Are game consoles ever shown at CES?

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
There's a good chance the missus and I are headed to CES in January... what are the chances of the X360 and/or PS3 being shown there... with the X what's the chance of it being there and having playable demos... with the PS3, what's the chance of it just being their behind glass with maybe a rolling movie clip of stuff?

They used to be shown at CES (or its predecessor), before the game companies got together and started their own show -- e3.

In the old days, pre-E3, CES was the place to get all the new info on games and consoles. But at the time, the game companies were relegated to the back lots and felt like the red-headed step-child. As the industry grew, and more and more people came to CES for the games, the need for their own convention was seen, and thus E3 was born. I attended several CES shows and the first few E3's when this transition was made.

Now days, there is some game presence there, but not a lot. Be prepared for lots of TV's and car stereos.

That's really what I'm going for, that and hopefully the cost of gas hasn't killed some of the drive vehicles demos they use to have...

I went to 2 CESes back in the early 80s . Saw the NA unveiling of the NES, which went almost completely unnoticed!

("Hey, the Donkey Kong people are putting out a weird little game machine, and it comes with a robot!")

At the first CES I went to, Jeff Minter was demoing his VLM for Nuon, and they had Tempest 3000 in the booth, too.
The Xbox unveiling a year later was juuuuuuuuuust a bit more high-profile.

That was the first CES I attended also... man, what a showing. Merlin Kart Racing = the killer app. It was also my last CES - I wandered down the strip to the AVN show and was enlightened to the the dark underbelly of the porn industry.

Wow. Very cool.

I went to one a couple years ago. Fun show. Not very fun, but fun. If you're into car sound systems and tv's it's pretty great. There is always some gaming stuff there too, so it's worthwhile. Plus you're in Vegas so....why even go to the CES is the next question :)

Man, this question takes me back to my youth. Back when the Summer CES was held every year in Chicago. I got to experience the debuts of Gameboy, Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega CD(hey, it seemed really cool at the time), and many others.

What he said. It's amazing to think that we had not one, but TWO shows a year back in CES days. That'd be crazy these days.

Some big games unveiled in CES include Donkey Kong Country (that was HUGE. many people thought it was NU64 stuff), Star Fox 2 and FX Trax (later became Stunt Race FX).

I recall someone tried to steal the StarFox2 cart...he got caught obviously.
