Are 'expandable' screens on mobile the way forward?

Ouch, look at those scratches on the screen. I think this is just a gimmick, especially wouldn't buy some cheap Oppo or TCL product.

Regardless of what will happen Apple will take the winning idea, refine it for public usability and capture all of the market. While cool this is just a feature bullet point that is not followed by anything. People buy phones due to holistic approach, it's very hard to come up with a killer feature nowadays.

not gonna lie looks like magic
it's a nice concept
for tablets it would be very interesting, for work purposes.

That looks really cool. Almost seems fake at first.
I like it better than the foldable phones we've got so far.

But as someone who uses his phones for at least 4-5 years the question is still durability. How will the screen react after years of "expanding"? how will it react to dust and dirt and random stuff you might have in your pocket?, what about moisture and water?. I'm also not a fan of added motors, seems like one more thing that can easily fail over time (or after your drop the phone)

Unless the technology makes a leap forward I wouldn't be interested in a foldable / expandable phone. The screen isn't protected well enough against stratches and dirt. Plus there's the question of durability, especialy if you're the type of person who buys a new phone once every few years and expects them to last long.

looks good but i ain't using a plastic screen. i ain't touching foldable or expanding phones unless they can somehow get flexible/expanding glass! plastic screens are too easily scratched and if the phone is folding/expanding you can just slap a screen protector on it...well you maybe could but parts of the screen would still be exposed.

i'm quite happy with phones as they are right now. i have a 6.7" screen phone (iphone 12 pro max) but i'd happily use a 7" or 7.5" phone in the current form factor but Apple would need to start making better use of space on screen with UI elements.

I'm more interested in a connected device aspect for smartphones... think a next generation "Handoff / Continuity" by Apple on all Apple platforms. I see way more value in distributed computing and easy handoff solutions between different device types than having a phone that can unbend or fold / expand into a mini tablet.

Imagine placing your iPhone next to your MacBook and then have a virtual phone window pop up on macOS (where you can remotely control your iPhone)... or have the last active app as a windowed app on your Mac (with the option to resize your iPhone sized app window into the iPad sized one, if the app supports that) or play a game on your Apple TV, take your iPad with you to the toilet where the game is already preloaded with a tap of the app icon (state restored from your ATV session).
You don't need a 2-in-1 smartphone if all your devices work with the same state and have seamless continuity at your fingertips.

We're nearly there but there's so much more they could do to truly connect your experience.

No , this just looks like another expensive gimmick.
The more moving parts you have the more of a chance something breaks, people drop cell phones all the time and having a motor that expands and rolls the screen back is something that would be the first thing to go.
Fuck that, if it’s not broke.........well you guys know the rest
