Are there such things as Choose Your Own Adventure DVD movies?

Remember the books? They rawked.

I was looking at some DVD creation programs that allow you to use your camcorder footage, and peice it together with swipes and effects, and noted that it also allowed you to create your own front end menu. Then I thought...well why hasn't someone made a choose your own adventure movie?

But as with all of my ideas (including bizarre ones like a chainsaw sword)...it's been done before. To confirm this, I'm asking you, the always knowledgable folks at GAF.

The software was cheap, like $100 Cdn, I'm thinking of acting out a CYOA book and acting it out, and just sending this DVD to my friends for a laugh.

I dunno...I think it sounds like fun to watch...maybe they've made them already but most people didn't care for them...if there are any, let me know I wanna pick some up.

i remember back before dvds and before ps1 there were informational programs on a very expensive dvd like player where movies were produced so that you could make choices and then it would stem to different stories depending on what you picked. forget the name of the box tho

Here's a buyer review

I have been a fan of choose your own adventures since the earliest novels I read as a kid. I still own those books, and I will cherish them always. Though this DVD isn't as memorable as those novels, it is a great way to spend a few hours.

This DVD makes use of your remote to allow you to choose from a number of different story paths. Though the package states there are 900+ combinations, it would be better said that it is about 4 hours worth of viewing. In my eyes, this is a huge amount of time for such a simple, yet interesting story.

Like any first attempt, Scourge could have used more options and a more detailed plot. However, I think the best addition would be to not stop the action while making choices, but to have the characters continue debating or the fights continue while you decide what to do. The pauses are annoying because they detract from the pacing of the movie, but these stops can be overlooked in light of the uniqueness of this DVD.

All in all, Scourge of Worlds is a great first attempt at creating a movie that the viewer can control, but it is a movie that will be watched once then gather dust on a shelf. Due to this, I would highly suggest renting it if possible.

Whoa, thanks Dram! That sounds pretty cool!

I bet there is a way to avoid the pausing...as menus usually have something looped with the options still available.
