Are Nintendo preventing third parties from announcing Switch 2 games?

Is there an embargo preventing announcements?

Switch 2 was revealed over 2 months ago.

Yet apart from a new un-named Mario Kart title we’ve yet to see any other games announced for the platform.

Once the console was announced I was sure we’d see a bunch of third party games announced in the following weeks, but so far we’ve seen nothing.

So what’s the reason for this?

Is there an embargo in place until the Direct?

Are publishers saving everything for the Direct to get maximum exposure?

What do you think?

The second Switch 2 game to be shown off will be made by Nintendo and it will be called Super Mario Odyssey Remastered and it will be £70.

With backwards compatibility I don’t think Nintendo can rely on porting games like we got with all the Wii U ports on Switch.

However, with Nintendo having had a quiet year with Switch I think they have a ton of stuff nearly really to go on Switch 2!

Yes, I have no doubt Microsoft anyway have a bunch of titles ready to drop. Or they may drip feed as the system expands in owners, but there will be titles already done.

I thought we'd see Switch 2 included in multiplatform announcements but yeah, looks like Nintendo wants to keep everything secret until the Direct.

My Guy, Sony has released Remasters of games that are already fully playable on PS5 now (Horizon, Last of Us, Spiderman and Until Dawn) so you think Nintendo being as late as they usually are would not do that?

They're obviously waiting for a new Mario, Zelda, and F-Zero to progress a bit more. They want to come out of the gate jumping 100%!

I wish studios work that fast. But sadly it is more likely that studios are just making Switch 2 compatible games because they couldn't abandon Switch 1 so soon.

As per tradition, it is up to 1st parties to drag gamers into the next game hardware.

most probably already have a planned reveal at or close to the Switch 2 presentation.

it's all about timing. you don't want to shoot your PR load prematurely

They're waiting for the Switch 2 direct.

A lot of third party games will be announced at that direct and more afterwards.
You can already feel it coming. On April 2nd, we are going to be hit with a barrage of megaton announcements. First from Nintendo and then from 3rd party. It's going to be a day to remember.

I'm convinced the Switch 2 will have the greatest launch lineup ever.

And as is often the case, Jason Schreier is full of shit:

The real media blow-out will happen April 2nd with the actual unveiling (not just the video teaser) so any publisher involved has the convenience to wait for the presentation event.
Smaller devs unlikely to be involved with the console presentation that want a brief lift in popularity from the new console may have the convenience to jump the gun and simply stating the game will support the new platform to catch a glimpse of the hype.

The new yooka and Kaylee was already announced to it right? Maybe the remaining developer rather have the attention on the showcase than do a small announcement even when there is people looking forward to this.

Who did they think I was shilling for?
No. Devs are not developing shit for this cursed machine. Mark my words: dead on arrival.

Maybe if they discount it and add two free games, they may reach WiiU numbers. Otherwise, its dead.

I guess most companies think the financial returns will be worth following whatever NDA is in place. Leaking early and having Nintendo ban your game would be a dumb move when everyone else releases and gets the hype bonus sales from the launch window.

Also note that Switch 2 was leaked to the point that they were forced to announce it early. And Nintendo made it clear they were very angry about that.

So any talk about why there was no further announcements is silly; they were never planning to talk about anything and they didn't WANT to.

They’d likely have agreements with those third parties who’s games they would show at the Direct not to be shown before hand if that were the case.
Yeah, I think they'll announce them all during the Direct so that it will hit home how much is coming to it day one or this year. It makes me wonder how much Nintendo is releasing for it this year except for Metroid 4. And how much will be exclusive excluding Switch 1.

I think they were annoyed with the leaks but didn't announce it early. They announced it when they wanted to start promoting the hands on events.

Nah, it's a little weaker than people expect but it will get almost every big PS4/Xbox One 3rd party title.

My expectation is Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Kart 9 at launch.

Mario Odyssey 2 (or whatever) at the end of the year.

Can you blame Nintendo? You'd want the same first strike on your own platform. I'm sure a third party *could* announce something, but why the ire gained would surely be intense.

Of course - any Nintendo system is the same: Nintendo first, everything else later.
Lol

This statement is factually wrong whatever it means in the first place.

To elaborate: Nintendo gets less 3P support than the competition since 1994, hasn't changed yet

Can't see them blowing their load in six months like that with 3 huge games. I'd expect New Mario late 2026 personally.

In 2017 Nintendo released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2.

I can absolutely see Prime 4, Mario Kart 9 and a new 3D Mario releasing this year.

Nintendo would still have a lot of games for future years in the pipeline.

Different time, Nintendo where very much on the back foot after the WiiU disaster. I see no reason for them to do the same again. This thing will sell like hot cakes regardless.

Then again i'd love to be wrong.

Absolutely 💯 and it's making the launch really exciting. Who knows what 3rd parties exclusive will get announced?

But today we can still rejoice because it's Xenoblade Chronicles X release and called sick at work 🤒 sick of working ahaha

Probably a bit of both.

Nintendo probably told them it's "in their best interest" to wait until the Direct and let Nintendo officially announce your game for maximum impact.

I don't think Nintendo is directly strong arming anyone from doing so as there have been a few Indies that have actually announced their game coming to Switch 2.

As recently as 2023, Nintendo released Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and Mario Wonder in the same six month period. That seems pretty comparable, especially once you remember that past Metroid Prime games have maxed out at like 3 million copies sold. I think Prime 4 will do better, especially if it's a launch game, but Nintendo isn't going to see it as a sales replacement for Mario Kart or 3D Mario.

Nintendo is absolutely holding the companies back at this point. I actually wonder if we will get an indie Direct and a 3rd party Direct in subsequent weeks after April 2, leading up to release of Switch 2 in May. (I am assuming).

Another thought, could MS and Sony also hold events the week of April 2nd? I kind of think this is likely as well.

I know we all assume Silk Song is a launch game. It is appearing more likely this is true.

What are you all realistically expecting for Launch day?

I think i am the only one in the world that DOES NOT think 3d Mario is releasing this year. I believe it is saved for March 2026, end of the fiscal year. To drive sales during a typical slow period and right before the Mario movie sequel in April.

I think you are getting a HD2D collection of the original Super Mario games on Switch 1 and Switch 2 this holiday.
