Are you expecting the first batch of Switch 2 games to be cross gen still?

Will the first batch of 1st party games be cross gen?

Nintendo is releasing a Wii port with worse performance for $60 tomorrow, them leaving money on the table is not a reasonable option.

I don't think. I think there will be Switch 1 games that run better on Switch 2, and maybe even get little benefits like a boost in res, but I think there will be any batch of games specifically marketed as "for Switch 1 and Switch 2", like the early GBC games that worked on both GB/GBC.

I think instead they're just going to go all-in on marketing the fact that the Switch 2 plays all of the Switch 1 games.

For example, I think Metroid Prime 4 might have some better performance/res/something on Switch 2, but I don't think it'll be marketed as a Switch 2 game.

Certain games are nailed on exclusive: Mario Kart 9 and the next 3D Mario. Only smaller stuff will be cross gen in my view.

In the current day that would be like the Smart Delivery Xbox games. I don't see them doing that, tbh.

Do we know that?

The next Zelda, Smash and Mario are going to be Switch 2 only.

Metroid Prime 4, XCX and (maybe) MK9 will be crossgen. No, they don't want to miss out on their massive Switch userbase but they can't successfully grow the Switch 2 userbase if they don't make games tailor designed for its hardware strengths and features, giving people a reason to upgrade.

If anything Nintendo games have less reason to require new hardware than even AAA cross gen games....and we get years of those now.

Going to be hard to believe "sorry this Mario Kart game can't also run on Switch OG"...

From Nintendo I expect already announced titles that are set to be released on Switch to be cross-gen, mainly Pokemon Legends Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (and the Prime 2/3 remasters, which I assume will happen). I could also see Wind Waker HD/Twilight Princess HD get revealed and released for both.

But I expect and hope the new games will be Switch 2 only.

Depends how much they intend to make on hardware profits. I'm conflicted but I think they will try to push hardware sales with some exclusivity.

Crossgen with maybe one or two exceptions. Most of the big initial games are likely to be things we know about that were announced for Switch (Legends Z-A comes to mind) but if they have a flagship Mario that'll be exclusive.

Hard to say but I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't.
I could see the Switch still getting supported with some lower tier cross gen games, as well as stuff they already promised for the OG Switch like Prime 4.
But I could see the big tentpole games like Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Animal Crossing, 3D Zelda, Pokemon, etc being exclusive.
They'll want people to upgrade, and Nintendo consoles are usually way more exclusive driven than other systems.

On the other hand though, not releasing something like Mario Kart 9 on Switch 1 is literally giving up several dozen million game sales. So it wouldn't be shocking if they do go with a cross gen model.

I don't think they want to bother much with managing two versions of games. It will be very limited, maybe a couple games with specific patches.

But otherwise, their business model is to sell hardware. It is still key for them, as they will make a profit on each console sold, and will most likely secure high availability. They will want to drive sales.

Switch 2 backwards compatible*

*Switch 2 enchants/features require patch

I'm sure Switch carts will work natively day 1

Remember how BotW was cross-gen? And yet people swarm to buy the Switch version of the game, to the point that people were buying the game cartridge BEFORE they even own the Switch? Nintendo doesn't have to worry about people not wanting to buy the next gen game, they never did before.

My prediction is Metroid Prime 4 as launch title, being crossgen at launch, but heavily marketed on Switch 2. It worked for Nintendo last time. Also just like BotW, it was promised to run on current gen so they had to keep their promise.

I don't think so. It made sense for the other platforms, but it's clear people will buy Nintendo hardware for a few Nintendo games. They can stick with the '90s model.

They also probably have too. It'll be a similar platform to their last-gen console and a few generations behind their competitors. Genuine single platform exclusives are why people will buy it, so that'll begin from day one.

Aside from games already announced for Switch that get seperate Switch 2 versions, like Metroid Prime 4. As Nintendo does tend to have at least 1 cross-gen game at launch to honour its original last-gen announcement. I don't think we'll get AAA Nintendo games initially announced for Switch 2 that also launch on Switch 1.

No, there will be a cutoff IMHO. Cross gen games done simply to sell more copies of one individual game seems counterproductive to launching the Switch 2. Nintendo is based and still know not to chase the short cheese.

If Nintendo promised a game will also be on Switch years ago it will likely also have a Switch version(maybe MP4), but I would think that's about it.

No, Nintendo doesn't need to boost short term game sales by putting them on Switch 1, they rather sell them in the long term while they use them to build the installed base by making them exclusive to Switch 2

It makes no sense to me that Nintendo of all will put their games on the previous console, literal no sense at all, Nintendo is all about long term strategies and not to fuck it up thinking short term tactics for really important stuff.

Also, Nintendo is the least one desperate to sell copies of their games.

Nintendo doesn't have to do anything in desperation. They're leading the field. It will be YEARS before mass market appeal titles leave the original Switch behind. Don't lie to yourself.
