as they pleased between races, it might solve the problem of only having two people racing. BUT, obviously, this removes the point of a championship and the points will never mean anything.

It's certainly a conundrum.

You're going to come up against people that aren't very good no matter what, dropper or not.

Oddly enough, I've played many WiFi matches that started with four players and ended with just two. Having a player drop out does not end the race... I'm a bit confused as to what you mean.

Actually, your friend roster will notify you when a friend has confirmed you... I believe. I do know that friends change from "unverified" to "verified", although that might happen the first time you actually race against them. I'm not entirely sure.

It does end the race. People can drop out when you are selecting cars, or tracks. During the actual race, however, I get a disconnect notice.

For the friends list, I am not sure if you understood what I meant. It does change from unverified to verified. That is not what I had a problem with.
Say If I wanted to add you, but I have no way of telling you I added you. I do not know you in person, I can not contact you with IM. How am I supposed to let you know I added you?

It doesn´t end the race for me either.

You wouldn´t want t add someone you don´t know to your friend´s list in the first place, I guess. Well, not exactly, you can find some interesting player though the matches and want to add him, I see your point.

I don't know what's happening to you but I've seen the 3rd and 4th place person drop mid-race and they just disappear from the track while the other person and I continue racing.

...but it doesn't, unless you are down to two racers and one drops.

That, or if you have a bad WiFi connection and the signal breaks up...

(I understand and agree with your opinion on notifying a friend that you are waiting for them to approve you -- I wish it did.)

Did it ever occuor to you, that perhaps, it is YOU who are the one droping out if the race ends?

I thought it might be me. I check the connection icon and it is always 3 or 2 bars. I sit 2 feet away from my dongle when I play.

Not surprising since it's a handheld game. When i sit down on my comp to play online, I plan to play for a long time. When I boot up my DS to play online, I only plan to play to kill time until I'm needed for something.

Which is why punishing somone with 10 loses is a retarded idea. Portable games ar meant to be quick pick up 'n play games, even when online.

If you cannot alot the time for the whole race/tournament, play single player. Its really no excuse that its a handheld IMO.

Sounds like you are the one dropping. I use the dongle too and had similar problems when playing through the firewall at my parents' house over the holiday. My connections would drop but the bars were always three full. I didn't bother fixing the problem but I'd imagine some suggestions can be found on the Nintendo Wifi page
